THE Best In Africa: A Tribute to UniCross Staff's Hard Work, Sacrifices

By INYALI PETER

The University of Cross River State (UniCross) has made history by being ranked the best in Africa in teaching skills index by the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) 2024 ranking. This remarkable achievement is the outcome of the commitment, dedication, and sacrifices of the university's staff.

Despite facing numerous challenges, including limited resources and infrastructure, the staff have consistently demonstrated passion and devotion to their work. Their tireless efforts have resulted in the production of innovative graduates who are making a significant impact in the country and beyond.

In recognition of their sacrifices, the alumni association during the last Christmas donated 50 bags of rice to staff who are former students of the University as a small token of appreciation for their hard work and dedication. We recognize that motivation is key, and we will continue to offer support in any way possible.

We also extend our congratulations to the management, Ministry of Education, and state Governor, Sen. Bassey Otu, for their support and vision for the university. This ranking is a result of collective efforts, and we acknowledge the government's role in this achievement.

As we celebrate this, we call on the government to leverage this ranking to secure additional funding from local and international education funding bodies for the university. Failure to capitalise on this would render it futile. We propose the establishment of a dedicated technical team, empowered to explore and secure funding opportunities for the institution. With this ranking, numerous possibilities become accessible, and we must seize the opportunity to harness these resources and propel UniCross to even greater heights.

Similarly, we strongly advocate for enhanced working conditions and welfare for the staff. Equipping them with better resources and support will undoubtedly unlock even greater achievements. During a recent meeting with the Governor and Visitor to the University, on behalf of the alumni association, I presented several suggestions to improve staff welfare and will continue to follow up on their implementation.

As the Governor acknowledged during the meeting that our passion for the university's growth aligns with his vision, we view ourselves as partners in this endeavour and are confident that the government under Gov. Otu will duly recognize and reward the staff's immense sacrifices and contributions to the institution's success.

Once again, on behalf of the alumni association, I extend our warmest congratulations to the University on this outstanding achievement. We eagerly anticipate the transformative impact this will have on the institution, its stakeholders, and the wider society. May this milestone serve as a catalyst for even greater heights of excellence and success in our prestigious institution.
