Review: I knew about the last three accidents but I thirsted for more information on the causes and effects. This book filled in the gap of missing information. God forbid another nuke accident occurs. The cause and effect may overshadow Windscale, Chernobyl, and Fukashima combined. Let's pray this does not happen.

Review: A useful and comprehensive overview that makes clear many of the failures-in-common across the leading cases explored. Similar issues can be encountered in many other industries, but rarely with such devastating consequences; human Factors, knowledge gaps, ignorance and operational lapses, official sandbagging and obfuscation. The analysis would have been much more complete and compelling if the author had added two more chapters, one on decommissioning (which he acknowledges has never been accomplished in the nuclear age), and another on safe and economic long term disposal of nuclear wastes (for which there is still no accepted solution). These have both been known problems for over 50 years. Even if none of the accidents described in the six cases had ever occurred, or if there was never another one, an equally thorough exploration of these two issues would cast doubt on the viability of even the most optimistic case for epansion of the role of nuclear power in the future energy m

Review: I really loved the concept here. Very historical and topical in terms of telling the tales of nuclear accidents.

But...

Why so many units? For goodness sake, rem, roetgen, curries (and others). Please standardize or consistently convert to one in the next edition!

There was a strange focus on politics in lieu of science that I found distracting. These were real human tragedies, and it was more of a delineation of facts (coupled with a lot of writing on Gorbachev).

Nothing at all whatsoever about the next generation of nuclear power and whether it represents pitfall or promise.

In the end, a nice history of six events. But lacking the right focus. Still recommend if you are new to the subject.

Review: although nuclear physics is very complex the author brakes it down well for the reader. Atoms and ashes is a good source to use for the layman to begin to decide if the nuclear option is acceptable. Thanks for a good read.

Review: I am still not sure what attracted me to this title, but once I started it, I could not put it down. This book is a good review of the major nuclear accidents in history narrated in a compelling way. it could have included details about other minor accidents that were also interesting, but overall a great book.

Review: In this book, the author describes six nuclear incidents: one is a test of a hydrogen bomb with unexpected results and the other five are accidents at nuclear power plants around the world.

On the positive side, I found this book to be very hard to put down. The play by play descriptions in each case are truly white knuckle material. Also, the author does not take sides as either a pro- or anti- nuclear advocate; I believe that he presents the facts fairly. On the negative side, I found that some technical/nuclear physics details in this book are either misleading or simply wrong. As one example, on p. xii, the author states that “a rem … is equal to 0.88 roentgen”. In fact, 1 roentgen corresponds to 0.877 rads to air (see H. Cember, Introduction to Health Physics).

Overall, I found this book to be immensely engaging and informative as well as a testament to the fact that if properly managed, nuclear energy could present a possible solution to the climate change problem.
