Title: An Elegant presentation of Calculus

Review: I own many different calculus books and this one is by far my favorite. The visual presentation here is the cleanest and most elegant of all of them. I think it adds to the profundity of an amazing subject. While the book is a modern presentation of calculus in terms of notation, and doesn't get nitty gritty into theory the way some of the famous older books like Spivak and Apostol did, I think it is actually a really good introduction for serious students. It does not hold your hand. You better have your algebra and precalculus down or you will end up on Amazon writing a review about how bad it is. It is a calculus textbook, not an algebra textbook! You should be prepared to think hard, work hard and to spend a lot of time working with this subject. Any textbook that holds your hand and over-simplifies things is almost inherently diluting things. Thomas doesn't do that. It also has an amazingly wide breadth of topics it covers. It will give you a good overview of some topics in physics and engineering, etc. And it has a reasonable amount of rigor for an introductory calculus textbook. You will see a good many topics that are often held for more advanced courses. The graphics are modern and clean. The pages have a lot of white space for a modern, elegant presentation. In my perspective, it made studying calculus feel like an elevated experience. Absent were all the unnecessary and patronizing photographs of people in mundane scenes to show a ball being thrown for rate of change or whatever nonsense. There aren't tons of unpleasant colors and text boxes all over that make the book look juvenile. It feels like an adult book for mathematics that is still digestible unlike some of the super rigorous calculus textbooks. The writing is concise, precise and somewhat formal. It does require you to think. It doesn't spell things out in a conversational way like Calculus for Dummies might. It requires focus. A healthy amount of proofs are presented and the appendices have a solid amount of fundamental math. It's a good balance between rigor, accessibility, breadth and depth, for an introductory text. My only complains are that I wish they would have included the chapter on Second Order Differential Equations. Having to go online for it is lame. And also, no math textbook is perfect. It does have some things that could have been presented better, explained a little more, etc. Briggs seems to explain things with more intuition in many cases. But overall it's pretty good if you put in the effort. No book is going to be perfect unless it is going to be 3000 pages long.

My professor had the 14th edition and I noticed at least for his teachers edition, the print quality and paper quality went slightly down. This 13th edition has nice paper and decent print quality. It's a quality book. The 14th edition teachers edition that I saw was depressing to see! It had that cheaper newspaper feel that Calculus by Anton has. I'm glad I got this older edition! It's practically the same exact book with better paper. I've also noticed that so many people recommend the much older versions of Thomas. I've compared and contrasted the older version (like the Lighthouse version) with this one and all I see is basically the same book with a much nicer and more modern presentation. I don't see what the fuss is about at all. This 13th edition seems to me to be superior in most ways except perhaps having more authors makes things a little less uniform in a small handful of places.

Overall, studying Calculus I, II and III from this book has been a challenging but rewarding experience. I highly recommend it. I've even considered buying a second copy just in case it goes out of print and mine gets lost or destroyed. Enjoy!

Review: IF I didn't have a great professor I wouldn't be doing great in calculus. This book suffers from a few things. For starters they leave out a lot of their process when performing example problems, which makes some of them nearly useless. For another, they don't have enough example problems for you to get a handle on the subject. Finally they over "simplify" all of their final answers in the back, making it time-consuming to check if you are performing your calculations properly. It all comes down to the same thing; they are focused on printing fewer characters to keep their costs down and get better profits per book. This can make learning each new section much more difficult than it needs to be. So, you might need a lot of helpful tutorial vids if you have to use this book.

Review: If you actually use the book and do your homework this will be helpful. If you don't, then don't bother getting it.
As far as actually teaching concepts I mostly just used Kahn academy. Besides any book that has 13 editions with the biggest changes being rearranging the chapters each time and maybe a few different problems probably isn't worth the money.

Overall, worth it for a good grade. You should probably get the solutions manual as well. They only managed find space for the odd questions. Maybe i shouldnt be so judgemental, it's possible that the staff is all white girls.
