I was told that dreams were our heart's desires. My nightmares, however, became my obsession.

His name is Michael Crist. My boyfriend's older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch. He's handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star of his college's basketball team and now gone pro, he's more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me.

But I noticed him.

I saw him. I heard him. Th

Title: Enemies/bully teen drama
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 3, 2021
Review: I normally don't like YA stories based around high school and/or college students. I generally like bully romances even less, but I actually didn't mind this one. Was it perfect? No, but it kept me entertained. Erika, aka Rika, is almost unhealthily mesmorised by her boyfriend's older brother, Michael. She's with the boyfriend to give the relationship a go as their parents expect them to get together. Rika has an unstable mother as a result of her father passing away so she spends a great deal of time at her boyfriend's house as they're close friends of the family who mostly care for her due to her mother's mental health issues. Michael is a few years older than her and he, along with his three best friends, once ruled the school. Returning to town as a big basketball star, Michael lets Rika hang around them and they develop a strange kind of friendship as the attraction between them builds. When something happens on Devil's Night, Michael's three friends are arrested. You don't know what it is for most of the book, just that they blame Rika for it, plotting their revenge for when they are released from jail.

I liked the author's style of writing throughout the book. Told from Rika's point of view, the story alternates between the present and the past events that led to her being taken into Michael's inner circle and the group's subsequent arrest. You can kind of pick out where the story is going and it was frustrating at times to have the constant dangling of a carrot as the unknown event was constantly alluded to but never revealed. As a result, you're never quite sure if Rika knows what actually sent them to prison and her alleged role in the arrests. There are a few good twists and some steam added in for good measure that was pretty intense and hot in places. As most of the characters acted well above their age, it was easy enough to forget this was a highschool to college romance but that suited me fine rather than annoyed me.

While the four friends, aka The Four Horsemen, were solid characters for the most part, Rika bordered annoyingly stupid at times. She thrived on fear as it pressed the right buttons for her but seriously, some of her choices were questionable. She was threatened and treated terribly at times by the group and particularly Michael who was the sun to her earth but she constantly got over his behaviour. She also spent some time doing the old 'Why are you doing this? He's so mean to me but I love him and he's good looking' business so definite points off for that. And still, she kept going back for more to show how strong she was. So after they've ignored her or been nasty, she just melts straight into Michael and lets him get a bit jiggy. Yeah, nah, this makes her more of a masochist in my book. But luckily Rika also took the book's resident role of amateur psychologist that was able to diagnose everyone and tell them what's wrong. Oh, and let's not forget that once they start to gain the upper hand in controlling Rika, they make her go with them to a pool party. And the time she randomly goes to get payback on some guy who almost sexually assaulted her in the past and they guys almost let her get sexually assaulted a second time. Wot?

While the book was entertaining, there were quite a few cliches thrown around that some readers won't like. The bully trope is pretty strong. As I said above, there was a lot of Michael being nasty and Rika going back to him. He put his friends before her well-being which left me scratching my head more than one time. There was the typical high school bully trope of the bully group being good looking, powerful and filthy rich, ruling the town with no one daring to bring them to task. Rika was also wealthy so in her first year of college she goes to a completely unfamiliar town and moves into a swank apartment that she was 'accidentally' given but circumstances mean she must live there. How very convenient.

Slight spoilers below

There's also the cliche where the main male character likes the girl so much he is mean to her and ignores her for her own good. Then he's mean to her because she ruined his friends' lives. Meanwhile, post-prison they're all still living affluently. Michael pushes her out of her comfort zone frequently, knowing this is what she likes, but this resulted in me being unsure as to whether or not they even actually liked each other at times in the book. The Horsemen, led by Michael, do some pretty horrible stuff to her in order to ruin her life and make her beholden to them and while this is also a familiar trope, Rika doing the whole woe is me and putting up with it was not only annoying, but contradictory to the strong, independent person she allegedly was (or wanted to be). And for the main cause of the problems to be not as it seemed, it just seemed incredible to me that both in the past and in the present, no one made the effort to have a conversation or confront Rika about what might have happened even though it's basically consuming their lives and attention. And she just lets them slowly ruin her life which frustrated me to no end. Oh, and apparently, as a young woman, no numbers she calls have message bank and she knows absolutely no phone numbers of her closest family and friends so that when her phone has been messed with and she reaches out for help, she has no idea.

There's some good tension and steam and while Michael is obviously who Rika wants, another man is involved in one of their steamier scenes, just FYI. Overall, I actually quite liked the book and it was a good length but it was a shame that some well-worn tropes were trotted out to take the shine off the plot a bit for me. If there was a little more credibility with the story line, I would have rated it higher. Kudos to the author for having Rika love Alien vs Predator. I would read the next book in the series, though.

Title: Hot dark romance, new adult (college and a little older) with flashbacks to teenage years
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 5, 2021
Review: Three years ago, Erika “Rika”, did something bad and sent Michael’s three best friends to jail. Now they are out, and the four men want payback. Rika has left the safety of her relationship with Michael’s younger brother and their small town and transferred to a new college in the city where Michael lives. This puts her exactly where the four men want her, in their grasp.

We don’t find out what happened until well into the book. I enjoyed the way it was given to us in flashback chapters along the way. In the beginning, I was chaffing at not knowing. What can I say? I’m a wait and binge watch girl. But at the end, I can say the book was much better for not front-loading this information at the start.

Penelope Douglas is an excellent writer, keeping me up way too late because I can’t stop reading and must find out what happened. The story and pacing kept me gripped the entire way through. There was much drama and some welcome humor to relieve the tension.

The characters are complex, believable, and I liked them even when they didn’t like themselves. They are all flawed, but this is what makes them great. I loved how strong Rika is. I was thrilled that she saved herself several times, not needing a man to do it for her, or at least she did a lot of damage before help arrived.

The sex scenes were hot and very well written. Their little kinks made things more interesting. There was nothing repetitive or boring here.

I do have a couple of complaints. 1. The guys are all promiscuous. They don’t make women pay or feel shameful, so at least they aren’t manwhores. Thankfully, we don’t have to read any sex scenes with other women. 2. I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll just say a major apology is missing. Someone should have had to grovel and didn’t do so at all.

I must caution some readers. This is a dark romance. It does not contain actual rape, but rape is threatened several times by different characters. There is sexual molestation and harassment, including unwanted touching and kissing, again by different characters. Anyone with these types of triggers should stay away.

This is a sexually graphic novel. It contains many sex scenes. There is one menage scene. It felt right for the story, not gratuitous, dirty, or shameful. I actually thought it was the hottest sex scene in the book.

I give this five stars because I would read it again. I’m definitely reading the rest of the series.

Now for the grammar:
1st person past tense with chapters from both Ericka and Michael.
“Grinded” and “thrusted” are not a words. The past tense of grind is ground. It’s thrust in the present and past.
12 other errors: spelling, quotation marks, and italics problems. Two minor problems with continuity.

Favorite Quotes:

Rika speaking to her mom:
“We could re-watch Thor again. I know you like his hammer.”
“I’ll see what Noah’s up to tonight, but if I need bail money or I come home pregnant, you only have yourself to blame.”

Michael:
Rika was a lot like I was a few years ago. Confused, caged, and corruptible. The most valuable lesson anyone learns in life should be learned as early as possible. That you don’t have to live in the reality someone else had invented. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. Ever.
Redefine normal. None of us know the full measure of our power until we start pushing our boundaries and pressing our luck, and the more we do, the less we care what others think. The freedom feels too good.

Rika:
There was no one to help me. There was no one to help me but me. You’re not a victim, his words came back, and I’m not your savior. I turned around, looking back at the house and seeing the lights inside slowly come on. They were in there. And once… I was one of them. Once, I ran with them, kept up with them, and stood next to them. I wasn’t their victim, and I had their attention. I’d learned how to fight. This was on me, and while I wouldn’t make it easy for them, I wouldn’t run. I would never run. I was built for this.

Michael:
“…I respectfully request that, when you come home, you do me before your homework…”
