Review: This is a great book for 7-9 year olds. It's really informative to learn about the quirkiness of nature, but has a bit of humor too it. There's a silliness that borders "potty" humor, but without being pointlessly crude (we don't enjoy that for our kids). It's fun and has great art. Our 7yo reads it on his own quite a bit.

Review: Overall, I enjoyed reading this book, but I did wonder if some of it might be difficult for younger readers. Five- to eight-year-olds likely don't have a good grasp on sarcastic humor. One of the things that stood out to me was the sarcastic jokes throughout. I think they might make it hard for young readers to know when something is fact or humorous fiction. And I say that because I personally had trouble at times, wondering if things were intended as jokes or were actually true. One of the more mild examples of this (that didn't change the overall meaning) was calling male mosquitoes vegan (72) instead of herbivores. And there's a sarcastic joke on p. 77 that I think is inappropriate for this age range.

Another concern is when it comes to pets/animals kids might have. A goldfish is shown in a tiny bowl (which isn't good for goldfish). A guinea pig is shown lying on its back while being petted (which they don't do)--and kids who have guinea pigs as pets may be traumatized to see (even though it's only an illustration) a cooked guinea pig. In another section, children are assured that daddy longlegs live in their homes, and "creep across your face when you are asleep" (44), and the book talks about dolphins' use of pufferfish for a high (p. 47).

The illustrations are adorable, but they did cause me to want to look up photos of the animals at times. I think this is a positive thing in some ways, when a book causes someone to want to learn more.

So I have mixed feelings. I think it's maybe better for an older age range, or for parents to read through first, and see what they think. As an adult, I enjoyed it. But I'm not sure I would let a child in the targeted age range read it.

Review: I love learning little random facts about things, and this book has all kinds of trivia about the featured creatures within. The illustrations are cute, too. For younger children, I'd say it's best to read through it first. There are things that might upset them (like a spider crawling across their face). One of my children loves axolotls, so I went to that page first and was reading it to him. I quickly realized I didn't want to read everything. It mentions them dancing a little waltz to initiate mating, which is fine, but then it adds "just like your great-grandfather did". That type of joking isn't for me. Other than those types of things here and there, it's a fun and interesting book.

Review: My 6-year-old loves animal fact books and soaks up the information like a sponge. He thinks this book is hilarious, but I have to explain most of the sarcastic parts. For instance, my he thought the author changing the scientific name of the jellyfish to "Wibblious wobblious ouchii" was hilarious because he already knows a lot about jellyfish and knew what it meant. He also got a kick out of "Some say they ay be closely related to noodles." Other animals that he's not as familiar with, however, I had to explain. Like the blobfish. Do kids even know what radios are nowadays? One of the descriptions says, "A great face for radio." I also read him the scientific names that are crossed out and explain that the author is having fun by giving them funny names instead. I don't want him thinking the scientific name for a dung beetle is "Rolliae police poopiae"! But the serious info is interesting and easy for kids to understand. I find the book entertaining and a good one for us to read together.

Review: I'd say this is a pretty fun and funny book for me as an adult - very long with a ton of creatures included. I would argue that many of them aren't actually pointless and that the book is simply taking a humorous approach to introduce and discuss various features about them to the audience. Sure pigeons are pretty silly overall but they're food for something! I would think this would skew towards a slightly older audience that it says, maybe around the upper range of 8 years old and above. And heck maybe even adult more than anything. This was beyond my four year old's ability at the moment, and she definitely couldn't manage it on her own right now - and she doesn't really get the humor. Plenty of the fun facts are cool like giraffes not having vocal cords and things of that nature. It's interesting to consider the evolution of these various forms of creatures and their impact and place in the world. It does seem a bit pricey to me at around $20.

Title: A Kid Friendly Coffee Table Book

Review: I got this book for my daughter who is almost 4 years old. I knew it would be a little old for her but it looked funny so I got it anyways and I really like it. It reminds me of a kids version of a coffee table book...it's a nice, good quality book with fun artwork, it's easy to pick up and browse through at random, and it makes me giggle.

From my kids perspective - it's a fun way to learn about strange animals. Some of the animals could probably be skipped over for the little kids (my daughter is now oddly focused on leaches... I think learning about them freaked her out a little.) But overall it's been a really fun way to learn about odd creatures in the world. Typically we just pick it up and read about a few animals at a time.

From my perspective - this book is entertaining, pleasing to the eye, and informative. It's a bit sarcastic and I think adults will pick up on the humor more than most children but that makes it a fun and interesting read for everyone. Both my husband and I have learned quite a bit from reading this which I appreciate. We saw one of the animals (an Axolotl) at the zoo recently and all of us got excited. I felt proud in a very nerdy way lol.

Overall - This is a great book. I think this is best for older kids and it's equally entertaining for adults. Young kids ages 3-4 are probably not going to get it quite as much but it's still informative and fun.
