Review: The adventures were good, introduction of all the regular characters was good. I think the ending wasn't good enough a death for Halcon and Guzman. Their kind of evil deserved a much more briefly demise.

Review: I've been a fan of the Dirk Pitt novels for years, so I was excited when I heard Cussler was starting out a new series with a new hero, Kurt Austin. Having read through this over the last few days, I have mixed feelings on it.

On the plus side, it's got everything you'd expect from a Cussler novel - chase scenes, gunfights, deep sea diving, conspiracies, and some sinister bad guys. The plot is admittedly a little convoluted, involving Columbus, Mayans, and a plot to secede a large portion of the United States. Still, it's an entertaining tale.

I guess what frustrates me the most is this is supposed to be a new series, but it's a Dirk Pitt adventure with a character name change. Seriously, despite a few feeble attempts to try and give Austin and his buddy Joe Zavala a little individuality, this is classic Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino all the way. Austin fills the Dirk Pitt role, being the seafaring quick witted and physically imposing man of action. Of course he forms a romance with this book's damsel in distress archeologist protagonist. Joe Zavala becomes Austin's mechanically inclined foreign sidekick. Heck he even pulls Giordino's trick of stealing Sandecker's cigars. They have the exact same dynamic as Pitt and Giordino, with the witty banter, laughing in the face of danger and going from one perilous situation to the next in the blink of an eye. It'd be nice if Cussler and his co authors tried a new series which varied a little more then their typical fare.

Review: Classic cussler book. Twists, turns, accurate depictions. Good story with well thought out characters. Had to keep reading to the end. Could certainly feel the kemprecos influence. The last pages a little predictable. The guy doesn't really need to get the girl.

Review: This is my first Clive Cussler novel. I am a huge fan of Lincoln and Childs books, and thought I would try out another famous author in the genre. OMG was this book bad. To Cussler's credit, the writing flows well, and his grasp of the action scene is outstanding, but the story itself is terrible with cliche, uninteresting characters and the type of science facts an 8th grader would recite.

First, there is no central character. Cussler jumps between protagonists so often, its hard to care about any of them. There are 4 of them for the most part. All of them are perfect specimens of the human species. They are all the absolute best in their field of study, perfect Olympic level bodies, and multiple PhDs. One of them even has psychic powers, because why not. These four are surrounded by a cast of cliche supporting characters that run in the extreme of eccentricities.

The story conveniently moves along at a predictable pace and our characters use 1966 Batman logic to solve mysteries. The story starts with a series of murders on archeologists discovering super rare artifacts connecting pre-Columbus old-world to the new-world. Somehow our protagonists jump to the conclusion that its all connected to Christopher Columbus specifically with absolutely no connective tissue beyond all the artifacts pre-dates him. It could have just as easily been Julius Caesar, or Queen Elizabeth. Then of course, they immediately jump to a rumor that Columbus belonged to a secret society and then immediately assume this society is behind all the murders. Meanwhile, one of our protagonists, whom is part of our mystery inc. group, stumbles upon another super rare artifact linking the eras by complete happenstance. Its just insanely convenient.

Then there is the NUMA organization itself. Despite its redundant title, there is no reason why a research agency is occupying itself chasing murderers. They wouldn't have the authority to arrest anyone, even if they solved the mystery, and while there is an artifact involved, the agency is focused on using government resources to track the murderers. Why they haven't brought in the FBI is beyond ridiculous. They are clearly outside of their authorities, and even if they are funding the investigation, a law enforcement agency should be involved. A congressional oversight, or IG investigator would destroy NUMA for its obvious oversteps and misappropriations.

There is a an expectation of "suspension of belief," and I could forgive this, but our so called experts talk to each other in long soliloquys for the benefit of the reader, as if their peers are uneducated morons. Similarly, all of them have predilections are only intended to make them look more educated, while their actual scientific knowledge is the sort of stuff you'd read in an 8th grade history book.

Lastly, the flow of the story is horrible. Its a cycle of ups and downs of suspense. No doubt, Cussler is an expert at the action scene. They are exceptional, but the book seems to be composed of a series of action scenes, tied together by an interwoven and loose narrative. There is no escalation of suspense and the author jumps between protagonists so often, that what suspense is built up, is quickly lost with a low suspense narrative. Even in the middle of the action sequence, he cuts to chapters, breaking the suspense. (This is ironic considering his opening chapter is 60+ pages of one action scene without break).

I saw some other reviewers saying this is the worst novel in the series, but if this is any indication of his style, I will not be reading another Cussler novel. There are better authors to waste my time on.

At this point of writing this review, I was about 65% through the novel. Now at exactly 70%, I am putting it down in complete disgust. The last chapter i read introduced our Scooby Doo villains, as they recite from start to finish what must be the dumbest bad guy plot ever put to film or paper, while stating background plot points for the reader that the villains must already know. The book is now so dumb, I can't even bring myself to finish the last 180 pages.
