Review: I'm not certain how to describe the transformative process reading the Theopolitan Fundamentals was. Having traveled far and wide in my own ecclesiastical journey -- Roman Catholic > dispensational arminian baptist > charismatic > reformed baptist > presbyterian > amillennial > postmillennial -- I was delighted to find that reading the Theopolitan Vision seemed to cause everything to click. Aspects of the Bible that never made sense have all fit. Aspects of the biblical narrative that seemed disconnected now fit in an integrated whole. The spiritual life, which used to be very distant, otherworldly, only about "heaven after I die," has now taken root in the ground of real, every day life as well. Everything is about Jesus. There isn't one square inch that isn't already his. We ought to live like that! Rejoice! The kingdom of God is upon you!

If you're new to Christianity, this book is for you. I truly couldn't imagine a better "beginners guide" to the faith. It will whet your appetite for more. It will help smooth out aspects of the narrative that may be confusing or particularly difficult.

If you have always wondered what to do with the Old Testament as a Christian, this book is for you. If you don't really understand why we do what we do in worship on Sunday, this book is for you. If you don't believe that your daily life and work and family have much of a purpose in the kingdom of God, this book is for you. If you believe that the world is only going to hell in a hand basket until Christ returns, this book is for you.

Theopolitan Vision provides the overall, comprehensive picture: the Church is the living body of Christ, made up of real people, with real bodies, in real churches, with real families, living among the nations. The Church is Kingdom of God made manifest in history. It is salvation in its sociological form--saved people in relationship to Christ and one another, baptized in his name, confessing faith in him. We are his nation, pilgrims along the way to glory. It is through the Church, by the power of the Spirit, that God is shining light and bringing life to the cities and nations of man. Christ reigns on the throne promised to his father David and the Church is now making disciples of the nations.

Theopolitan Reading: This one may be my favorite--I thought just about every page had something that I found delightful. All the Scriptures point to Christ, as Jesus disclosed to the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24). The apostles read the old testament with regard to both the historical happenings, but also as a prefigured image of who the Christ would be and what he would do. Through the book, Leithart considers various foundational themes and figures (the symbolism of the creation and garden; Adam, Eve, etc) and shows how those images are repeated throughout the Bible, how they foreshadow Christ, and what that means for us, Christ's body who is being shaped by his word. The Bible really came alive and Leithart has an entertaining writing style.

Theopolitan Liturgy: This one may have been the most difficult due to the fact that discussions of temple sacrifice, levitical regulations, etc. tend to be largely overlooked in the modern church. Leithart has grounded worship in the creation, opened up an understanding of the priestly sacrifices, and provided a vision for all life as worship grounded in the life of the Chief Worshiper, Christ Jesus. In Christ we have died, in Christ we have risen, and by our communion with him, we become one body with him and one another. By the power of his sacrifice, we become living offerings, leading lives that are pleasing to him as our "spiritual worship" (Rom. 12:1). As the priestly nation, we intercede in the world, on behalf of the world. As priests being made into the image of the Lamb of God -- the Lamb who was slain -- the Spirit is also shaping us as martyrs -- witnesses -- to Christ, even pouring out our blood as he did if necessary. But martyrs die in order to take seats on thrones in the heavenly places.

Theopolitan Mission: This book is wonderful. In most of our churches, we have been operating with an otherworldly, it's all about going to heaven when you die, often believing that our daily work has little to do with God's plan or purposes. Theopolitan Mission shows the good necessity of work, the central importance of human creativity and development to the overall development of the world, which is grounded in the creation of humanity, and the way our daily, mundane lives are the point. Daily life is the altar of living sacrifice. Daily life is the outflowing of water from our worship into the highways and byways of life. Daily life is the mission field. Daily life is the means by which God is shaping the world to go where it is going. You matter, your work matters, it all matters--Christ Jesus is Lord.
