Review: Wow! Dixon and Yuri have gotten a card from Uncle Fonzo and it's off to see if they can find him at a small Minnesota tourist destination off the beaten path. What a pleasure it is to join the boys again, this time on their adventure to Taco Town. When they get there, it is obvious that Uncle Fonzo has made his mark everywhere: From the crumbling Great Taco to the Globe Factory with an interesting looking 'tacos', then the tomatoes at the post mistress's greenhouse--Uncle Fonzo has been disastrously busy! With typical optimism, Dixon cannot believe his Uncle Fonzo is being willfully malicious with Spellcraft. Yuri isn't so sure about Dixon's hero uncle, who seems to be some sort of swindler. The boys get to Taco Town to find a fully booked hotel but managed to find someone that was willing to put them up and set them up on the trail of problems caused by Fonzo's exploits. I love the gentle kindness Yuri shows toward Dixon's boundless buoyancy--it's so endearing! How can one NOT love these two? They manage to patch things up for the folks about town in a satisfactory manner with Dixon (especially) winning friends all along the way.

When I first saw another Series beginning, and written by Jordan Price, I was ecstatic…..But I have waited a bit to purchase because of the shortness in these stories….Don’t get me wrong…..I can read short but with Ms Jordan 500 pages seems short sometimes. So I purchased all last week and read them together!!!

We meet Dixon and Yuri and learn their back story. Dixon is sweet, unapologetic and has a family in ‘the business’ His failure to pass his test and get his quill hurt he and his family, but he never stops wanting to Scribe … .Yuri has come from Russia and his life seems to have been very harsh. He is a Seer and can draw a Seen for a Scrivner…..Can you believe I understand all this??????

Trying to get a job in a greeting card company is how Dixon met Yuri and the Adventure began. Dixon’s uncle had disappeared, and his cousin gets a postcard from Taco Town, a small burg with the Taco being the main event there. It looks like his Uncle Fonzo has been there and Dixon enlists Yuri to accompany him there. The relationship between them is growing stronger. Dixon is loving, and passionate and Yuri is the big, bad boy quiet strength….Exact opposites. But I think the first time Yuri laid eyes Dixon he would follow him anyhere. So Ms Price always sets up a storyline that as Yuri , has the reader following her anywhere.

Taco Town could be anywhere, but the plot, the magic going awry and the almost slapstick quality makes this book a winner..we did not hook up with Fonzo but what he left will remain in my memory like an I Dream Of Jeannie skit of magic hitting the fan…..

Now it on to another town known for its healing springs….We hear Fonzo might be there and there is quite a stink.On to book #3…The Stink at The Spa

Review: In the second installment of the adventures of Dixon Penn and Yuri Volikov, we find our Scrivener and his Seer on the trail of Dixon’s uncle Fonzo Penn, a master Spellcrafter who seems to have gone rogue shortly after Dixon’s failed quill test.

Without the edge of darkness that Yuri’s enslavement gave the first book in this series (which was also part of the multi-author Bad Valentine series), it reads more like a screwball comedy. Tracking uncle Fonzo to Taco Town Minnesota is full of comic asides and near-slapstick silliness. However, for all the absurdity of the setting and the townspeople, Ms. Price weaves into her clever narrative plenty of troubling questions about just what Fonzo Penn is up to.

Dixon, who is Yuri’s unlikely boyfriend and sidekick, is a ditz. He chatters endlessly, never quite waiting for the thoughtful Yuri to answer him. He is smart, but his thoughts flitter around, never seeming to settle or focus. In that he is not unlike me at that age, and thus I am very fond of him. But I also love Yuri, huge, dark, brooding and very Russian. The narrative alternates between their two points of view, and benefits from their very different characters. They make a great team, but these two young men are only just beginning to discover the strength of their partnership.

Yuri fled Russia to find freedom as a gay man and a Seer, while Dixon was the golden boy of a famous magical family until he failed his initial Quilling. Beneath the goofball action, this is the book where they begin to find their balance as a couple. Price is a subtle one; she quietly underscores the potential power of these two off-kilter men, romantically and magically.

I am feverishly awaiting the third book in the series. I am truly hooked into the world of Spellcrafters.

Review: Considering how much I loved the first book in the series, I guess it’s not a big surprise that I thought this was a hoot as well. This time, our heroes are on the hunt for Uncle Fonzo, who’s leaving a wake of very strange distraction behind him.

In addition to a fun story, and intensification of the romance, we also learn a few things more about Spellcraft itself. My favorite part of the magic in Quill Me Now was Dixon’s cleverness in defusing Spellcraft gone awry; there wasn’t quite as much of that in this book because of Reasons that I think will be explored in the next episode, but there was plenty to make me happy. I’m very eager to experience the further adventures of Dixon and Yuri!

For quite awhile, new PsyCop books have been a one-click, shut up and take my money kind of purchase. Well, now Spellcraft has become the same kind of no-brainer. HIGHLY recommended.
