Title: A profoundly enlightening book for Scala and programming in general

Review: This book teaches you how to get stuff done with Scala. It's very practical. It teaches you the basics of the language, how to perform filesystem operations, how to work with JSON, building projects, etc. Sounds unremarkable, like a standard book.

Li is the author of the libraries covered in the book. As you turn the pages, you'll see how his libraries can be combined to solve difficult problems with a tiny bit of code. If you're an experienced Scala programmer, you'll see how elegant the solutions are compared to the standard approaches.

You'll start seeing that this book is more of a magnum opus. A culmination of year of open source Scala work.

It's mind opening. You'll see how public interfaces should be exposed and how complex logic should be encapsulated. Li provides hints at underlying implementations that make you appreciate the power of the Scala programming language.

Scala has an ardent fanbase that's struggled to communicate why they love Scala so much. They stand on the rooftops to preach the power of Scala and are met with blank stares.

The difficulty communicating the power of a language to "average" language users is nothing new and is know as the Blub Paradox. Programmers can't understand the benefits of languages that are higher on the power continuum than the language they use.

This book shows you the power of the Scala programming language. It moves you up the language power continuum.

This is no small feat. The Scala community has been trying to explain why Scala is such a great language for years. Their efforts have largely failed.

The power of Scala is revealed gradually with practical examples. You'll learn how to deserialized a JSON object and think, "wow, Scala is really good for parsing strings into ASTs". Then, you'll see how to generate HTML with a Scala DSL and realize appreciate Scala's DSL capabilities. By the end of the book, you'll be able to implement a programming language in 70 lines of code. The book can be read in a piecemeal fashion. You can open the book, read Chapter 8 on JSON and then read chapter 15 on databases if those are the topics you're interested in.

The first six chapters of the book are nothing extraordinary - they're solid, but just cover the basics of the language. There's not much you can do when you're introducing the if/else syntax of a language. Experienced Scala programmers can just skip the first 6 chapters.

The magic starts happening on Chapter 7: Files and Subprocesses. You'll cover Li's open source os-lib, upickle, scalatags, and mill libraries and see a whole new way to write Scala code.

I bought the physical book and the print quality is good. The syntax highlighting makes the code easy to read. You'll love this book.

Title: Book is helpful for Professional Programmers

Review: Right from the beginning and right up to the end the book does not slacken in its clarity, conciseness, and pace. The book addresses a variety of users, from programmers with no prior exposure to Scala to professionals who use Scala in their work. All the exercises and problem sets (with solutions) are neatly linked to Github. The unique feature of the book is the coverage of a suite of utilities by the author, Li Hao Yi, who is a prolific Open Source software author and influential figure in the Scala community. Among these are uJson, uPickle, fastParse, Cask, and Ammonite. When working through the examples, one cannot be but struck by the realism and pragmatism that is a hallmark of the book. Many of the solutions are astonishingly simple and powerful. The book can make you a more effective Scala programmer and, perhaps, more importantly, show newcomers the power of Scala.

Pros:
1. Very clear explanation, examples and exercises
2. Covers enough to get you up and running whether it be writing a simple script, web app, actor systems
3. Clearly explains typesystem, implicit parameters
4. The libraries used in this book (created by the Author) are amazing. It feels like python with type safety and easy concurrency using futures, Actors
5. Can be used as a reference when building things with scala

Cons
1. Uses Author libraries so might take some getting used to, for libraries in the wild. Eg) Ujson v circe, castor v akka

Having said that, If I had the choice to built a simple app I would use the authors libraries cause they are so easy to understand and use.
Highly recommend this book.

Title: Good book, good content some of which very well written.

Review: To start off, this review covers the first 5 chapters. This book provides a very good overview of Scala and gives some views which I haven't seen commonly expressed from other Scala texts. I haven't yet completed the book and exercises so I'll make an update when I complete it.

However regarding a couple of the exercises and some of the explanations so far. Certain exercises are misleading or open ended; and then result in excess time and aggravation when I don't think it was the intent of the exercise. A little more description in particular regarding possible signature or more description regarding the expectations would lead the reader to the solution. Otherwise I've found myself solving more challenging problems.

Finally there is some very good writing. However in at least one section I found the text particularly long winded and finally lacking the clarity that the other explanations contained. I think these issues would be caught by review, and then maybe not by people terribly familiar with Scala (of which many reviewed the material) but those learning the language.

Also do not buy paperback as it is priced at $44 which is too much for the content it provides.
Also the author is just seeing it as a business and not focussed to providing good content. On his website the pdf version was sold at $58 .!!!
