Learn how to program games for the NES! You'll learn how to draw text, scroll the screen, animate sprites, create a status bar, decompress title screens, play background music and sound effects and more. While using the book, take advantage of our Web-based IDE to see your code run instantly in the browser. We'll also talk about different "mappers" which add extra ROM and additional features to cartridges. Most of the examples use the CC65 C compiler using the NESLib library. We'll also write 6502 assembly language, programming the PPU and APU directly, and carefully timing our code to produce advanced psuedo-3D raster effects. Create your own

Title: Fantastic
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2019
Review: I like all of Huggs books but they're all made better with some supplementary material online considering all of his books are limited to the scope of his webpage's IDE. This book is no exception. Some online material concerning the latest version of cc65 is required if you want to use your own IDE and compiler. Still, I gotta give this book a full five stars because there is just no other option out there and they're otherwise very thorough and easy to read and understand. I've purchased all of his books thus far and they have all been great.

Title: All you need to know to develop games for NES, either in C or 6502 assembler.
Date: Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2019
Review: I bought this on a whim, with no real interest to code for a NES, but just to see how you would.
Initially I was turned off by the usage of C, as games were developed in 6502 assembler back in the 80s. And I wondered if C compiler wouldnβt introduce too much bloat. But it doesnβt seem like its at all bad, and you can develop something cool incredibly fast! Especially with their insanely great online web based IDE! I hope theyβll add a C64 to it too at some point.
The examples are very practical useful snippets, the code is well explained; perhaps a bit too long when you know C already, but hey you can skip that. I really loved the assembler section in the book and playing around with 6502 on a NES in their great online emulator/IDE/debugger. I am actually inspired to do a little NES demo project β a game is too much hassle and too little satisfaction for me. But a nice little demo, I can do that.

Title: Thought this would cover assembly.

Review: This book is for making nes games with a single application. It wont help you understand how the real NES games are put together in the slightest. Your not even writing assembly to make a game with their IDE.

Title: Good book

Review: It is a very informative book. However, there are no page numbers, and the indices are all wrong.

Title: Great book, very informative!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2019
Review: The book is absolutely great - I'm giving it five stars based on how well written it is and the depth of content. I'd definitely buy a follow-up and will check out other books by the author.
Note: If you use Linux on your desktop, make sure you buy the print version unless you have another good device for reading this book. I bought the Kindle version before I realized that (unlike every other book I've bought on Amazon) you can't read this book with the Kindle Cloud Reader. So, I've been making my way through it on my phone... which is not the best experience. Learn from my mistake! :)

Title: Wonderful Book
Date: Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2021
Review: This book is a great resource if you want a better understanding of Shiru's NESlib. To compile the source code on my local machine (instead of using the 8bitworkshop IDE) I was able to use the version of NESlib found on the author's Github page. Definitely the book to get if you've already made the initial journey learning 6502 assembly and understand the unique architecture of the NES.

Title: Great Gift for a Younger Audience!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2021
Review: This was a gift purchased for a relative that is interested in game design.
He thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the gift.
It was well worth the cost for the content.
