Title: I picked up this book to escape politics.....
Date: Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2019
Review: The good: This is a seriously creepy book that had me sleeping with the lights on. It is unlike anything I've ever read. A great bookclub book.
The bad: If I've survived an apolocypse only to listen to more people argue about Trump---just kill me. I bought this book to escape. Instead I was lectured on abortion/death penalty/me too movement and my favorite: A vote for "him" ended in total global nuclear devastation. I was waiting for the characters to start arguing about the flag, free vs. hate speech and whether to build a wall around the hotel. Maybe those issues will be in the next book.

Title: Too many hanging threads
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2019
Review: This novel is founded on the popular dystopian premise: the ensuing social collapse after disaster. The disaster here is caused by nuclear war. The novel meanders and jumps, the many plot gaps, illogical digressions, and pointless red herrings lead nowhere. Numerous questions kept popping up as I read: how do these people still have electricity, where is the fresh food coming from, why does no one get radiation poisoning, how can they periodically get Internet connection? Perhaps the author intends this to be the first in a series, in which case some of the inconsistencies and cliff hangers will be resolved.

Title: Riveting Read With A Disjointed Ending (Donβt Worry-No Spoilers)
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2019
Review: I was riveted reading this book. I have always been drawn to βend of the worldβ stories and this one had an interesting spin on the genre (a murder mystery stuck right in the middle of the apocalypse). Couldnβt put it down, read it in 3 days. That being said, Iβm still not sure what to think of the ending, thus the 4 instead of 5 stars. Plot kept moving along, and it had an interesting point of view, told in the voice of a historian observing and living the events he chronicles. But Iβm still thinking over whether the ending worked or not. Worth reading, for sure. Just know you will close the book after the last page and think, β....and where in the heck did that ending come from?β. A book doesnβt need a happy ending to work, but it does need one that makes some kind of logical sense. Unfortunately Iβm not sure this one had that. Iβm going to let it sit a week, then re-read it and see if I feel differently. Iβve done that with a few other books that I read too fast and changed my mind about them after a more careful reading. The fact that Iβm willing to read it again, despite my misgivings about the conclusion, says a lot about it so I would recommend it.

Title: POST-APOCALYPTIC THRILLER
Date: Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2020
Review: "The Last" is about a nuclear apocalypse AND a murder mystery with an interesting cast of characters that explores human nature in the face of adversity.
Jon, an American college professor/historian, is attending a conference in Switzerland & is enjoying a complimentary breakfast at his hotel, when IT happened. Washington, DC has been bombed. NY, Berlin, London & Scotland, as well. The Internet is down & cell phones are useless. There are roughly 20 people in the hotel. Most of the time, they hide away in their rooms wondering if the bombing is still going on & whether one will hit them soon. He can't stop thinking about his wife & daughters back home in San Francisco and his parents in Mississippi. He wonders if they're alive. It's what preoccupies his mind. He feels like a hypocrite agonizing about finding a way back to his family when he was so desperate to leave them.
The water has been running cloudy & tasted off, so several of the men go up to the roof to check the water tanks. They find the tank is almost empty & there's a dead child in there; a girl about 7 or 8. She couldn't have gotten onto the roof & climbed into the tank on her own. She had to have been murdered. The person who did it could still be in the hotel. Jon makes it his business to find out who she was & what happened to her. It gives him a sense of purpose in a post-civilized world. Everyone is a potential suspect.
After 2 months, a small group of men leave the hotel. None of them want to go. They head for a huge superstore with a list of things they need. They're ambushed by people & they kill them in self-defense. They're running low on food & expeditions are getting more dangerous. The rainwater they've been drinking is radioactive. But, the world didn't end. Jon is still surviving, grieving & writing about it day by day.

Title: Stays With You For Days
Date: Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2019
Review: Ms. Jameson has written a thoughtful novel speculating on the end of the world. She painted such a realistic picture that I'm moved to become a prepper. Time and again, I was surprised by the direction she took her characters and how those characters thought and acted throughout the novel. It's very clear that Ms. Jameson was totally immersed in this world she created and lived in the heads of her characters. Readers are especially rewarded by such commitment to the writing craft.
The narrator, Anthony Starke, was brilliant in this audiobook. The accents were sharp and the emotions he conveyed were right on target. He brought this novel to life. This novel will stay with me for days because of Mr. Starke's interpretation.
