Review: Having read every Spenser book, I was hoping his awesome legacy would continue. Not to be. EeK? From Spenser? Never has he ever been boring, he is now. Never has the dialogue been tedious, it is now. Never has Hawk been a mere sidekick, he is now.
Will 're -read from my library and be glad Robert Parker is not here to know that his legacy has been violated in the worst way

Review: As a long-time dedicated and loving Spenser – Robert B. Parker fan… I am directing this review directly to people like me… people who know the whole long and winding road of “Spens” and Parker. Things we love and cherish and things we can’t stand and can’t stomach any longer… AND THE THINGS WE’LL LOVE AND CHERISH FOREVER… REGARDLESS OF WHAT MAY BE BEING DONE TO OUR OLD BUDDY AND HERO… and his acquaintances… by the current author. Whether they’re the law… or beyond the law… funny… sad… or despicable… we’ve taken them into our heart in some cases… and in other cases… prayed for their demise.

There’s good news and bad news… and even terrible news in Ace Atkins latest release “Someone To Watch Over Me”. The absolute most detestable crime against “gum-shoe-detective- literary-noir-ace-detecting”… is the refusal of the current author to get rid of Susan. The author does accomplish one mighty goal in each additional saga… he makes Susan more irritating… meaningless… annoying… and a literal embarrassment to all classy women in their eighties… that is unless you think seeing your Great Grandmother wearing super high heels… her Great Granddaughter’s skinny jeans (which don’t look good on any age… man… woman… boy… girl… or a poor abused dog!)… and setting a new record as each new day dawns regarding tasteless sexual innuendos. Of course records are also broken… for how many damn times it is referenced that she has a degree from Harvard… which is like nails scraping on a blackboard to readers… and actually a disgrace to the institution of Harvard… because the psychiatric advice she gives out is more devoid of any hard hitting substance than a comic from a piece of Bazooka bubble gum.

The most positive part of this book is the reintroduction… and enormous… enthusiastic… aggressive… foul mouthed-directness… and increased “stage-time... Of twenty-two-year-old MATTIE SULLIVAN! In my opinion a star is born! She steals the whole book. If the author was smart he’d “rub-out” Susan… or at least have her committed to a nursing home… or perhaps the greatest idea would be to have her committed to a mental institution where she can walk around in a dirty unwashed Harvard sweatshirt mumbling worthless advice to people who keep their hand in their jacket pocket screaming that their name is Napoleon.

The next problem with this book… (first let me state for the record that I am a dog lover)… is that twenty-five-per-cent of the book is about Pearl III… a new dog to replace the prior two Pearl’s that Spenser swears is a reincarnation. There is so much wasted words on the dog… that I firmly believe… that along with the large type… extremely short sentences… that the Pearl III deluge is simply to increase the number of pages to meet the contract requirements.

As far as the gist of the story itself… all you have to do is have followed the news the last year or two about Jeffrey Epstein’s disgusting child sexual molestation case… and *BOOOOM*… that’s the story. Just change Epstein’s name to Peter Steiner and change Epstein’s female enabler tag team partner’s name to Poppy Palmer and you’re all set.

As usual “Spens” has a long list of cameo appearances by former characters… including but not limited to… Quirk, Hawk, Henry Cimoli, Rita Fiore, Belson, FBI Agent (coincidentally) Epstein and Captain Glass. Spenser emits at least one or more of his favorite sounds or quips such as… ICK… ICKY… YIKES… EEK… JUMPING JEHOSHAPHAT… and my all-time personal favorite (despite it not being related to a question regarding having another beer) *WE’D BE FOOLS NOT TO! *

In closing the star of the show is Mattie Sullivan… I say dispatch Susan to the great beyond… take Pearl III for 2 or 3 walks per book… and let Mattie take over the “detecting” business… Spense can retire and have a sweaty old Harvard T-shirt around to sniff once in a while… and once or twice a book Mattie can go to Spenser for advice or help on a case and Spenser can make a cameo. Mattie can also legally change her name to Mattie Spenser Sullivan in honor of her over the hill EIGHTY-PLUS-YEAR-OLD-MENTOR… and then all the upcoming Mattie books can still be called Spenser!

Review: I am a devoted fan of Spenser and Hawk - but they don't need some 20-something, self-absorbed, arrogant side-kick (nuisance) little girl in the mix. She is annoying and ruined the story. I hope this was a one-time mistake. It would be a real shame to lose the great Spenser books.

Review: I absolutely loved everything about the book and find some of the other reviews laughable. I read a book for the plot, the characters, and the dialogue, all of which were wonderful. I LOVE Ace Atkins as much as I loved Robert B. Parker. For the person who commented on the dog, Pearl has always been a huge part of Spenser's life and is relevant to who Spenser is. Excellent book. I highly recommend it.

Title: I’ll take Spenser any way I can get him

Review: This was a really great read. It isn't like a real Robert B. Parker Spenser book, but it's good in its own right. And I love Parker's Spenser so much, I'll take him any way I can get him. The relationship with Hawk changed when this author took over the series, as did the relationship with Susan. But the choices are no more Spenser or roll with the changes, and I choose to roll with it. I love the new Pearl and her affinity for Susan's expensive shoes.

I especially enjoyed Spenser starting to feel his age and wondering how long he could keep doing what he does. I hope it's forever, but he is getting a bit long in the tooth to be able to kick the crap out of the bad guys without any ill effects. He's still got a few more years and a few more crimes in him though.

The subject matter of the crime is horrendous, so white knight Spenser has no alternative but to see it through to the end, especially when his latest protege, twenty-two year old Mattie, is the one who gets him involved in saving her friends and their sisters. The story is excellent, with enough twists, turns and red herrings to keep you guessing.

I thought there was a little bit of a cheat at the end, but it wasn't so bad that it ruined the story, and it enabled Spenser to live and fight another day. So, okay. If this review sounds like I didn't like the book, don't be fooled. I loved it. I just miss the originals.

Title: Atkins almost masters Parker’s characterizations

Review: Mattie Sullivan, now Spenser’s protege stumbles across what may be a child abuse/exploitation ring. Spenser and Hawk enter the case. The chase and ultimate resolution are well done. Many old series friends including, of course, Susan and Pearl (sort of Pearl), Rita Fiore, Henry the gym/spa owner, Qurk in kind of a cameo, and Special Agent Epstein return. Spenser’s nemesis, the dreaded Grey Man, is back. The villains are truly despicable. The heroes heroic. Atkins has come very close to capturing Parker’s writing style, especially the Spenser first person narratives and the short sentences and dialogue. Atkins has done his homework. There are the usual musical and literary allusions and references to past adventures that will be appreciated by series regulars. It’s very rare that an author can pick up a deceased author’s characters and franchise and make the whole thing work. Atkins almost succeeds. That’s why four instead of five stars. But all in all, I enjoyed the book...still an easy fast read...and will wait for the next installment.

Review: Disappointing.
A Spenser fan from the beginning, I mourned the loss of RBP in 2010, and then welcomed the arrival of Mr. Atkins. At first, I thought he did a remarkable job of capturing the Parker style. But the last couple books, despite the plethora of Boston landmarks and New England food stuffs, have featured very thin plots. Perhaps it’s time to retire our favorite detective, Spencer. I think the estate should let it go.
