Review: What a cute story. I enjoy T. Kingfisher and this is one of those books that were supposed to satisfy her middle grade or kids book publishing but just was too adult for that and so it is published under her adult moniker. I guess this also happened with A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking, which I also found delightful.

Rosa comes from a family of artists. But these are not just any artists they have magic and paint things that are useful to society. Like wards to keep pots from breaking, fire from catching, garbage from stinking. I loved imagining a city where there was all this extra art to help keep things running in order. I enjoyed how each artist in Rosa's family was so different and each had their own way of making art.

***Aunt Nadia often got a little weird when she was working on a painting, as if most of her brain was involved with art, and the bits that controlled talking were wandering around unsupervised.

Cousin Sergio, who believed that the painting was brilliant up until the moment it was finished, when he suddenly discovered that it was terrible and they had to stop him from setting the canvas on fire.***

Rosa is still young around ten and she wants to help her family any way she can and since she and her best friend Serena are in a fight right now she can. When she happens upon a mysterious box hidden away in the house is intrigued. Especially since it seems that something on the box makes you forget all about it. Well Rosa is determined that whatever is in that box could help her family and be the thing that make then the best artist family in the city again. Oh how wrong she was.

***“He made an evil monster that’s out to ruin us! Does it really matter how good his technique was?”
“Of course it matters,” said Aunt Nadia with a half-smile. “You’d hate to see the studio destroyed by a mediocre artist, wouldn’t you?”***

With the help of a crow sometimes distracted by shiny objects, her best friend/sometimes nemesis and the rest of her family Rosa will have to find a way to capture the unusual monster she accidentally let lose before it sucks all the magic out of the paintings in the city.

Totally cute story and I loved hanging out with Rosa and learning that even kids can do amazing things when they don't know they aren't supposed to.

Title: I just automatically pre-order everything T. Kingfisher publishes at this point.

Review: I know some other readers will think this is overblown praise, but...I had to keep checking the title page to be sure I was reading T. Kingfisher and not Diana Wynne Jones. This delightful little novel isn't just reminiscent of Jones' work, it's like something she could have written. But there are still little hints that this comes from the same mind that created the world of the Clocktaur Wars and the Saint of Steel series.

That aside, this is yet more evidence of Kingfisher's talent as a writer: the story is charming, the magic schema is highly original, and the descriptions paint such beautifully vivid mental pictures that I wish I had Rosa's family's ability to put them on paper. I suppose this was published under the author's pen name since it's a little higher reading grade than what she normally publishes as Ursula Vernon. But it's complex enough for adults, while still entirely appropriate for children.

Review: I was unsure about it as it seemed to be a kids story but I didn’t care. It’s a lovely story. I want more. I want a sequel, I want her to write non stop forever, about anything. Only a few authors make you want to read more and more, because the characters are friends you don’t want to say goodbye to. . Just can’t get enough.

Review: T Kingfisher has never produced anything that isn't worth reading. This feels like everything you want in a little book with magic - world building that feels real but doesn't declaim, characters with depth, interesting plot, charming moments. It reminds me of the Magicians of Caprona by Diana Wynn Jones, in the best way.

Review: The story might be for older children, but as an older person, I found this book to be well written, fast paced and endearing. Bravo!
Rose, the 10 year old heroine is believable in a magic world; the emotions are real. As old as I am, (71!) I do remember my reasoning as a child and how hard some of the growing up lessons were. Her family is terrific too, which is absent in so many books now.

Review: I enjoy T. Kingfisher’s books. This is definitely middle grade but a middle grade many adults can love. It’s a book about art, friendship and family. There are quirky parts and funny moments. The characters grow and you learn more about them as the story develops. The pacing is greeted. The setting seems like a mix of Amsterdam and maybe Venice. 5 stars

Review: This book, a YA or younger book in some ways, is nonetheless a wonderful read for this adult, at least. The imaginative magic system Kingfisher creates is so fun - magical paintings! - and the story is sweet and lively. I love everything from this author that I've read, and this is no exception.
