Review: If you're wanting to learn about the medical perspective of sleep, such as sleep studies, medical interventions for sleep issues, etc. & you're not a medical provider than this is a pretty good book for you.

There are some general interest comments about sleep but for the most part it is very medically focused. There definitely is a lot of really good information in this book that might alleviate some folks concerns regarding sleep and health, such as the fact that 8 hours of sleep is an average - some folks need less and others more, the average person looking for a general book on sleep may not be seeking such a strong medical focus. (Although since it's written by an MD it should make some folks expect the medical focus).

I was disappointed that there wasn't really a sociological/historical/cultural section or aspect to the book, as that can be very relevant for folks today. He does mention that folks tended to go to sleep when it was dark and rise when the sun came up pre-electricity. However, there is much more to the social/cultural aspects of sleep than just that.

I do like that he addresses lack of sleep and how that can make mood, depression and mental health issues worse, as well as stress and worry can impact the quality of your sleep so that a person can get caught in a cycle where the lack of sleep impacts the mood and the mood decreases the amount and quality of sleep. I think this is important for folks to know.

One historical fact that I wish he'd included is the fact that we've not always slept solid through the night and night waking can be normal for some folks. Historically we've had first and second sleep, meaning you sleep for several hours then awake for a few hours in the night (say from 1am - 3am for example) then go back to sleep for several more hours. This was understood as normal in many cultures in the past and many people would even get together and visit during that night-waking time. I've found that telling people (who are worried about their night waking) about the history of first and second sleep can help normalize their night waking for them and really reduce their stress and worry. Often they can then adjust their routines to expect it and be okay with it. It doesn't always last long-term and can be for just a few weeks or months ( some people may go back and forth between this and regular "through the night" sleeping). Often folks are more likely to have night waking, aka first and second sleep, if they've got many things on their mind. I know that sometimes my best ideas or figuring out solutions to a problem comes to me in the night or early morning right after waking, so perhaps this is a way some of us sort things out.

SUMMARY: Good book if you're a lay person looking for medical information on sleep, sleep disorders and treatments.

Review: An amazing book. Most people interested in a book like this, usually have sleep issues. I suffer from severe sleep apnea, corrected by CPAP and occasional insomnia, and morning fatigue. I have visited my fair share of sleep doctors through the years. Its a relatively new field, but knowledge is slowly growing each year. The chances your sleep doctor would have the knowledge contained in this book is between slim and none. Its the nature of the medical field. Unfortunately, sometimes with enough reading, you will have more up to date knowledge than lots of docs. Remember, practicing docs are not Research docs.

Dr. Kryger authors sleep books for med students. This book is obviously written for the layperson. The book is a very comprehensive overview on the toopic of sleep. History of sleep in nature, why we need sleep, how much we need, sleep requirements through the years, sleep disorders and how to recognizing them, body clock, traveling and sleep, dealing with time changes.

For those new to the subject, the book does a great job explaining the different sleep cycles, which from my experience is the key to feeling refresh. It's the amount of Deep Sleep u achieve that dictates how well your body regenerates. A test in a sleep lab will record how long u are in each of these cycles...the book explains and shows newcomers the different stages and how they appear on the sleep graphs generated in sleep labs.

AMA suggest that sleep apnea is the most under-diagnosed condition in USA... one report I read suggested 80% of Americans have it, to some degree. The good news is, CPAP keeps getting better. It can be detected with a simple overnight oximeter test u do at home. If you show signs of low O2 on this test, u will have a full blown sleep test in a lab. I am living proof, that even though CPAP is hard to learn to use... once u master it (and it takes some serious tweaking if you require high pressures), its a game changer. 13 years use of CPAP.

IMO, good sleep superseedes exercise, eating Organic and lifestyle. So if u pursue health and wellness, make high quality sleep ATOP your list of lifestyle traits. Consider this book a health book, as IMO, there is no other single contributor to good health, than GREAT sleep!

The book is well written, very professional, as expected from a doc and a large publisher.
