Title: Had fun while learning, what more to ask for?

Review: In February of 2018, Reddit user u/BreezyBlue had just finished a 4-year prison sentence and incredulously asked, "Wow the Warriors are really good now. Is Stephen Curry really the best player in the NBA?" According to the NBA's previous year's MVP award, the answer was a unanimous *yes. To answer our time-traveler's follow-up questions of Why? and How?* I would direct him Kirk Goldsberry's Sprawlball.

Kirk Goldsberry was mostly known to me as the guy who made awesome shot charts, but he also spent time as the VP of Analytics for the San Antonio Spurs. Sprawlball tells a familiar tale: the rules of a game are set, and "Jeopardy James" abuses the economics of the Daily Double and algorithmic traders gobble-up tiny arbitrage opportunities. The NBA has, likewise, been in the process of squeezing out every statistical advantage that the introduction of the three-point line and rules protecting shooters can offer. Goldsberry doesn't really need to spend much time making a case here, but rather spends time pulling back the curtains on what you already know to be true. As a huge NBA fan, this is one of the few NBA books that I really feel increased my knowledge not just about the league's history but basketball strategy.

Sprawlball is not a perfect book by any means. There is a lot of repetition of knowledge that could have been edited out. Some of the pivotal charts maddeningly span from dark purple (good) to white (average) to dark green (bad). And also, the chapter recounting the Warrior's 15-16 championship run was a bit meandering. But overall, holy crap I ate through this book and loved it. The next time one of your friends gets out of a long prison sentence and is confused about the state of the NBA, boy do I have a book for them.

Title: Beautiful and Redundant

Review: Sprawlball was brought to my attention by listening to the author on the LeBetard show. Goldsberry was insightful and fun enough that I purchased the book as filler for a recent vacation.

Good news, the book is interesting. If you're a fan of the NBA, you'll find some nice insights into the game. They're blatantly obvious nowadays, and we hear about them all the time in the sports media, but the author does a good job of explaining them to you. He makes sure to explain them to you over and over again. By the end of the two hundred pages, you'll be well versed on who George Mikan was and when the three point line was implemented. It's hard to go three pages without him reminding you. The repetition is ironically reminiscent of Houston's offense, of which a large portion of the book focuses on.

For those of you that like your books to include visual aids, this book is great in that area. Goldsberry's background in cartography shines through and the 'maps' here are gorgeous. The associated illustrations are well done also by Aaron Dana. Five or six of these charts could be used to summarize the entire book.

The long gone big man of the NBA is covered extensively and there is a theme that the NBA needs that player back. This doesn't necessarily feel like some sort of analytical fact or aesthetic requirement but more a reach back to a time of comfort when we all knew exactly what the NBA was, big men on the block, dominating the game. It's not hard to see how boring that game was as Houston's is now, yet it's promoted throughout.

The most interesting segment of the book, one that I wanted to be more, talked about solutions for preventing the game from going the way it is, threes, frees or layups only. This section was entirely too short, but there is a fascinating proposal around each team deciding where the three point line should be, if it's even present, for their home court. The possibilities around that are extremely intriguing and Goldsberry's argument makes a lot of sense. I found myself wanting much more around solutions compared to the description of the problem.

Sprawlball is a good book, entertaining and fairly priced. Nothing extraordinary, except for the all too short solutions section at the back. If you're a fan of the NBA, pick it up for the charts alone.

Title: Visually Stunning Yarn about the NBA's Evolution (or Devolution)?

Review: By way of background, I have watched the league change radically from the 80s. Capturing these changes through the lens of transformational players, Kirk Goldsberry details this evolution in a way that only he can.

His heatmaps and Aaron Dana's wonderful illustrations provide compelling visuals to a fascinating story: the metamorphosis of the league. As Goldsberry points out, though, this story isn't necessarily a positive one. I for one have decried the state of the league since the Warriors' 73-win season. Everyone is trying to mimic Golden State and Houston but few teams possess the personnel. Beyond that, the new NBA is often painful to watch.

This is the best book that I've read on the NBA since The Punch: One Night, Two Lives, and the Fight That Changed Basketball by John Feinstein.

Title: Awesome Illustrations, Mediocre Otherwise

Review: This book does a commendable job capturing how the NBA got to its current state. It explains a variety of rule changes and adds color through case studies of individual players and teams. It makes you yearn for more diversity in the way the game is played and fear its continued evolution. It even includes a few proposals about how to inject some variety into offensive sets via rule changes. The pictures are definitely really well done, too.

That said, the book became extremely repetitive extremely quickly. You’ll continue to hear about the arbitrariness of the three-point line’s placement, the one-dimensional players it made necessities, the skilled players it’s made obsolete, the monotony of offenses, and the NBA’s ability, and the historical precedents, to make adjustments to the game before it’s too late. Overall, the book could have been dramatically shortened without losing any of the key messages. I also would have loved to read some commentary around the positive value of post play beyond the points-per-shot argument: I’d be curious about foul rates, the other opportunities it creates and it’s potential value in controlling pace. I think it’s an overstatement to effectively say post play is generally irrational without more analysis beyond points per individual post shot.
