Has about ten pages of extras including Sienkiewikz sketches, panels, interviews and the super sweet original cover for issue #26 Legion which got lost in the mail so he had to make the one you see now. (The original is way better!)

Title: possibly my all-time favorite graphic novel

Review: I'm properly, and utterly, astounded by this book. Even more so that I am just now reading it. I am an Uncanny X-Men reader, but haven't read many of the related titles. That being said, books like this are why comic books are, and will always be, relevant as an artistic medium. Positively delightful even through the few yawn-y moments all comic book arcs are destined to possess. I will be so sad to reach the end of this adventure... Thank you, Chris and Louise and the artists and everybody who helped make these books happen.

Review: This collection is a must for anyone interested in New Mutants and X-Men in general!! Not only do you get the famous Demon Bear Saga, but you also get the origins of several priceless characters!! Sienkiewicz’s art stands out as some of the most unique and transcendent, I have ever encountered after traversing through every decade of comic art from loads of titles!!

Only down sides of this book is the exclusion of the issue where Doug discovers he is a mutant, as it is mentioned it’s revealed in X-Men (even though the epic collection before this, made a point to include a tie in X-Men issue)! Also the first story and ending story of this collection are definitely the weak points in many regards, but do expand on some characters in interesting ways too!

Everything from slight cameos and set ups to the stellar stories that make up most of this collection, really make this an unforgettable read all around!!

Review: Let's be honest, this Epic Collection features the peak storyline from the entire New Mutants comic series, The Demon Bear by Chris Claremont and Bill Sikensiowvischz. Yeah, I'm not looking up how to spell his last name. You know who I'm talking about. The stories and art hold up as well as any modern comic. 5 star collection.

Title: The New Mutants hit their high note

Review: The first New Mutants Epic Collection, Renewal, is a perfectly fine X-Book, featuring solid writing by Chris Claremont and quality, stable art by the likes of Bob McLeod, Paul Smith, and Sal Buscema. It's nothing super revolutionary but Claremont had a great style that got you to know his cast of characters in a more personal way than most super-hero comics were capable of doing.

You can catch a glimpse of that collection in the first five issues in THIS collection. They're illustrated by Sal Buscema. Sal isn't one of my favorites but he was a capable Marvel illustrator who drew in what I'd call the typical Marvel house style: nothing flashy but it gets the job done, mostly letting the story lead the way. Claremont gives us a good look at the New Mutants' natural rivals, the Hellions. It's... it's fine. Everything is just fine.

And then Bill Sienkiewicz arrives to take over art chores and this... book... sings.

It is a dramatic departure from the norm and most welcome, allowing the X-Men's companion title to find a strong voice of its own. Sienkiewicz really stretched his creative talent, delivering some amazing pages. Claremont rose to the same heights, delivering stories that complemented the new found energy brought by those beautiful images.

While this collection is called The Demon Bear Saga, that story is only three issues long and ends unsatisfyingly. The story itself is brilliant and creative but the conclusion seems forced. Possibly rushed.

From there, the Mutants enter a light horror story arc where they are introduced to Warlock, the technorganic alien who could morph his body into any imaginable shape and who consumed energy by turning biological matter into a technorganic creature like himself. That'll be important in future volumes. This is where Claremont and Sienkiewicz's collaboration really starts grooving.

Which is exactly when we take a break from that to read The New Mutants' first Annual! Featuring art by New Mutants co-creator, Bob McLeod, the team goes on a galaxy romping adventure where the stakes are nothing less than the theft of the Earth! We meet punk rock mutant, Lila Cheney, for the first time. McLeod's art is great stuff and I wish he would have been able to stick around longer after the debut (he penciled the first three issue and inked a number of Sal Buscema's issues after that) but we are firmly in Bill Sienkiewicz territory now and this story mostly just makes me want to get back to more of that.

So that's where the book goes next, getting back to typical New Mutants mayhem with guest star appearances by Cloak and Dagger for the next arc. After that one, we get to what I'd say is the best story in this collection, featuring Legion and an amazing trip through the mind of Xavier's son. This story is beautiful to look at and hits most of the story beats we're looking for.

Sadly, once you reach the top, there's only one way to go...

Sienkiewicz sticks around for the last story arc in this book, showing what is happening with the New Mutants that weren't part of the Legion adventure. This one has Lila Cheney and Dazzler in it and another gladiator contest. It's not a bad arc (a bit retread) but Sienkiewicz's art is looking a bit tired by the end. Still some amazing pages but things start getting more sparse when it comes to details and layouts are much more traditional. It's still Sienkiewicz but not up to par with what was going on in the Legion story.

And that's that. All the way up to the best and then a little slide down. All in all, this is probably the best New Mutants stories you're going to get and it's well worth a read. And then another read. It's good stuff!

Along with all of the stories we get, it's important to note that New Mutants was a companion title with the X-Men book at this time. There are some story bits that are threaded between this book and the "main" title. That explains why Rachel Summers shows up in the opening pages of issue #18 and then never again. She moves on over to X-Men. The Magneto sub-plot also moves between the titles though it mostly takes place here so you aren't missing as much. Magma and Rachel team-up to fight Selene in an issue of X-Men and Warlock's big bad daddy, Magus, makes it to earth and fights the X-Men instead of confronting his son. Those last two aren't even referenced in this volume but it shows how connected the two titles are. Heck, Xavier jumps back and forth between the two book and the injuries he's suffering from HERE are incurred over in X-Men. SO! If you're looking to enhance your reading, pick up the X-Men Epic Collection, The Gift. It mostly covers the same point in time.

This is the volume that pretty much defines how great the New Mutants can be. It shows a diverse range of genres and makes them all work. Mutant books can be about so much more than fear and hatred or even world saving and this book proves that (with just a little world saving thrown in because of course). If you want some good, experimental comics in your usually traditional titles, this is something you need in your life.

It turns out I forgot to list all the extras available with this collection. Oops! Bill Sienkiewicz painted the covers for every issue after he joined the creative team, including the first Annual that didn't feature his interior art. Those covers are shown off without all their trade dress so you can view them in full but they are shown off four to a page. This makes them pretty tiny. Fortunately, you can also see their full page versions like usual with all the cover treatments present. We also have covers for New Mutants Classic vol 2 (which was actually the cover for New Mutants #13 with a more modern take on colors), 1991's The Demon Bear Saga, and X-Men Archives #'s 1-3 (a series of comics that reprinted the Legion story-arc with a nineties coloring update).

At the back of the book, we get character designs/ sketches of the Hellions by Bob McLeod as well as of Cannonball and Magma by Bill Sienkiewicz, a house add for the New Mutants title from 1984 featuring Sienkiewicz art, Sienkiewicz frontispiece art from The Demon Bear Saga trade, full cover art from The Demon Bear Saga (Sienkiewicz again), an afterward from The Demon Bear Saga by Sienkiewicz, a reprinting for the "lost" cover for New Mutants #28 by Sienkiewicz, an interview of Sienkiewicz from The Marvel Age (Marvel's in house magazine) promoting his New Mutants run, and two pages of non-colored artwork from that same New Mutants run.

It's a beefy collection of extras. I wish the art work was shown off one to a page but it makes sense to shrink 'em down for space and since they are already shown off once already. But still!

That's everything, I think. This is still totally worth picking up. So get on that. ;)
