Review: As you all know, I’ve been incorporating poetry books into my TBR, this is one I hadn’t planned on reading in my TBR. But Shelby Leigh is just so interactive on Twitter, I just wanted to read her debut and review it for her.

I really enjoyed reading her poems. My favorite thing about her writing is that she has some longer poems with some substance in them. That isn’t something I’ve found in poetry collections lately.

When reviewing poetry collections, I really enjoy sharing with you all some of my favorite poems from the book so that you all can see exactly what spoke to me and what I loved!

Here are some of those poems:

“Keepsakes

if you lend me your heart
I vow to not break it
I’ll keep it safe within mine
so no one can take it

and if ever you are lost
with nowhere to roam
reach for my hand
and I’ll guide you home”

I thought this poem was beautifully worded and wanted to share it with y’all.

” Fears

… but
I fear you
most of all
for how quickly
you became a stranger
when once
you were my closest
friend”

I think this happens to all of us. So I definitely knew the feeling behind this and it really spoke to me.

“The Dagger

I thought I knew you better than anyone
but even I could not see your sword
plunging straight into my heart and
now I am paranoid
that he will hurt me like you did
I have lost the ability to open my arms
for someone else to hold because
every time I do
I await another dagger
to break the scar that has finally healed”

OMG the truth behind this poem right here. It puts into words everything I cannot. Thank you for this Shelby, thank you.

There were so many beautiful pieces in this collection, you would seriously be missing out if you didn’t read it.

Review: It always takes me a long time to get through poetry books for the simple fact that I have to be in the mood for it. For me, poetry is more than a novel. I can easily connect to a story, but with poetry, I have to dig deep within myself to feel something.

It Starts Like This would have been the perfect poetry collection when I was heartbroken and searching for something more out of life. It would have helped me when I needed it and I believe this collection could easily help anyone who currently going through something hard in regards to love or searching for themselves.

One poem the resonates with me is, Mirror, Mirror:

"I saw her once
in a reflection
the one that used to be me
I barely recognized her
with eyes full of life
and a smile that grazed
her cheeks

when did I stop
loving her
the one that used to be me
a mirage in the mirror
reaching out
with soft fingertips
and a spirit so carefree

and just like that she
disappears
a tangible memory
of what I used to be
before I stopped loving myself
and my smile faded
and I never set myself free"

I have to say this is one of my favorites (and I have many that I bookmarked on my kindle) because it reminds me of when I was going through the toughest and only heartbreak and how I lost any type of love for myself. It reminds me of my past that I appreciate because without losing myself I wouldn't have found myself... That's what this poetry collection did for me.

It Starts Like This is for those who lost a love and is searching for a way back to themselves. It's beautiful.

Title: Tender and Beautiful

Review: A mix of “oohs”, “aahs”, & “damns”... That’s essentially what I kept saying throughout this whole book. (Clarification: I say “damn” in this particular context to mean “that hits deep/it’s written so well/holy crap I can’t believe he or she wrote that”—aka a good thing.)

I absolutely LOVE Shelby’s style of poetry! Everything about this book is just so “soft”! Whether it’s a sad, happy, or aesthetically pleasing effect, there’s a tenderness in her words/poems that soothes my SOUL.

At the time I decided to pick up this book, I really needed to read a poem like “Passion”. Struggling with the fear & panic of potentially losing my passion for writing, that last stanza really got me. An incredible reminder for all poets, writers, & dreamers.

This is certainly a book I’m honored to have on my bookshelf!

Review: 'It Starts Like This' is a collection of thoughtful and often intense poetry that explores love, loss, anger, and the unrelenting ache of loneliness and of grief. It's a collection which is highly relatable for anyone who has experienced the breakdown of a relationship or been let down by someone they trusted.

The poetry and expression are accessible and easily understood, and Leigh's imagery is often quite stark and raw, but that is where her strengths as a poet lie.
That being said, this is a book that is probably even better when picked up occasionally and read over time, instead of in two longer sittings, as I found that some of the imagery and ideas were repeated from time to time, albeit in different ways and in varied expression.

Even among the poems that didn't appeal as much to me personally, there are some incredibly powerful lines that forced me to stop and contemplate their truth and the magnificent way in which they were written. It should not be considered a criticism, though, that some poems appealed less than others: poetry is perhaps the most intensely personal and subjective form of writing, and what speaks strongly to one reader will merely whisper to another.

Leigh has penned some beautiful poems here, my favourites being 'Scrapes' and 'Fears'.
