Title: Best resource I've found so far on the subject. Not perfect but has details I've been looking for.

Review: This covers learning strategies, example schedules, and topics in chess that people need to learn. I've been having a hard time finding any advice besides generic "top ten tips" stuff.

He mostly focuses on 1500-2400ish players but it can be used for anyone. While he directs his example schedules towards people that have hours to study each day, there's no reason that someone on a tighter schedule can't use it too. However, one of his key points is that you can't get better unless you actually spend the time to study. This isn't a "shortcuts" book, it's a "how to study all the subjects deeply in an organized manner" book.

Only negative thing is that the book feels a tad bloated. Some things are repeated and verbose. That said, I just skim over those sections and it's fine. Also, there's some (in my opinion) random game analysis and puzzles that aren't relevant. It's not that they're bad, it's just that it doesn't feel like they belong in a book about study plans/habits.

Title: Insightful & informative with a few caveats...

Review: This book is designed to help formulate an effective, individual study plan that doesn't waste one’s time. In my view, this book is for tournament players rated 1400-2000 who are serious about increasing their rating. There are some very insightful and fresh perspectives on what’s worth studying and what isn’t. In addition, many common chess myths are dispelled.

The amount of recommended study time (over 30 hours per week) is completely unrealistic for most working adults. Only true chess nerds still living in their parents’ basement have that kind of time. If you’re looking for a chess study plan book for busy adults, this “ain’t” it. However, I agree with another reviewer that you can certainly tailor the book’s recommendations to your own schedule. Besides, studies show we only have so much focus per day and that breaks are important. Yes, I know improvement requires hard work - absolutely - but you don’t need to put in 30+ hours a week to improve!

What I especially like about the book is how he questions conventional wisdom about chess improvement. There’s an excellent focus on common study errors and how to fix them. I believe readers will benefit from the instructive prose alone, and that it's not necessary to play through all the instructive games in their entirety (the annotations are very dense). There are many helpful recommendations for study material (books/software), but he omits some of my favorites that have been invaluable to my improvement.

Once you get past the grammatical errors (there are more than a few) and the absurd study schedules, this is a helpful book. Despite being an experienced tournament player, I picked up a lot of helpful ideas.

Review: My first impression is this book is much more than a study guide. No question the book is targeting ambitious and talented players.

Much like the dated Modern Chess Analysis by Robin Smith this book identifies the (updated) resources and tools available to unlock the secrets of Chess and like Smith's book the examples from theory and the author's experience are a valuable glimpse into the practice of top players.

Even if you are not in a position to make the dedicated commitment to follow the study programs offered in the book, a seasoned chess player will find much to enjoy.

Title: Great Book for players needing direction on training

Review: This book was very helpful for me. As a 2000 USCF that was once over 2100, I've been looking for a good way to get back to my previous level. However, an abundance of materials available now has been an issue. Thankfully, GM Kuljasevic's book helps give players a clear direction and areas to focus on based on level, along with specific book/training approaches to use for different levels. This book also gives direct insight into what training looked like for him throughout the years and excellent examples to use.

This puzzles and exercises in the book are not for beginners (I'd say 1800+ for most of these). However, the book is good for players 1500+ that want help developing a training system and are willing to put in the work. Well worth it!
