Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte Book Review

Name: Mateus Grady Harsono
Rating: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Title: 4.6 stars. Amazing read for a new author; what it lacks in depth, it shines with originality.
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 22, 2022
Review: World setting: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Amazing world setting here that I think answers these questions:
1. What real communism will look like (the Eonia quadrant)
2. What if there is eternal renaissance (Ludia quadrant)
3. What if there's no modern technology involved in our lives (Archia)

It’s original and unlike anything I’ve ever read before (tbh I haven’t read that much fiction). The world setting is divided into 4 geographical locations (called quadrants) separated by land & sea. Each quadrant their own advantages and disadvantages, and they support each other.

There’s an agricultural quadrant with fertile lands but refuse to use technology at all (for fear of damaging their lands) whose main purpose is to provide sustenance for all 4 quadrants. The logistics for said sustenance & trade between quadrants is managed by another quadrant whose focus is maritime exploration; everything ship-related. One quadrant is geographically infertile & so cold, they can’t grow food so they have to rely on technology (opposite of the agricultural quadrant) to survive. Did I mention that the people of this cold quadrant is, well, cold? Literally emotionless and I'm not kidding. They also provide technological advancements for all (except that one who refuses). Last and most unspoken, there’s the quadrant who focuses on frivolity, art, and all good things in life (kinda like debauchery in my opinion)

World building: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The world is interesting, but the author’s skill to build the world, adding depth to them, is not the shining star here. I feel that while the setting is certainly unique, the author did not use them as much as she could. Most of the story is happening only in 1 quadrant; with a minor excursion to another. As such, the world lacks depth. Plus, the way the author builds the world is kinda boring (mainly through the Queen’s perspective in narrative voice)

Plot:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for the story
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for the plot twist
⭐️⭐️⭐️ for depth
⭐️⭐️⭐️ for the way the author tells it
⭐️⭐️ for intensity
⭐️⭐️ for guessability

Now this is where the author shines! The story is really unique. Sure, it does take some time to warm up to the world & the plot but once it gets rolling it’s very fast paced. Events in the book happened in the span of only 3-4 days! The intrigue, and that plot twist number 1 made me stopped reading for a while. There’s another plot twist that made me stop reading too but I won’t say what it is! For me, these 2 twists are what made the story interesting.

Yet, because it is soo so fast paced, some parts felt a little bit forced: dialogues felt like they’re meant to happen to progress the plot towards where the author wants it; not 100% natural. And the way she minced words: “eyes like moons” is too exaggerating for me. This, in turn, made it lack depth; which, combined with lack of usage of the built world, left the story to feel a little bit shallow.

Also what I feel lacking is the climax, the suspense, the stakes. It’s supposed to be something big, something life-changing & world-breaking, yet it doesn’t feel that way. Compared to a novel like Six of Crows, the intensity is like falling from the coffee table to falling from the top of a mountain; the suspense is real. Here, there is suspense; but not intense enough. It's more like the old image of Tom Hiddleston of "I'm going to kill you... (intense)... with ice creams & flowers".

That being said, the plot & final resolution is kinda predictable for me; who’s the real culprit, how it’s going to resolve, how the heroine (yes heroine I haven’t mentioned that) will overcome the final challenge is… not “wow” to me because I guessed it correctly.

OH AND THE ROMANCE, it feels a little unnatural for me.

Conclusion:
Considering she's a new author, I'm adding one star for extra credit! From what I've known, writing is not easy and putting world into words as she did? Even harder! Kudos for Ms. Scholte for bringing the world to life. I'll award this novel with 4.63 stars. Not going for a re-read, but I'm really excited for League of Liars which came out today. Just bought it and gonna give it a read this weekend!

Title: Four Dead Queens: Unexpected Fantasy/Sci-Fi
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 22, 2019
Review: 4/5 Stars

Author: Astrid Scholte

Publisher/Imprint: G. P. Putnam’s Sons

Edition: Hardcover, 413 Pages

Publication Date: February 26, 2019

Initial Thoughts:

Four Dead Queens is quite an adventure! Keralie, a thief, teams up with Varin, an upstanding citizen, to prevent an assassin from murdering the four queens of Quadara. Astrid Scholte has created a world split into four quadrants: Toria, Archia, Ludia, and Eonia. Each quadrant has its own queen. At first glance, it might seem these are echoes of elements from books like Divergent, but I think Four Dead Queens still manages to stand on its own fairly well.

Another interesting aspect of this book is its structure. The book is fast-paced, but I didn’t finish it as quickly as I had anticipated I would. It alternates between the POVs of Keralie, the four queens, and even the villain in the second half of the book. While this technique does create suspense and allow for us readers to glean insight into the minds and backgrounds of the queens, it does sometimes take away from the sections of the story that are focused on Keralie and Varin. Sometimes, I wish the focus had been more on these two characters rather than on the queens.

Characters:

Here is a brief overview of some of the characters:

Keralie is our Torian thief, trained from a young age to steal from a black market dealer figure named Mackiel. Keralie feels intense grief over an accident she caused that severely injured her father. She is a strong, clever young woman, adept at sneaking into forbidden places.

Varin is an upstanding Eonist messenger who gets caught up in the plot to murder the queens. He teams up with Keralie to try to stop the murders. He is admirably both loyal and honorable. Varin, like other Eonists, doesn’t show much emotion, and his “death date” is set at a young age due to a genetic defect of his. He also functions as Keralie’s love interest, and they do seem like a good match by the end of the story. However, I felt like I learned the least about who Varin is, and I think that has something to do with the focus on the queens’ POVs. I would have preferred to have Varin’s POV inserted somewhere, because by the end of the book, I still don’t know that much about him.

The villain turns out to be someone unexpected, and I won’t spoil who it is. But I will say that I was slightly disappointed. For some reason, she isn’t a compelling mastermind; in my opinion, she came across as more of a selfish, sniveling brat. But I suppose things wrap up well in the end.

Final Thoughts:

Here are some other points to consider:

The events of the book do occur within the span of a few days. That means that Keralie and Varin fall in love very quickly. I believe other reviewers have pointed this out as well. Whether or not this bothers you will depend on your particular readings tastes. If you don’t think about it too hard, it might not bother you.

At times, the characters’ reactions could be a bit dramatic. Here is one example: “His eyes held a flicker of longing, and I thought I might combust under his gaze.” To me, lines like these sound dramatic and a little cliche. The reaction to Varin’s “condition” could also be considered dramatic.

I question some of the Queenly Laws. Rules 7 and 8 require that the queens produce heirs, but they are not allowed to marry the father of their children. This is problematic since their physical intimacy would certainly create an emotional attachment and a desire to get married. Also, is it just me, or do Rules 13 and 11 contradict each other? One Rule says that when a queen takes the throne, she accepts responsibility to “rule the quadrant until her dying day.” But the other Rule says that a queen’s power can be passed to her daughter after death OR abdication. So, are the queens allowed to abdicate? Or does she have to remain queen until they die?

Despite my criticisms, there are some pretty good twists in the second half of the book. Overall, the ending is satisfying and heartwarming. Four Dead Queens is not mind blowing, but it is certainly entertaining. I truly enjoyed the suspense and action! It is fun to follow along with Keralie as she and Varin sneak around the palace.

Thanks for reading! I hope this review was helpful. Has anyone else finished Four Dead Queens yet? What did you think?

Content warnings: swearing (including several uses of the S-word), kissing/touching, implied sex (not described graphically), murder/violence
