Title: It's impossible to take this author seriously

Review: I wanted to take this book seriously, but when I got to page 116, the author made an incredibly offensive statement. "I was ashamed to even be an American citizen," he wrote. On the next page, he then went into detail about how he practiced the avoidance method completely - not exactly a productive disagreement by any means. At no point later in the book does he even talk about what he learned from his avoidance. It's as if it never happened. I can't read a book about productive disagreement when the author himself acted like a petulant child throwing a tantrum.

Further, I believe that if I'm going to read a business book, I should not be able to tell what the author's political views are. This was not the case in this book. The author very clearly stated his views and attempted to foist them on his readers. If I wanted to read a political book, I would buy or check out such a book from my local library. I had reached my limit at Chapter 6 and stopped reading - I will be donating this to my local library to do as it sees fit.

Title: A MUST READ!!!! Very Informative!

Review: I purchased this book immediately after reading a Goodreads review that said, "Everyone should read this book!". That one sentence grabbed me and I'm so glad it did. This is exactly what all schools out there need to be teaching. I have learned so much from this book. In a world that is full of arguments, in which ninety percent of the time have people yelling to no resolutions, this little book is packed with power! I can now see how much yelling I've been doing to absolutely no resolve. I now look forward to practicing what I've learned with results that end in productive arguments. I also intend to get this book read by as many people possible. Thank you Mr Benson.

Title: A must-read for anyone

Review: I think everyone should read this book. If only to better understand how much better our relationships (at work or at home) can be.

Disagreements are a part of life. There's no escaping them. And, as Benson explains exceptionally well in Why Are We Yelling: we shouldn't look to escape disagreements anyway.

Disagreements can be immensely rewarding for everyone involved, when approached tactfully. In this book Benson explains exactly how disagreements can benefit us, and how to go about approaching them using a number of succinctly laid out and well-articulated steps.

I found the book a delight to read and Benson's writing is superb. He sets the stage and provides ample real-world examples of the points he's trying to make. This is one of the highlight reads of the past few years for me. Since beginning the book I've found myself approaching conversations with my team, spouse, and friends, differently... for the better!

Title: Valuable--And Fun

Review: This lovely book stumbles onto most of the key principles we peacebuilders talk about and grapple with—and does so with grace and humor. He dispels many of the myths about conflict resolution, especially the (supposed) notion that arguing only leads us into trouble. In fact, as he points out, good arguments (occasionally including yelling) may be necessary if we want to find creative solutions to problems. Therein lies the key to the book and to productive disagreements in general on two levels. First, he asks us to think of our disagreements as including questions of evidence, emotion, and practical utility. Second and more importantly, he suggests that the best arguments are held intentionally in ways that open up opportunities for clarifying the issues I mentioned in the previous sentence while simultaneously makes new insights and initiatives possible. That’s particularly important in these troubled times because Benson advocates disagreements in which everyone’s biases and preconceptions—especially including you own—get challenged. Perhaps most importantly of all, unlike most of my colleagues who have written in this space, Benson brings his case close to home with real world examples, including many drawn from the Benson clan’s experiences in dealing with what he calls the “voice of possibility.”. A must read for anyone interested in our current ideological divisions or conflict resolution in general.

Title: Lots of good, but doesn't close the loop

Review: This book has lots of great ideas and research in it but I couldn't help but feel that the author was like an archer aiming at a target behind a deflector shield. The arrows seemed to fly straight and true only to dart off in the wrong direction at the last moment! I suspect this was due to his own(and possibly my own) cognitive bias, but at least we had a conversation about it. 😁

Title: Love it!! Approachable, Instructive, and Entertaining.

Review: Disagreement is a fundamental part of communication, and Why Are We Yelling breaks it down and provides a helpful set of tools for disagreeing productively. The book is approachable and it's well illustrated, too. I do wish that there were more details on some of the chapters, but I was happy with the length of the book overall. Overall, highly recommended!

Title: Not as practical as I’d hoped

Review: I thought this book would be more about understanding why people disagree and then figuring out how to work through a disagreement that you really need to work through. This book instead is about how to productively host disagreements for the sake of engaging in disagreement.

For example, at one point the author invites a bunch of people who disagree about gun control to dinner to have a disagreement. It never occurred to me that people would want to do this. I’m not trying to be negative, but I was looking for more “how to work on required disagreements in the moment” insight.

Review: This isn't your typical techie telling us how to run our companies the right way. It's a thoughtful book on what we can individually do to break away from the "us vs them" approach to conflict that's tearing our society apart.
