Review: While I love my computer science degree, I realized that it didn't teach me much about the things I actually needed to know to get a job as a software engineer. My major was too boiled down into math and code.That’s why I grabbed this book to learn the other skills that I’d actually need for my interview, and wow, I honestly wish we had a class where we read this book and nothing else. PEDALS is an excellent framework.I’ve read some other books on system design, but none of them made the process as clear as this one. It takes all of the vast thoughts and considerations in system design and organizes them into a clear step-by-step process.I learned more about system design in the first few chapters than I learned in years of CS classes.I’m trying to get jobs at companies like Facebook or Google, so there’s a lot of applicable material in the book: detailed explanations of how to approach common questions like how to design Instagram, Twitter, and autosuggest.I really love the way they walk you through the interview. It was as if I had a front-row seat and could listen to the turn-by-turn conversation.It's also incredible how practical and prescriptive this book was. For every part of the interview that you might get stuck on, the authors give you a clear step-by-step strategy to help you overcome it.They make it so understandable that honestly, anyone could read it.If you want to ace the system design interview with tactics that are actually useful, I highly recommend this book!!

Review: I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out how best to prepare for my system design interviews at Microsoft and Google including reading all the usual books, scanning blog posts, and reviewing GitHub repos.Save yourself time and get this book instead.I can confidently say that this is the first (and perhaps only) book to read for system design interviews. It does a superb job of teaching all the must-knows like designing system APIs, scaling architectures, drawing diagrams, estimating server and storage, and choosing the right data storage -- all in an easy-to-understand way. It was so clear and easy to understand that I felt like I could explain the system design to a 5th grader.The second half of the book has a lot of great system design case studies including:- How to Design Instagram- How to Design YouTube- How to Design Twitter- How to Design Google AutoSuggest- And othersRather than going into unnecessary detail and impossible technical jargon like other system design books I’ve read, this book gives you all the relevant information by breaking down everything into steps and clear explanations. Their explanations helped me understand more about the interviewer’s point of view, and how to design my system so I can align with their expectations.Cracking the Coding Interview is solid, but it is more focused on algorithms and data structures. While Cracking does have a slim 10-20 page chapter on system design interviews, it isn’t enough. Obviously, The System Design Interview goes into much more detail. The book differs in that it teaches you everything in an organized framework called PEDALS and makes it easier to envision in your mind the steps to take.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make an immediate impact and gain useful tactics to prepare for their system design interview.

Review: Some time ago, I became interested in both software development and product management. Everyone told me to get Cracking the Coding Interview and Decode and Conquer.Both are great (and mandatory!) reads for software engineers and PMs - lots of great insights and effective methods. However, the books don't talk much about something that comes up in both roles: the system design interview.The System Design Interview book (get the one by Lin and Patel) covers everything about system design that Cracking and Decode do not.The System Design Interview is essentially the holy grail of system design, digging deep into absolutely everything you need to know to prepare for your interview. The combination of actionable techniques, detailed walkthroughs of the systems design interview, and comprehensive overviews of key technical concepts make this an all-encompassing systems design textbook.As someone currently going through the hiring process for both software engineering and PM, I really appreciated the easy-to-read format of the book and the quick practice exercises interspersed throughout the chapters.I highly recommend this book.The PEDALS method is a useful and manageable recipe for mastering the system design interview, and has helped me get several bids, including some at FAANG.
