Review: You know it's weird when the prologue of a book is far more engaging and entertaining than the actual story that follows.

'A River of Royal Blood' is not a bad book, but it's far from being good, let alone great. While well written and the premise is a great idea, the story itself drags its feet to get anywhere remotely interesting. I found the characters boring and flat and I never got a sense of who they were in the moment. Eva was just a standard princess with a lukewarm personality. Nothing really stood out about her besides her inherited blood magic. Outside of that, she was a pretty forgettable character, even as I was reading her story.

I found the pace disjointed, and at times it felt like too much was going on in a given chapter, only for the next chapter to dump even MORE weighty worldbuilding and new characters into the mix who don't leave a lasting impression on the storyline. The biggest dealbreaker for me was in the way crucial plot and character-build moments are just glossed over in a span of a paragraph that just tells you what happened as opposed to letting us feel and taste that moment.

The world-building was intricate and the nonhuman characters were a surprise I didn't expect going in. There's a lot of info-dumping that bogs the pace down and I feel if the author just cut those paragraphs down and stuck to the main plotline than the story would have read a lot better.

One thing this book gets right is the court intrigue. I enjoyed seeing the characters plan their next moves carefully as opposed to other YA books where the characters just jumping into things and then getting effed up later because of poor planning. So that was a relief to see.

Final thoughts:

The book was marketed as a North African inspired fantasy novel, yet while reading, I didn't get a sense of that influence. To me, the story felt closer related to a bog-standard fairytale alike 'Maleficient' or 'The Nutcracker.' The prose and the overall tone and feel of the story gave me that impression.

Review: The concept of this book was what caught me up. Two sisters with a terrible tradition set forth before their birth to fight to the death for the right to become queen. One sister extremely reluctant to kill for the throne but with the will to live. I will say I had certain expectations throughout the book for the way the ending would turn out...none of those expectationa happened...which weirdly is great. I figured it could end in a lot of different ways, the ending definitely threw me for a loop, and I'm excited to see what happens next. I loved the world building, though it took me a little while to figure out different words and categories specific to the world. Slowly the different cultures, people and traditions unfolded throughout the story.
I hesitated on buying this book because of some of the reviews I read. But I'm honestly glad I did. I became empathetic for the MC Eva who was handed a pretty crappy deal of life from the start but still does what she can to live, isn't shy about knowing right from wrong despite what all traditions and people say around her. You start to see her come from a spot of despair to growing in her will to live and fight and meet some interesting characters along the way. I loved her supporters. There is a love interest in the story and it, while I liked the interest. I felt like their relationship wasn't flushed out much past an attraction and perhaps a shared empathy for each others situation. But i am excited to see it grow and blossom in the next book which I have already pre-ordered. If you are wondering there is some suggestive language but is overall clean! Would recommend for 14 and up, or mature 12 year old and up.

Review: Amazing debut novel!!! I pretty much picked it up 16 hours ago and found I could not drop it! As an avid reader and endless consumer of fantasy books, I picked up this story because a previous book I just finished was something I had to force myself to finish reading. The characters were toneless, the climax was lackluster, and the world was grey. But a River of Royal Blood!!!!

I could go on!!! I love stories with rich descriptions and actual lore, I LOVE WORLD LORE!!! I love a world that mirrors ours but has enough differences to literally let me slip into. I felt each characters voice as if they were there own, I understood and connected the most with Eva's grief and determination, hopelessness and need to live. Having lost my mother at 15, Eva's pain was exactly how I felt, and I kept me hooked to watch her piece together all the beautiful yet sad laid puzzle pieces, and deception and the constant worry of betrayal from all around her, even within her own heart! Slipping between memories of her sister and herself in their youth, her constant reminders of family before a ruthless tradition forced to be upheld...I want to say, let the naysayers in the previous comments be WIPED AWAY by my review!!!! I Just finished the first book and the cliff hanger; the resolution mounting towards a plot bigger than two human(spoilers lol) princesses; In world where Eva is learning it's NOT just about them; a pot stirring that dates back to the ruthless betrayal of Khimaer by human...GOD I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!!!
Expect alot of fan art, ESPECIALLY of Aketo and Baccha cuz wooooowwwww those descriptions were sizzling!!!
I supposed to sum it up lol, beautiful BEAUTIFUL pace, amazing descriptions, very convincing and relatable characters, beautifully thorough world, and an ever expanding plot all packed into wonderfully written piece of art makes one extra satisfied reader! I love being to a world as flawlessly as you've painted Akhimar with your words, and I look forward to more about Princess to be Queen, Evalina Grace Killeen💓
