Review: Introduction to Personalism is a long-overdue translation of the work of Spanish philosopher Juan Manuel Burgos, was published extensively in the personalist philosophical tradition. The book provides a comprehensive and detailed overview of the tradition to personalism, from its ancient roots to the revival of personalist thought in the twentieth, and now twenty first century. Burgos demon starts a mastery of philosophical tradition, and touches on most of the major figures in European and American Personalism, including the philosophers Emmanuel Mounier, Gabriel Marcel, Jacques Maritain, Maurice Nédoncelle, Luigi Stasfanini, Karol Wojtyła, Czesław Bartnik, Max Scheler, Dietreich von Hildebrand, Edith Stein, Martin Buber, Romano GuardiniXabier Zubiri, Pedro Laín Entralgo, Julián Marías, Borden Parker Bowne, Edgar Sheffield Breightman, Thomas O. Buford, Martin Luther King Jr., Randall Auxier, John F. Crosby and others. The major contribution fo the book, though, is Burgos' presentation of a new personalist proposal, Modern Ontological Personalism, which seeks to make the concpet of person the central structural concept for philosophical activity, and considers persons in univocally personalist categories rather than attempting to understand ourselves in terms of something else (e.g. rational animals). Modern Ontological Personalism seeks a synthesis of the best of both classical and modern philosophical traditions in the service of philosophical activity, human dignity, and transformation of society. This is a. just-read work for anyone interested in the nature and activity of the human person individually and in community.
