Review: My favorite of Jacqueline West's books so far! Love this story of Anders Thorson, the lead singer of a high school heavy metal band and Thea, the girl with supernatural powers that rumors seem to follow everywhere. Fascinating and riveting. Loved it!

Review: Everyone in town has heard of Anders Thorson and his band, Last Things. The metal group has made a place for themselves on the local scene and as their--especially Anders'--reputation grows there's no reason to doubt that the band is going to be big way beyond the town and even beyond Minnesota. With comparisons to Opeth and talent scouts circling, it's clear that Anders is prodigiously talented.

But Anders isn't sure if he wants to pay the price for all that fame. Especially when everyone is increasingly interested in Anders and only Anders. The band started as a project between friends. Leaving them behind isn't an option. Is it?

Thea Malcom has been keeping an eye on Anders for a while now. They haven't spoken, he may not even know her, but Thea is there at the back of every show. She's always watching. She says she's trying to protect Anders. But is she really? Or could she be the reason both his cat and his sort-of girlfriend have disappeared?

Things are changing. Anders will have to decide if he wants to let them and if he can trust Thea and her promises to keep him safe in Last Things (2019) by Jacqueline West.

Last Things is a supsenseful and atmospheric story with all characters assumed white. Vivid descriptions of the woods surround town and Anders' musical endeavors pull readers into this page-turner. Chapters alternate between Anders and Thea which works well to increase the tension in the plot as it becomes clear that Thea (and readers) know more about the strange occurences at work around Anders than the guitar prodigy himself.

Thea's mystery past and Anders' own reluctance to remember exactly what he promised away to get to this point raise further questions that move the narrative along to its dramatic finish. With Faustian bargain and palpable menace Last Things is an ideal choice for both fantasy and horror/suspense.

Review: I really enjoyed the author’s use of language in this book. I liked how they slowly explained the events occurring, without revealing too much, letting me become totally immersed into the drama. I could feel the intensity and the energy of this book which I didn’t put down until I had finished it.

I also liked that there weren’t many individuals to keep track of in this book. Reading this on vacation, I didn’t want to have to resort to keeping a lot of notes on it while reading it. I found that, I got so involved in reading it, I forgot to write down anything about it except for the first few pages.

The book centers around a girl named Thea who moved to Greenwood and lives with her Aunt Mae. Aunt Mae has a reputation around town as being witch, or perhaps a lunatic. Yeah, not a good one to have. Some think it’s because she’s a drunk and when she’s like that, she likes to talk. Her talking is not pleasant either. Aunt Mae tries to warn individuals about things that she has seen, things that haven’t yet occurred and that doesn’t settle too well with some individuals. Aunt Mae doesn’t move much from the couch, she keeps her bottle close to her and Thea makes sure that her aunt has a fresh supply.

When we meet Thea, it’s Friday night and she’s headed off to the Crow’s Nest to hear the band, Last Things. It’ll be a mixed crowd of high school kids to heavy metal fans. Last Things is a local band and they’re becoming quite popular. Anders started the group and when he plays, he gets lost in his music just like their fans get lost when he plays on stage. They put on quite the show and lately, the place has been packed.

Thea stays off to the side when she watches the group perform, she hasn’t missed a show, since she got in town. Back at Aunt Mae’s, Thea has been stockpiling items outside, taking great care to secure these items, hidden from sight. Why she’s doing this, I have no idea but the idea that she doing this to “lock them out,” intrigues me. Thea attends high school, where she doesn’t really fit in but she watches and she’s aware of her surroundings. She keeps an eye on Anders, he’s different than the guy who everyone loves on stage on the weekends. Is this a crush or it is something else? Does Anders even know about Thea? I was beginning to wonder what their connection was.

Thea doesn’t spend much time at home but when she does, she talks with her aunt. Thea and her aunt have a bond with “them.” Thea feels that “they” are becoming bolder and closer and Aunt Mae understands this. What they are talking about and how this all ties in with Anders was getting quite interesting as Thea’s behavior was getting stranger. I was all in and I couldn’t put this book down.

Title: Creepy, fun read!

Review: I got a really creepy vibe from this book, but also found it very fun to read. I liked the supernatural elements throughout the book, I thought it brought a lot of different aspects to the story. I also enjoyed the inclusion of a lot of the lyrics from the songs they were singing at the Crow’s Nest.

The story is told in alternating perspectives, one being Anders who is the lead singer of the band Last Things, the other being the new girl in town, Thea. Anders is the typical brooding musician at the beginning of the book. I enjoyed reading from his perspective especially when songs would “come“ to him. Thea is one of the most interesting characters I’ve gotten a chance of reading the perspective from. There is a lot of talk about her aunt Mae who she lives with and in turn her.

I enjoyed the story overall and found myself having a hard time putting the book down because of the way each chapter ended. This book was written so well, I can’t wait to pick up another book by this author!
