"Spitfire Pilot" was written in 1940 in the heat of battle when the RAF stood alone against the might of Hitler's Third Reich. It is a tremendous personal account of one of the fiercest and most idealised air conflicts - the Battle of Britain - seen through the eyes of a pilot of the famous 609 Squadron, which shot down over 100 planes in that epic contest.

David Moore Crook, DFC (1914 - 1944) was a British fighter pilot and flying ace of the Second World War.

Title: Entertaing and easy read.

Review: This book is a quick read. It is lighthearted yet carries with it the deep emotions of war. It combines the elation of flying and fighting, yet also, touches of the profound sense of loss he experiences when loosing a squad mate. There are moments of intense emotional sureness and aggressiveness, countered by moments of reflection and introspection. It covers the battle of Dunkirk, the channel conflicts, and The Battle of Britain (though none of this is expressly stated, one must keep in mind the time frame mentioned and apply that to the timeline of the war yourself). I thought there could have been a few annotations added by the editor to clarify the time line and a few other things that non-savy WW2 might find confusing. There also could have been a small appendix of flying terms and aircraft descriptions, again for the unfamiliar. All that aside the content is very entertaining and the descriptions of the air combat male this book a fun and easy read (not all war memoir's are easy to read. Coupled with the look into air squadron life during the time makes it a book that is awesome to read if you enjoy air combat, and stirring when you think the scale of loss and bravery of these young men.

Title: Firsthand Aerial Account of the Battle of Britain

Review: Decorated Flight-Lieutenant David Crook recounts his participation in the Battle of Britain with this quick, easy read. The author kept a diary during this period in his life, and we are privy to his adventures as well as some of his inner thoughts concerning air battle, shooting down enemy flyers (as well as losing fellow aviators), and the fast learning curve of those who discovered how to survive a dogfight.

Flight-Lieutenant Crook’s breezy style entertains as well as illuminates. Anyone desiring to gain some knowledge of this period in history but is leery of heavy historical reading should find this book to be a welcome source of intimate facts and anecdotes. This chronological memoir focuses on his personal reflections of what happened rather than an analytical examination of history. It would be a great start for those new to this era as well as a positive addition to anyone’s WWII library. Five stars.

Title: Lacking in depth

Review: First off let me say I have the utmost respect for all our flyers of all wars fought. The nerve and concentration during a dogfight must be overwhelming and to go up day after day to face certain death and then continue on with your duty till either the end of the war or your individual end takes a special individual we may never see the likes of again.
Now....as to the book. There is no preface so you don't really know the narrator or his uniqueness. His language is Linden style English with phrases such as " we were worked like n.....s"..are sprinkled about. We are not privy to his circle of friends aside from memes like" William B, or Jerry K." The action is quite repetitious with dogfight, bombing and the loss of friends repeated again and again. But the ending was like having a rug pulled out from under you. Just a snippet about flying and then.....nothing. Dead stop. I admire the Man greatly, the book, not so much.

Title: A “Greatest Generation” story … and a good one

Review: Pilot Officer Crook was a man of his time - one of “the few” to which Britain owed its survival during the bleak early months of WWII.

The reader should understand that this book was written almost as it happened, not years later with convenient lapses of memory. Crook admits exhilaration at downing German foes in his Spitfire, and takes a “stiff upper lip” at losses of his friends. He occasionally uses pejorative language - what we’d deem slurs - that he might have withheld later with a decade worth of enlightenment.

But reading his recollections reminds us of the courage and valor that saw the allies through to victory and made our current life, with all its nobility and flaws, possible.

We shouldn’t forget what they did.

Title: Authentic account of a Battle of Britain spitfire pilot

Review: This is not the full story of the Battle of Britain. It's a very authentic account of one Spitfire pilots experiences during that battle. He provided good descriptions of aerial combat from a fighter pilots perspective written in 1942, only two years after the battle. I was surprised to learn that the spitfire had such a high kill ratio to German fighters. No wonder the Brits won the Battle of Britain. I remember my father, who was a B-17 pilot say that "Spit 9's" would escort them to the French coast. That didn't do much good for them! So the Spitfire didn't have much legs and had limited use for the rest of the war but seemed to be the perfect machine for the Battle of Britain.

Title: Delightful personal account

Review: This book is a very powerful, first-hand account of the Battle of Britain. I think this makes for a wonderful complement to some more big-picture and analytical accounts. It helps to see things in such a direct way. I was not in the war, but I grew up with the stories and in the city of Rotterdam where it was to take till 1970 for the damage from the German bombardment in 1940 to disappear from sight by new development. What matters in the big picture was that the brave souls who fought the Battle of Britain gave the first real reversal to the Germans after their staggering successes with their Blitzkrieg in Europe. The Wehrmacht was a real force, but the Luftwaffe was much less developed and met its match in these defenders of great Britain.

Title: Nostalgic Remembrance of the Heroic Battle of Britain

Review: Although it lacks real depth or insight "Spitfire Pilot" does successfully portray the spirit, bravery and naivety of the RAF pilots of Fighter Command in the harrowing air war over Britain in 1940. We follow the aerial exploits of the author as he progresses through training to become a highly skilled Spitfire "ace" warrior. I enjoyed the period correct English vocabulary and slang of the RAF which made the story seem very authentic, persona and real. The book concludes on a happy note as the storyteller leaves his highly dangerous job in combat squadron for a training assignment, seemingly safer grounds for the new father (age 26). I was sad to read he died in December 1944 on a photo recon mission is his beloved Spitfire. Jolly good book with an authentic account of a key period of WW2 in England.
