Title: Accurate report on Honor Murder incidents omits the huge body of Islamic law mandating this practice

Review: Phyllis Chesler's book is an excellent report on honor murder incidents in Muslim countries and in the West. She clearly demonstrates that Muslim honor murders are distinct from Hindu/Sikh family murders.

While Ms. Chesler is accurate in her observations and reporting, her book is completely devoid of the ideological underpinnings of this barbaric phenomenon. It is as if she were standing at a street intersection and reporting on the many cars going by -- how cars stop at a red light and go at a green light -- without ever mentioning the voluminous traffic codes that regulate traffic and provide sanctions for those who disregard the rules.

It is important to understand that Muslim honor killings are mandated by 1400 years of sacred Islamic law and tradition that cannot be changed without undermining the façade of Muhammad's made-up religion. For those who are interested, here are the ideological mandates for Muslim honor murders:
Quran: Surah 18:74 and 18:80 -- a young man is killed for no apparent reason except to protect the parents from the plague of wickedness and unbelief.
Sunna of the Prophet --Sahih Muslim, Book 017, Number 4209: a woman pregnant from adultery is allowed to give birth and wean the child before she is stoned to death.
Sharia Law (Reliance of the Traveler), paragraph o8.1 and o8.7(14): Apostasy includes denying the obligatory character of Islamic law and is punishable by death. Sharia Law, paragraph o1.2(3 and 4), also states that there is no retaliation for killing an apostate or for "a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring's offspring."

Without addressing the clear mandates of Islamic ideology and law, we will never rid our society of the evils of honor murder.

Review: This book delves into the murderous custom called honor killings. These crimes against women are perpetrated by Muslims in the West, and to a lesser degree by Sikhs and tribal societies. . Perpetrators may include multiple family members, including mothers. The victims of this fatal violence are seen as dishonoring their families by seeking higher education, refusing arranged marriages, adopting Western ways or attempting to flee from domestic violence, among other forbidden activities. These behaviors are seen as so damaging to family pride that the victim's life must be forfeited, often in violent murders that include torture. Rape may also result in an honor killings. Most victims are daughters in their teens or early twenties. Tribal cultures, mostly in the Muslim world, allow (or even encourage) these terrible crimes. The murderers are seen, not as brutal killers, but as simply men acting in self-defense to prevent dishonor to the family name. Prosecution in countries where honor killings are frequent is non-existent or very lax. Honor killings are acceptable in societies where spousal and child abuse is rampant, where child marriages are tolerated, where arranged/forced marriages are the norm, and where women have limited rights in divorce, property, education, careers, and child custody. The author repeatedly makes the point that Western feminists have abandoned their Muslim sisters, and are loth to criticize a culture that leaves women utterly stifled and, in worst cases, brutalized. These feminists turn a blind eye to the real dangers Muslim women face in volatile societies where enforcement of stringent rules of behavior and dress is often erratic and unpredictable. This important window into Islamic mistreatment of women is highly recommended.

Review: “A Family Conspiracy: Honor Killing”, by Phyllis Chesler (New English Review Press, 348 pp., April 2018). Following are partial comments by Raymond Ibrahim in the June 20, 2018 “City Journal” online NYC-based magazine:

“Phyllis Chesler pioneered the study of violence against women in the late 1960s, concentrating on women living in North America and Europe. By 2003, she was writing about honor killings, based on newspaper accounts, Internet sources, interviews, and memoirs. She then embarked on a series of equally pioneering, meticulously researched, academic studies of honor killings in the West, but also in the Middle East and South Asia. These studies and over 90 articles on the same subject are collected for the first time in [this book] "A Family Conspiracy: Honor Killing".

“Chesler carefully distinguishes honor killings from “plain and psychopathic homicides, serial killings, crimes of passion, revenge killings, and domestic violence.” An honor killing is the murder of girls and women by their families because of supposedly disgraceful acts perceived to have brought public shame. Honor killings are a family collaboration and even considered by their perpetrators to be legally justifiable acts of self-defense, because the murdered girls’ dishonor is regarded as an aggressive act against their families. It demands a response.

“....Chesler looked at 172 incidents and 230 honor-killing victims. She gathered most of her information from English-language media around the world. “There were 100 victims murdered for honor in the West, including 33 in North America and 67 in Europe,” Chesler found. “There were 130 additional victims in the Muslim world. Most of the perpetrators were Muslims, as were their victims, and most of the victims were women.” Indeed, while Sikhs and Hindus do commit such murders, the honor killings in her study, both those in the West and in the rest of the world, are mainly Muslim-on-Muslim crimes.

“It is a measure of her intellectual integrity that Chesler goes where the data lead. Thus, her conclusion, based on the empirical evidence, is that “the origin of honor killings probably resides in shame-and-honor tribalism, not necessarily in a particular religion.” And she holds each religion—Islam, Hinduism, and Sikhism—responsible for failing to abolish, or trying to abolish, honor killing or femicide....”
