Review: This book will grab you immediately. Be prepared to be totally engulfed in this paranormal story from page 1. But. It’s an escape from reality so to enjoy it, remember that part please.

Cara and her daughter Janie have special powers. Talen, a 300 year old vampire, is tasked with protecting them….and taking Cara as his “mate”. What happens between them begins with arguments, Cara tries to run because of course she isn’t trusting the motives of this vampire she unwillingly finds so attractive, leading ultimately to hot, hot sex. Theres a lot of that in this book and yes, real emotions come into play. Vampires aren’t evil here. They are warriors, they are hot and very protective. Oh and they overuse the term “mate”.

This story is one to get lost in when you need a diversion. I did and this story worked perfectly for me. I even loved it when Talen and Cara discovered they could communicate thru their thoughts. Yea. I even loved that! And Cara’s daughter is the REAL SPECIAL ONE……..more to come in future books I’m sure.

It’s a complicated, intense plot, a war breaks out between many paranormal characters, there are shape shifting lions, and Cara’s life is in danger more than once. Emma, Cara’s sister, who also has special powers, turns up toward the end and she’s a feisty addition.

Title: Strong start to the Series

Review: It is always a delicious pleasure to crack open the first book of a new series with anticipation for what is to come. I adore creative worldbuilding, paranormal elements and strong characters that are accompanied by broad story arcs that will span a series. All that is present in this one. I learned about this series from reading a few author guest posts and reviews last year and I was really glad to finally be able to give the first book a try. Fortunately, I already have the next two books ready to go because I really want to know what happens next for a certain couple that I just know will involve fireworks.

Cara is a single mom and scientist who works with plants. Her whole world is upended one night when her daughter wakes her with a premonition that bad guys are coming, but right on the heels of this announcement a big handsome stranger announces that she's in danger and she and her daughter Janey are coming with him. Naturally, Cara resists this insane announcement, but the capable dangerous guy doesn't take 'no' for an answer. Even after revealing who and what he was- a vampire-like race of protectors- and who and what Cara was- his fated mate and yes, they were getting married so he could end some of the danger to her, he still didn't take 'no' for an answer.

Talen only meant to rescue the gifted female human and her even more gifted daughter who are coveted for these gifts by another race similar to his own who seek to control the world through power and tyranny, but it is not long before he is hit with the knowledge that Cara is his mate. He will do what it takes to keep her and Janey safe because now they are HIS. Too bad Cara isn't entirely onboard with this plan. She goes along with him because he's her ticket to safety and he can protect her daughter not to mention they share an explosive attraction, but she makes it crystal clear that he doesn't have her absolute trust and she keeps part of herself from him.

The story moves along at a feverish pace most of the time as Talen and Cara battle the bad guys, try to get intel into what the bad guys are up to, do some rescuing and dance around their feelings for each other. They are surrounded by Talen's family of brothers, their shifter friends and Cara's feisty older sister Emma. It was an exciting ride right down to the finish and leaves some enticing threads dangling for the next book in the series to pick up.

I really enjoyed this story and learning about the shadow paranormal world that exists alongside humans through Cara's eyes. I liked how the element of danger was always there because the bad guys were smart and playing for keeps. The relationship plot was enjoyable and realistic. While Cara and Talen were attracted to each other, I liked how it took some time before real love was hinted at and then really developed. Cara was a great heroine. She had a lot thrown at her and she didn't just roll over and take it, but other than one stupid mistake that was understandable, she also didn't make dumb decisions. Talen is total alpha male. He has the 'mine' down pat. He wants to dominate and for Cara to submit. He plans to look after her and make her happy, but he doesn't think he's capable of love. I loved how Cara led him on a merry chase that definitely made him quite aware that his heart was very much engaged in things. They both have a lot to learn about each other and about love. Toss in all the other wonderful characters that were introduced in the story including Janey's mysterious dream friend and it makes me really anticipate the rest of the series.

Those who enjoy steamy pararnormal romance and vampire stories should definitely give this a try.

Review: I wasn't familiar with this author but the synopsis of this book sounded good, so I decided to try it. I bought the entire series on faith since the books were on sale at a good price, but this is the only one I've read thus far. I have mixed feelings about it and am rounding my three and a half rating up to a four.

I loved the world building and it was easy to get totally immersed in it. The author did a fantastic job with the types of characters, their abilities, their limitations and the conflict between them. I was definitely engaged.

Characterization was also a strong feature of the book. For the most part, the protagonists were very likeable, especially the little girl, Janie. However, there were some weaknesses that lowered my rating. I didn't have a problem with the instant overwhelming sexual attraction between the hero, Talen, and the heroine, Cara. It is common in paranormal romances and the author gave a good explanation for it, as part of the world building. Therefore, there was an acceptable reason why the heroine couldn't resist the hero. What did bother me was that the hero was borderline abusive. He was portrayed as a wonderful, loving, gentle male who had diplomatic skills as well as his abilities as a warrior. On some occasions, he didn't explain things to the heroine until after the fact. He ordered her about, but didn't sit down and discuss issues. Not very diplomatic.

As well, Talen threatened Cara with punishment a few times and I was afraid there was going to be a spanking scene. Spanking doesn't do it for me as part of a sex scene, but to each his or her own. However, used as punishment is a real deal breaker for me. The books would have been returned immediately. Talen's good characteristics balanced what I considered to be the bad, though, so I still liked the book.

Cara annoyed me at times. Most of the time she was likeable, but in some circumstances she came across as a stubborn brat. Again, this wasn't enough to spoil the story, which was enjoyable, despite her less than perfect characterization.

The author created good, believable villains. They were suitably evil and contributed to an exciting storyline.

The storyline itself was great. The good versus evil conflict, the 'fated mates' romance, and the concept of children who were psychics and destined to save the world, made for a very enjoyable read. It definitely engaged me and I read the book in one sitting.

What I really hated about the book, besides the hero's emotional abusiveness, was the interminable sex scenes. This is very subjective and I know a lot of readers view numerous sex scenes as a plus; I don't. These sex scenes were well written but there were too many and they were too long. The book was definitely not a sex book with a thin plot, but I prefer a higher ratio of plot to sex scenes, than what the author wrote. In all honesty, I think the balance the author provided would be just right for a lot of paranormal romance readers, just not for me. I ended up skimming over those pages.

In the final analysis, I did like the book very much. If I hadn't already purchased the rest, I would have done so after reading this one. The author wrote well and there were just a few typos, but the writing mechanics were good. One reviewer commented that some of the wording sounded like English used by a non-native speaker, but I didn't see that. However, I'm Canadian lol, and my speech patterns don't always match American ones.

I recommend this book. The hero wasn't the most well written one I've seen, but he was acceptable and the story was strong enough to outweigh his flaws. Those who prefer less sex in their romances shouldn't have a problem skimming over the sex scenes, and again, the story mitigated any annoyance resulting from it. I think it is a fact of life that paranormal romances will be a bit heavy on the sex now, so as long as the reader has made peace with that, it is possible to still enjoy a well written one like this one.
