Title: Authentic History of the Vikings.

Review: Extremely well researched work by the author and stands as one of the (if not THE) best books on the history of Scandinavian culture and conquest. Be aware, that it wasn't all conquest though, as is pointed out in the book. It was also conversion, initially forced but eventually voluntary and even enthusiastic.

Have to admit, I was initially skeptical since I bought this book to meet a family member half-way with regard to their fascination with popularized Viking culture. Bought two copies, one for them and one for me and made a deal-- let's both read it and then talk about how history really played out and set aside some of the sensationalized fluff that modern culture applies to early Scandinavia and the Vikings.

This is an easy read in the sense that the author's style reels you in and keeps it very lively and interesting, but at the same time it is a great history lesson.

Review: Herman was an excellent best-selling author once and his writing and research usually shine. But in this book, he gives us too much conjecture. The book is a Bait and Switch-- how Scandinavians Conquered the World is the bait. You do get Viking history and Scandinavian contribution to civilization at the start. But---then it slowly becomes about other peoples who had 'similar fighting spirit'. The rest of the book is devoted to other stories. Sadly, this waters down the contributions of Scandinavian spirit that were advertised. Scandinavians have contributed heavily to western civilization and their contributions shouldn't be diminished in a work that literally advertises them.

A better title would be 'The Viking Heart' How the Spirit of the Warrior in all of us, Influenced Civilization'. Because you aren't getting Scandinavia as promised. On the other hand, Herman's 2001 bestseller, "How the Scots Invented the Modern World', really was about the Scots! In 20 years, Herman's focus has changed.. It's a bait and switch for himself as an author too.

Herman even says in the book why he did this. He repeats several times that he fears contributing to white heritage because it could promote identity. He goes so far to guard against this personal fear as to call the mix of "Danes, Norwegians, and Swedes, with some Finns and Slavs thrown in", as 'diverse' and 'not one race'. He leaves out that these peoples were indigenous to Scandinavia, and that they shared one language, and he completely ignores the white elephant in the room.

Like Native Americans who sometimes fought each other and sometimes made alliances, Viking Scandinavia did not have different countries that divided the people and their villages and tribes. That came much later. They shared a single language till around the mid 14th century when it evolved into the separate modern Danish, Swedish etc. They shared a single culture till about the same time. No historian should fear facts. With 'How the Scots Invented the Modern World', Herman was a historian. But with this book Herman is just a narrative writer.

Because it's too tough an act to pull off. When you want to write about indigenous white people, but have to periodically shoe-horn in a completely modern concept of 'inclusivity,' the shoe never fits. Vikings left their DNA behind wherever they went...that is not 'inclusivity' like Herman tries to soften up; that is conquest and rape. Rape and conquest, along with slavery and human sacrifice, were the way of most of the world at the time. Settling in the lands you conquered to mingle with the remaining population you didn't hack to pieces, happened because the Vikings were good at conquest.

Maybe historians will be able to write again sometime, about history, and not have to slam a modern political hammer down on their talents. Let's hope another 20 years bring another Herman best-seller. This one is not it. 'Scots' will remain in my library forever. 'Viking Heart' has already been donated.

Review: so much research went into it, but the spigot is torqued!

first rewrite the book in three tomes: heart, stomach, brain. each ending on a told you so, next is..
a viking life trilogy.
then the first section should have detailed modern maps of the action . overlaid on googlemaps. one map per page! tired of schlepping an atlas or globe around whiler reading.....

then every name should include birth and death year so instead of interrupting and looking up you can place the action in context without interruption, helps understand.

hey hermann: if you are into worldclass viking mentality: stauffenberg is a household swedish name . you could dig it up and should add him to wallenberg's. come-on, man. lindberg ended a nudist exhibitionist sexual derelict wreck.....

then putin's viking ancestry and what he doesc now to ruz ukraine....as a follow up book: the end of the viking saga?

Title: A very good, readable, and entertaining review of the Northmen and their descendants

Review: I enjoyed this book. It is a well-written and very readable general survey of the history and cultural contributions of the Scandinavian people. I'm not sufficiently "woke" to appreciate the over-wrought and unnecessary apologies for the historic racist and sometimes genocidal excesses of some branches of the Nordic clan. Similarly, the author's repeated condemnation of our ancestor's involvement with slavery is a little tedious and adds a note of self-righteousness that detracts from his narration. Folks who are too sensitive to take history for what it is, warts and all, probable should just read fiction, so that perfectly fine authors like Mr. Herman don't feel obligated to genuflect to their preoccupations.

Review: During my navy career I’ve had the opportunity to travel to several Scandinavian countries and fell in love with their people. I have always wanted to learn more about the rich history of Scandinavia. I had no idea of how far and wide their travels took them until I read Viking Heart. Their influence in the migration ages of America are quite telling and carried America to greatness to current day. A must read for history enthusiasts.
