Review: Cece is my daughter and I am so very proud of her for baring her soul to write El Deafo. She worked 5 years to write and illustrate her graphic novel and it carries so many, many messages to everyone who reads it. I had hoped Cece would write this book ever since she started having her Sock Mobkey books published. Title: Awesome book to teach disability awareness!

Review: My nine-year-old daughter is in love with graphic novels for girls right now. She is an excellent reader but she is not interested in books written in any other format right now! I bought my little girl this book because I work with people with various disabilities.While I feel like my daughter has a certain degree of awareness of people's differences, barriers, and abilities because of my job, there is nothing like an autobiographical perspective to teach her about the real-life experiences of someone who deals with a barrier such as a hearing impairment. Cece is real, easy to relate to, funny, and struggles with all of the same things that all little girls do, but on top of that, she has to cope with trying to fit in despite her assistive devices and feeling so different. My daughter cried several times while reading this book because she empathized with Cece and felt like she knew her. She has now read "El Deafo" four times and is reading it to me as well when we are in the car together. This is a wonderful book that helps with children's awareness of disabilities and lets them know that persons with barriers are the same as they are. Cece's story gives kids insight into what it is like to grow up with a hearing impairment and includes awareness of how you should (and should not!) treat people with disabilities. This is awesome for kids to learn and I wish more adults were more aware of these things as well!! I love this book and I know my little girl will continue reading it again and again. Bravo!!!

Review: I cannot say enough good things about this book! I only read it because I read all of the books I buy to give to the older kids in our family (to make sure they are truly age appropriate), and I am so happy I did.

El Deafo is a graphic novel about a little girl who loses her hearing at the age of four after a bout with meningitis. On the surface, much of the story is devoted to her self-consciousness about her deafness and the large hearing aids she has to use to compensate. At its core, however, it is a timeless tale about the worthy and sometimes difficult endeavor of finding a true friend. As in real life, the main character has successes and setbacks, and she learns a variety of important lessons along the way. It is charming, uplifting, funny, and very touching.

I would recommend this book for anyone age seven or eight (depending on reading ability) to 100+. The graphic novel format provides context clues and further insight for newer readers; for example, there are daydreaming sequences throughout the story which could normally be confusing, but in El Deafo the separation from the main story is crystal clear. In addition to the increased clarity, I thought the graphic novel format added a lot to the story in terms of emotional depth and humor.

I finished El Deafo yesterday, and took just enough time to order a couple more copies before starting it over again!

Review: My child is an advanced reader and read El Deafo at age 8, but I noticed her classmates are now reading it at 11--and she's re-reading it. And my husband and I loved it too. It's not just a graphic novel, it's great literature, and deserves every award it's gotten.

Review: My daughter has a hearing loss, but refuses to wear her hearing aides on a regular basis. I bought this book for her. Initially, she balked at the idea of reading El Deafo when I told her what it was about. However, she was so impressed that I read the book from cover-to-cover the day it arrived, she is showing interest in it now. The book is illustrated like a comic book. The author, Cece Bell, really gives great insight into the world of a deaf child. Her examples of how much hearing people just don't get what it's like to be deaf are both poignant and amusing. She's an expert on the subject because she has lived it.

Title: Amazing!! My daughter with cp loved this book!

Review: This is a great book for elementary age children. I bought it for my daughter who has some big physical and learning challenges of her own, and she loved it. Chapter after chapter provided opportunities for me to talk with her in a positive and empowering way about her own experiences with a disability, especially Cece’s “bubble of loneliness.” It was empowering for both of us to read about a real girl who faced similar challenges with such bravado and wry wit. But it also deals with the regular challenges and adventures of being a kid—what to do about friends who are not a good fit, trials at school, summer playtime, first crushes (this part was hilarious, especially the graphics). I leant the book to an 8-year-old girl with no disabilities and she read it straight through in 1 night, and then her younger brother read it too. They both loved it.

Title: A Beautiful Story for Every Age to Enjoy

Review: My 11-year-old son and I have formed a 2-person "book club" and this was our inaugural selection. What a beautiful, touching story that struck the perfect tone of goofiness and realism. It inspired several great conversations about family, disabilities, friendship, and growing up. The kind of meaningful conversations that every parent (and child, I think/hope) cherishes for the rest of their life. Thank you Cece Bell!
