Title: A medical-legal thriller

Review: A legal-medical thriller. It details the fine line doctors who treat pain with opiods have to walk. Reduce the pain but don't let patients get addicted to the treatment drugs. The doctor discussed in the book crossed that line and was found guilty by a jury for many crimes, including those involving the deaths of a couple of his patients. He lost everything as a result, including his freedom, his medical license and his family who then moved back to China.

Bismuth jumps around in time throughout the book. I'm sure this is bothersome to some readers, but I was okay with it. She also injects a lot of her personal life, including her matrimonial problems, into parts of the book. I found this to be annoying, distracting and irrelevant. But all in all, a good, attention griping read.

Review: This book truly strikes a balance between fascinating true crime + a welcome look behind the curtain of the author's struggles in her own personal life, the latter of which helps you to embrace her and fiercely root for her success. I -- quite literally -- only put the book down sleep. A must-read for not only true-crime fans, but also anyone who knows (or who is) someone touched by the opioid epidemic.

Title: Dope Peddling Doctor

Review: Charlotte Bismuth's "Bad Medicine" tells the too familiar tale of a physician, Dr. Stan Li, who became a dope peddler. In poignant tight prose she demonstrated how Li was more evil than a dope peddler. Perceived as a physician by his victim's family members, they brought their loved ones to Dr. Li, paid his cash fees, and paid for their prescriptions. thinking it was medicine. Following 4 years of trial preparation and a 4 month trial, Li was brought to justice by the efforts of the office of the Manhattan District Attorney. The book is narrated from the perspective of the author, who was an attorney on the prosecutor's team. It is a personal memoir which recounts both the personal and professional challenges confronted by the author. The investigative and legal considerations were well explained. The books greatest strength is its perspective. The Pharmacist, a Netflix 4 part miniseries, takes an equally personal view encompassing a dope peddling doctor. It is an excellent complimentary source.

Title: Thrilling read- authentic, informative and compelling

Review: Bad Medicine reads like a true crime thriller about the gripping and landmark case of a corrupt MD and his role in facilitating opioid addictions and deaths. The author performs an excellent job at educating the reader on opioids, schematics of the law and intertwining the deeply personal and inspiring story of her own life while working this historic case. You will be unable to put this book down and you will leave with a greater and possibly, more compassionate understanding of addiction, pain and the dark side of medicine that has been poisoned by greed. This story will stay with you long after you finish the book- one of the best books I have read in years.

Review: A very good read. I enjoyed the legal/medical/investigative aspects and also the author’s willingness to share her personal struggles, as well as her efforts to humanize people addicted to drugs who were victimized by both an errant physician and pharmaceutical companies, even if they were complicit to some degree in their victimization. I am a forensic psychiatrist and have shaken my head many times at how long it takes to get bad doctors out of practice. The author and her colleagues deserve praise for taking on the case and seeing it through.
