Title: An important read for parents and students, alike
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2018
Review: I was a very quiet kid, someone who watched and listened, tried to understand why people were the way they were, made the choices they didβgood and bad. To this day, when I happen to see a photo of someone who stood up so faithfully for what they believed in, clinging to the hope that things could improve if they just kept chipping away with their voice and actions, I reflexively place my hand on their image as if it could somehow connect me to them. As if it could somehow tug me closer to understanding how they persevered. As if it could somehow allow them to give me advice on what was stirring in my heart as I watched and listened to the world around me.
In this novel, Justyce McAllisterβa bright, motivated, top-of-his class studentβtakes it one step further. As he navigates a contemporary Atlanta where he is still seen more for the color of his skin than the content of his character, he regularly writes to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a journal, hoping that it will help him put Dr. Kingβs teachings into practice in order to manage everything thatβs thrown at him.
I donβt want to give away the exact situations he faces, but I will say this: there is a safety in fiction that allows us to witness and begin to understand the harder stories and truths we flinch from in real life. Books like this get important views considered, get important conversations started. As a white person, I needed to get to know Justyce, for Iβve never been in his shoes, and the fact is that his fictional shoes are worn by millions today. As a mother to white children, I needed to own this book in order to place it into my kidsβ hands and ensure the messages inside it are nailed home. Over and over again, until things do get better.
I highly recommend this book, and hope it gets into as many hands and hearts as possible.

Title: Hard-hitting and totally unputdownable!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2017
Review: Okay, so I'm going to get this out of the way first. If you've read DEAR MARTIN, read THE HATE YOU GIVE. If you've read THE HATE YOU GIVE, read DEAR MARTIN. If you recommend THE HATE YOU GIVE, recommend DEAR MARTIN too. These books talk to each other. I'm not going to compare them because that's not what this review is about--I'll leave that to someone else.
DEAR MARTIN is a lightning fast read--and it's structurally neat with like almost play-like dialogue exchanges--and it's telling a heartbreaking and important and hard-to-look-away-from story. I love Jus. He's a wonderful character. His mom is so real, and his teacher Doc is awesome. And his friends are people I want to know. No spoilers, but this to say, I wasn't expecting the plot of this book to go the way it did: that is, the novel itself wasn't predictable.
Although, yeah, of course, I was expecting it too go where it did--since this book is exactly what's happening in the US right now.
All in all, an amazing read that everyone, and I mean everyone should read. But also, the story and characters are so real that there's pleasure in reading this book too.
I cannot wait for Nic Stone's next book.

Title: Finally found some YA I love
Date: Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2020
Review: YA fiction was not something I previously enjoyed, but I found myself enjoying this book and landed on a kick, because I enjoyed the book I read after (Monday's Not Coming). Dear Martin addressed violence towards Black people, and Black Lives Matter, in a way I had not been able to verbally do to my white, conservative paternal family members who only want to claim Native blood for the potential benefits they will receive. I'm Native through my mom's side, and so I don't really feel like I fit into either white/black communities, so I often feel like I'm just hanging out in the cracks until someone tells me where I fit in (I'm estranged from my mom, who used her birth family, who isn't contactable, so it's not like I can find any real answers without a lot of legwork). However, the issues brought up in this book, even though "Dear Martin" is a work of fiction, helped me sort out my issues with the "All Lives Matter" mentality and stand up against those who think they're right because they're white.
This is the type of book that should be required reading in schools. I loved the diction and how realistic dialogue and inner thoughts felt. I loved so much and am keen to read more by this author.

Title: mandatory reading for the indoctrination of children to the me too mentality

Review: Im brown, employ black and white. My kids are white, their friends, gf/bf are black white and brown. This is absolute bullmalarky. We live in the south, and even we know that you get treated how you deserve. if youre trouble youre gonna catch trouble. If your straight and narrow youre not going to have problems. are there crappy people all over, yes. Is that the standard? absolutely not!
stop with this mess and let folks do what they do without this constant lie.
