Review: This ambitious tome is a grand compendium of generalizations from every field of study which seeks to reveal the patterns of existence and map our development through it. Often referred to as Wilber’s magnum opus, “Sex, Ecology, Spirituality” carries the reader from the sciences of matter and biology to the psychologies of the individual, the ideologies of cultures, and the politics of societies, demonstrating how in each example, we evolve in leaps to achieve ever greater perspectives (or fail to do so for reasons made explicit).

The key insight here is this: Love, transcendence, and creativity are inherent properties of reality and manifest in every sphere of being. It’s a beautiful, unifying metatheory that is worth the struggle to read it. But yes, it is a tough read. Wilber tends to focus on the nuances of his points rather than baldly stating them; he has an annoying habit of relying on long quotes from much older sources; and he often drops names without introduction, assuming his reader matches his erudition. Worst of all, I’d estimate that a full half of this book is devoted to whipping the dead horses of key insights that were adequately explained much earlier. I finished the first third feeling expanded and excited; I finished the rest frustrated and disappointed.

What follows is my best attempt at a one-paragraph summary:

At every developmental stage, the opposing tensions of separation and union squeeze us towards transcendence. We are individuals, and yet we are also instruments, so the rough borders of self and service (right and responsibility, intrinsic value and extrinsic value, consistency and completeness) rub and chafe with every thought, every feeling, every action. From these unstable contradictions, an excruciating incompleteness builds. If we are brave enough to embrace it, we are rewarded with an ecstatic rebirth into a deeper identity with a wider, multidimensional worldview. With wisdom, we negate our ego (without dissociation), and with compassion, we integrate our ego (without regression). But here, in this new reality, the friction between individuation and relationship begins again. Stage after stage our evolution progresses, birthing ever greater freedom and love, until—at our highest and deepest—we achieve mystical union with the Absolute, which is groundless Emptiness. We become “the clearing in which all wholes and parts arise eternally.”

”Going within me, I am finally free of me: and that is a timeless liberation from the fetters of being only me.”

I’m glad I read Wilber’s masterpiece, but it’s certainly not for everyone. If you would appreciate an undergraduate education with your spiritual insights, it might be a good choice.

Review: I believe Ken Wilber spent five years researching the material for this book, and it shows. I read the 2nd edition eighteen years ago in paperback, and came back for the 1st edition in hardcover. Still many things to learn, even on a second reading.

My respect for Ken Wilber has gone from mild to high after re-reading this book with updated preface, discovering that he wrote this book in righteous anger, as he counters the worldwide infestation of Cultural Marxism, Pluralistic Relativism and full-blown Postmodernism - the sick, bankrupt, but dominant ideology propounded from every corner and crevice.

This book is a deep and masterly look at the concepts and realities of Hierarchy and Holarchy. It is an excellent carry on from the work of many holistically-minded thinkers, especially of Arthur Koestler who first conceived of holon theory.

To his credit, Ken does justice to the thought of Hegel, Schelling, Whitehead, Emerson and other Idealists and sages. I'd have liked it if he had have included the great George Berkeley. But few writers ever mention him and his ideas today, so it's not too surprising.

Nevertheless, if your interested in dismantling the principles of Materialism, this will be a veritable Bible. Ken takes down the silliness scientifically, which is a commendable feat and asset.

Ken brilliantly explains the central ideas of Jean Piaget and particularly of the great poet and thinker Ralph Waldo Emerson. There are also beautiful and inspiring sections dealing with the mystical experiences and insights of St. Teresa of Avila.

In forthcoming editions it would be nice to see bolder opening dedications to both Georg Hegel and Friedrich Schelling, and more on Berkeley of course.

I recommend Arthur Koestler's superb trilogy:
"Sleepwalkers"
"Ghost in the Machine"
and "Act of Creation"

These are a must have for fans of Ken's ideas. These three books are becoming increasingly hard to find, and soon will be selling for exorbitant mark ups. Get them while you can.

Review: As usual, Wilber presents a logically-unfolding argument and ties the threads of development together in a weave that illustrates a coherent picture of the human and our place in the interconnected web. I think he is the most important developmental philosopher of the century as, due largely to him, we now have good maps of human psychology-- and the places where its development can go wrong--that are badly needed by the therapeutic psychological arts.
On the other hand, Ken's books remain difficult to read because he is so concerned that his points get instilled, that he repeats/recapitulates his arguments in 10 different ways for each one! I'd give him 5 stars but for this.

Review: Not Wilber's best writing. In my opinion, his first book, "Spectrum of Consciousness," was his best writing, although his later work on AQAL/integral theory is very insightful. "Sex, Ecology, Spirituality" is a laborious 789 pages (including notes) that is so redundant that it seems the author is infatuated with his own prose, and takes 30 pages to say what I got in 1 page. In the note section, there are 3 notes that drone on for over 20 pages! And this is only the first of 3 volumes. It was such a turn off, that having just finished all 789 pages, I don't have any desire to take up volumes 2 and 3. That's not the sign of a good writer. I enjoyed his "Sense and Soul" as an audiobook, but found his conclusions in "Integral Spirituality" absurd. (See review). 3 stars is being generous.
