Title: Informative and Entertaining

Review: This is certainly an excellent book, and despite the "heaviness" of the subject matter a lay reader can breeze right through it.

The unspoken purpose of "How to Die in Space" is to disabuse the general public of any incorrect ideas we might've gotten from watching too much "soft" science fiction over the years. It is written from the POV of a would-be space explorer who might not be aware that much of the cosmos is, in fact, irradiated beyond the acceptable limits of human survival -- assuming, of course, we overcome the vast distances.

In this case, concepts of astrophysics are conveyed with humor, not complex equations (save for one obligatory appearance of E=mc2). The humor is what makes the text approachable, although to be honest I thought there were times the author was working far too hard to be entertaining. Often his style worked, but several times the jokes and puns were forced and off-putting; in these passages, I wished the author just stuck with the actual subject matter, which was fascinating on its own without any of the embellishments.

That said, I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Review: I very much like the subject matter of cosmology and astrophysics. This book has both. Which gives it some merit. It is written in a tongue in cheek style that I sometimes felt was amusing but also found annoying at times. The editing is so sloppy that it detracts from the reading enjoyment. I tried to return this title but found that I had exceeded the deadline. I had left it on my device for a couple of weeks before I started reading it.

Review: The author tries too hard to be funny. Tries so hard that he fails to link a thoughtful connection between his topics. He doesn’t spend nearly enough time discussing fundamentals to actually teach anything, and then he doesn’t bring the whole discussion into anything resembling advice for a space traveler to avoid in order to not die. This book doesn’t do enough teaching nor is it funny enough to be an “advice column.” I’m not sure how this book got published but it’s a waste of time even for those who have a mediocre understanding of celestial physics. DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME

Review: This was the best non-fiction book I have read in a long time! I could not put it down. Paul Sutter is an excellent teacher and author. His sense of humor rescues what could be dry hard science and keeps it fun.

I always wanted to go to outer space. Mr. Sutter might have just discouraged me with his many ways to die.

I highly recommend the Audible version as his voice is so expressive and full of fun. This might be a legit class, and this its textbook. It is a class I would have wanted to take over and over. Maybe eventually, I'd get an A. If not, I still would have loved the education that sunk in.
