Review: I am a professional mathematician with no prior training in music theory (I passed up high school band). After deciding that I wanted to teach myself the fundamentals of music theory, I purchased two books on the subject, just to benefit from complementary viewpoints. In very short order, I abandoned the second reference altogether and began relying exclusively on Pilhofer and Day's wonderful book.

Given my educational background, I approach all new subjects, including music theory, from a logical point of view. I need to understand WHY things are as they are before I can devote myself with any sort of enthusiasm to extensive memorization. Pilhofer and Day present music theory in a sequential, logical manner that gently develops cumulative understanding and minimizes delayed gratification. By the time I reached Part 2 on Major and minor scales, key signatures, intervals, chord progressions, etc., every piece of the puzzle began to fit into place. There is simply no way to avoid the considerable investment of time and energy that is required in this subject. However, accomplished mentors such as Pilhofer and Day can make the process a far more enjoyable learning experience.

If you are a complete novice in the field of music theory, looking for a book than can help you learn on your own, then this book will serve you well. I highly recommend it.

Title: excellent music theory book

Review: Like all the "dummies" books, the material is presented in an easy to understand format. And as the authors point out, each chapter is self contained as much as possible, so you don't have to go through the whole book starting with chapter one. I am however reading the book starting at the beginning as that makes sense for me. I am learning so much, even if I did originally buy it only to learn more about intervals. I'm just now ready to start chapter eight, and get into the Circle of Fifths, and I'm confident that I will understand it instead of being confused. One last comment is about the unexpected benefit of playing better because I now understand scales far better. I'll never be a performing musician, but at least I play better in my living room.

Review: I never had the opportunity to learn to play an instrument or piano as a child. in my mid sixties, I picked up first the ukulele then the Celtic harp. However, I felt I needed more than just how to use tabs and then basic music reading. This book provided a great foundation of music theory for a total novice. It was logically arranged and actually engaging to read. Glad I bought it.

Review: This is a 2019 publication - 323 pages, 7 1/2" x 9 1/2", soft bound. Print and topic headings easy to read. twenty chapters from (examples) chapter 1 What is music theory anyway, 2 Putting notes together, 10 Chord building, to 14 The building blocks of music Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, and song form. etc. I expect to wear this book out. I think this book would be a must for people interested in how music is put together. (probably not for youngsters)

I have played an instrument for 50 years, took private lessons in the beginning to learn technique, and needed this book to fill in gaps regarding theory - such as diminished and augmented notes, minor scales, etc.

Review: This music theory book is certainly very easy to read as compared with many other music theory books that are dry, hard to follow and hard to read. Except the theory, there are mentions of historical events that may be of interest to some. I recommend it to all beginner musicians.

Review: The addition of the Nashville notation system in this edition is a lot easier to grasp than the book referenced as the author's source. I have owned every edition of this book and, this time, I went for the Kindle version because of the portability, ease of use, and easily accessed personal notes (my old versions are decorated with sticky notes).

Title: A little oops regarding diminished seventh chords

Review: The photo on the left is on page 137. I want to draw your attention to Diminished = line.The photo on the right is page 140. On page 140, we are looking at the chord on the G clef. On page 137, if we use a C major scale, the flatted 7th is B flat. This is unfortunately consistent with quantity quality interval discussion, that it, quantity 7, lower a half step is diminished. Ok but…
Page 140 double flats the B. That sets up three minor thirds c e flat g flat b double flat. I think page 140 is correct. Maybe call page 137 C diminished flat the 7th.
I’m like the book, I’m not showing off here, I’ve struggled with this stuff like the rest of you, so I’m feeling that maybe this is a boo boo.
