Title: FABULOUS book. Showed me my strengths

Review: Wow!! This book WOWed me so that I had to stop, catch my breath and walk around in the middle of the night. Breathtaking! The idea that I do NOT have a deficiency... that ADD is part of my biggest GIFT.... and ways to understand how my brain actually WORKS... is profound.

I laughed in a lot of the parts when I saw myself reflected in my ability to measure time. LOL. I'm still laughing. And at the whirlwind on my desk (that is getting neater).... and walking into the kitchen noticing that the sink is nice and clean however that I left 2 drawers open and 5 cupboards... LOL. It's all okay. I am also devising ways to WORK with this amazing gift. I recommend this to ANYone who might have or know someone who has ADHD. PROFOUND work.

Title: THE MYTH OF A DISORDER

Review: People with ADHD are easily bored, easily distracted, restless, impulsive, and have great difficulty paying attention. But these traits are only a "disorder" in the modern world of sitting for hours listening to some teacher or speaker drone on for hours about tedious subjects.

These traits were highly adaptive in the hunter-gatherer world where they were necessary for a successful hunt. These then-adaptive traits centered around quick thinking and quick action. It was only when people were confined to classrooms and meeting rooms that these traits became a problem. As Hartmann points out things changed after the Agricultural Revolution when the farmer traits of patience and persistence became important. Now the plodding hunter who may have previously specialized in making tools or weapons became paramount.

Nevertheless today's hunter descendants can find jobs which appeal to their traits. A sales job with its need for quick responses is especially suited to these people. Hartmann seems hung up on a hunter type needing a farmer type as a backup sales partner for organization but there are countless jobs where a sale takes less than an hour and no help is needed.

One area where Hartmann goes off the rails is gender where he subscribes to the politically correct myth that men and women are basically the same in their traits. He understands that hunters and farmers are different genetic types but cannot see this in men and women. The job of a woman in a hunter-gatherer band was to keep house and watch the children or the species would not have survived. Needless to say this type was genetically selected just like the male hunter was genetically selected. These basic differences are still with us today.

Review: I've loved Thom Hartmann's books about ADHD, but the ones I've read are 15-20 years old. I was delighted to see that he had written a new one! Just to be sure it was really new, before ordering it I looked on Amazon's list of specifics about the book. Sure enough it said 2016. What I missed was that it was a third edition. When the book arrived, I saw that the title page states it was originally published in 1994, published under a new copyright in 2002, and now under a new copyright in 2016. Now that I have begun to read it, I'm finding that there is a small amount of new information about the DSM-V in the first chapter. As far as I can tell, the rest of the book is probably original. I don't see any references in the bibliography newer than the 1990's and some are from the 1970s and 1980s. This doesn't mean the information is not useful. It's just that I've read about his hunter/farmer theory elsewhere and thought I would be reading an updated presentation. I would appreciate it if Amazon would make it clear when a "new" book is really an old book in a new outer shell.
