Title: disappointed!

Review: Not an inspiring read. I am a fan of Yardeni for over 25 years, but there is an awful lot of ego and salesmanship in this book- trying to drive business to his analytical service. A lot of "see- I predicted this correctly and see...I predicted that correctly. I've read books by other accomplished economists who managed to recount economic history without all the self congratulating.
I find I am reading other things before pick up this book...disappointed!

Review: I have followed Ed Yardeni's writings since he was hired at E.F. Hutton in 1978. Among economists, he is one of the most future-focused. His predictions over the years have often been uncannily prescient. In addition, he also has a rare gift for talking about economics in language that non-economists like I am can readily grasp. His writings are not only educational to read, they are often captivating as well. Having said these things, I would not want anyone to think that this book is economics-lite. The book is dense with important insights that Yardeni has gleaned during his professional lifetime. Its 546 pages are best read slowly while pondering the many things that Yardeni has to teach. One may read the book straight through, but one may also dip into any of its sixteen chapters that may be of special interest to the reader. I believe that Predicting the Markets is destined to be a classic - one that I and other investors will keep on their library shelves and refer to many times over their investing lifetimes. Charts, more than prose, are Yardeni's principal medium for reading and predicting markets. The book is enhanced through the access that Yardeni grants to a huge on-line library of the charts that best illustrate the lessons he is teaching. Reading Yardeni will not give you a short and snappy formula for quick success in the markets - there is no such thing. It will give you a much deeper and fuller understanding of the dynamics that underlie the complex and ever changing world economy.

Title: Understanding context

Review: I read Yardeni's book very closely and referred to all the figures and appendices that he posted on-line. Early in the book Yardeni writes about his career, including the fact that he earned a PhD under Tobin, specializing in econometrics. He was disenchanted with econometrics, because of the difficulties in estimating relationships between variables, and the relationships were not stable over time. As he says in the last chapter, economics is not a science, because human behavior is mutable. Therefore economics cannot come up with laws, with relationships that are invariant. Therefore it is not a science, and econometrics does not help much in explaining macro-economic events, much less predicting them.

I can relate to this, because I got a PhD in quantitative economic geography at about the same time. That means I also did econometrics. I was slower than Yardeni in coming to the realization that econometrics had a huge problem. You couldn't reliably measure the parameters of the relationships, the relationships were not stable, and the dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models were simplified to the point of absurdity. Very important variables were left out of the model. The relationships are not stable because these important factors were left out. I came to realize that the unstable relationships occurred because of context. Something (or somethings) had changed the nature of the economic system, which changed the relationships between the variables.

Yardeni doesn't use the term context much, but the book is really all about context. History is very important. Oil price shocks in the past really mattered, and the economic models still exclude resource costs. They're very important to Yardeni's 'current analysis'. Debt levels and demographics are absent from the DSGE models. Yardeni thinks that they are critical to the outlook for future economic growth. I agree.

So this is an excellent book with a refreshing perspective. Yardeni was pretty optimistic about the stock market in the past, and still is in the future. He thinks the long-term future outlook for earnings growth is good, although business cycles will not go away, and so how the markets will do depends primarily on how investors value those expected earnings. He recognized that the earnings were over-valued prior to 2000, especially in the technology sector, and he saw that the financial sector was to be avoided in 2007, although he says he didn't foresee the depths of the overall market decline in 2008. But as he notes, it didn't matter, because the economy and stock prices recovered.

I've been pretty pessimistic about future earnings growth and the market's over-valuation for some time. Yardeni has convinced me not to worry. Recessions don't suddenly happen, and there are good reasons to accept that we will come out of them unlike Japan. He foresaw the increase in trade and economic globalization, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the admission of China to the WTO (context). This is unlikely to reverse.

The book reveals how he thought through the effects of contextual changes on currencies, inflation, earnings, interest rates, commodity prices, and therefore stock prices. It is an easy read. Enjoy, and take comfort in the future prospects for your investments.

Title: Great insights.

Review: This is a long book, over 600 pages. I would say that it has 3 components. 1 is a primer on economics. 2nd is a history of market and economic events that transpired over the author's career. The third, and to me the most interesting, is the author's views on what drives the markets and the economy. Yardeni argues, quite convincingly, that economics and market strategy are not understood thru mathematics and econometrics. They are determined by powerful trends and how literally billions of people respond to those trends. Over the course of his career, Yardeni has correctly identified technological innovation, globalization (which is not the dirty word some claim), and demographics as the key drivers of our times. He argues that the key to success as a forecaster and as an investor is to keep one's eyes on those trends and block out the other noise. I agree.

Review: I subscribe to Ed Yardeni's excellent daily updates and thoroughly enjoy his sane writing and thorough analysis. I was wondering what the book could add. Not to worry. It put everything together, between two covers. Yardeni’s book is a phenomenal resource for investors, not only a 40-year memoir of his work in the trenches of the market, but a guide to all the important indicators he follows, like an annotated encyclopedia of what they mean to us as investors. I hesitate to call it “the only book you need,” but it certainly ranks up there as one of the top guides you should use.

Review: as a long time Bache broker ,who was there when Ed came over in the early 80's I can personally and professionally vouch for this man.His book reads like he sounds both entertaining and incisive.Over the years he has made me more money than any other source, his interest rate projections has been spot-on.Any advice Pro who does'nt have this on his shelf, is to be suspect.
