Review: One of the biggest factors leading to films (both independent and studio features) going over budget is a lack of planning and an inability to stay on schedule - so it makes a lot of sense that this "panic free guide" would cover both scheduling and budget. That means that this book is primarily aimed at the production manager, or the person who is ultimately responsible for both scheduling and budgeting. On an independent shoot, however, where the lines between roles may not be as clearly drawn, it is important that all of the major players be on the same page, and understand the budget implications of taking another day to shoot or adding a new location at the last minute. For that reason, I think this guide would be extremely useful for all the key people (possibly including major investors who want to understand why things cost what they do) working on a film. Even writers would benefit from having some sense up front of what their scenes will actually cost, so that if they are writing a small independent feature they won't write in a scene that will cost more than the budget of the film.

This is a well-organized and highly readable guide to the entire process of planning the cost and schedule of a film shoot from script to screen. It all starts with the script breakdown - a careful look at the script to see what resources it calls for, what locations it requires, and how much time it will take to shoot. The companion website to this book includes a number of forms where the information for each scene can be catalogued, for ultimate transfer to an overall budget. After that, it's all about setting up a schedule for maximum efficiency; pricing out and negotiating costs for equipment, locations, and labor, and at the same time assessing what resources are available and what kinds of funding are likely to be attainable and making adjustments as necessary; and building a final budget and sticking to it, including planning for contingencies. The book includes a lot of helpful practical advice for first time and new production managers, and has some (limited) discussion of the differences between various types of production such as studio versus independent features, documentary, or television, shorts and education or corporate videos. As an amateur video enthusiast, and as a film instructor, I found it to be extremely useful, very well written, and containing a lot of information that is very likely to save a major production a lot more money than the cost of this book. Essential for producers and production managers, recommended for anyone who thinks they'd like to make a movie and has no idea what the costs would be.

Review: First, a qualifier - I have never created a film, and ultimately may or may not, but here are my thoughts after a tour through "Scheduling and Budgeting Your Film: A Panic-Free Guide".

I'm left sitting a bit overwhelmed, and terrified that one should undertake such a big endeavor, relying on this paperback manual as a key to success. So . . . realistically acknowledging that there will be other preparatory advice seek out and consider, I'll agree that a cruise through this book (with notepad at hand) is wise pre-planning. To date, I haven't read any other resources on this topic.

This manual covers much ground, from novice level to near-mastery. Heavily illustrated with tables, example forms, model plans/budgets, etc. Loaded with highlighted money and time saving tips. Not excessively given to jargon. I rarely had to research terminology used. There is a companion website provided - USE IT! Great resource. And highlight and/or take notes - this is in many ways a tutorial and technical guide, and there are points you will want to retain.

Early in your tour through this work, you'll be convinced that pre-planning (schedule and budget) will be a key to success. If you're not already a successful journeyman producer, this book is sure to help.

Review: This is a strong reference manual with a very thorough coverage of scheduling and budgeting a film that unfortunately suffers a bit from a case of trying to be everything to everyone -- beginning with information for someone who has never set foot on a movie set and ending with highly advanced elements for experienced UPMs and producers. When it gets into the end, it teaches enough material that a novice might erroneously believe they can and should budget a film without practicing and working up to key elements like negotiating with unions, dealing with fringe benefits and managing tax incentives.

The nuts and bolts of this book are useful, including ample examples and tables, but I wish it offered wisdom from working production managers or line producers. Also, I was surprised that a book published in 2012 didn't assume the reader was working with a computer. I would have preferred to have read an emphasis on the computer method, with just an appendix on the manual paper cut-out option.

Bottom line: This reference book is best when used by someone who is just starting to work into production management or line producing, in combination with a strong mentor. The book alone is not a complete education without the wisdom of a professional who has actually applied the principles to the real world of filmmaking.
