An authoritative, β€œmust-read” (Keith Hernandez) biography of Hall of Fame pitching legend Tom Seaver, still the greatest player ever to wear a Mets jersey, by a journalist who knew him well.

He was called Tom Terrific for a reason. Tom Seaver is β€œamong the greatest pitchers of all time” (Bob Costas). He is one of only two pitchers with 300 wins, 3,000 strikeouts, and an ERA under 3.00. He was a three-time Cy Young award winner, twelve-time All Star, and was elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame with the highest percentage ever at the time. Popular among players and fans, Seaver was fiercely competitive

Review: Seaver is the closest to a boyhood idol I had, and I loved the detail and insight in the book. Tom's pitching in the Field of Dreams now, and I know he's The Franchise there as well!

Title: I Believe This Biography on Tom Seaver Would Be the One to Buy
Date: Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on December 18, 2020
Review: Author Bill Madden came up with a gem of a book on New York Mets' icon Tom Seaver. I don't know what any other author could come up with anything better. I suppose other others could come up with a more detailed biography but this one told me as much as I'd want to know about Tom Seaver. Although he modeled the uniform of the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, and Boston Red Sox it obviously was the uni of the Mets that Tom will forever be identified with.

Seaver credits his father for working diligently with him as a youngster whereas his two favorite managers were, in order, Gil Hodges and Sparky Anderson. Tom had a great influence on pitcher Tom Hume who he introduced to museums, art, and other cultural items in cities the team visited on the road. Tom could be testy when roused such as when he first entered the Mets' new playpen, Citi Field, and saw the great display on Jackie Robinson in the rotunda to resemble Ebbets Field. He felt Robinson had no connection to the Mets and there appeared to be no recognition of him the franchise player on the team. What, no statue? I found this to be disappointing. Also, disappointing was Phil Rizzuto's damaged ego when he learned that the neophyte announcer Seaver was making the same amount of money on Yankee broadcasts as the veteran who had been with the team for many years.

Mets Chairman M. Donald Grant is portrayed as a villain in this book while Mets' Manager Yogi Berra comes out as not up to par as far as managers go even though he took the team to the World Series against the Oakland Athletics in the 1973 classic before losing in the seventh game. At times there appeared to be dissension on the team as the Tom and wife Nancy show seemed to garner a considerable amount of attention.

This book contains anecdotes involving players on all of the teams Seaver played with except the time he spent with the Red Sox. I did think the 1969 World Series contained more play-by-play than I would have liked. Tom Seaver, along with several other members of the Hall of Fame, passed away in the year 2020. Seaver suffered the after-effects of Lyme disease which decades later led to dementia and COVID-19 which eventually took his life. The book contains 16 pages of photographs.

I enjoyed the book and if anyone was to write a biography of Tom Seaver author Bill Madden would be the one to do it. Whatever other books that come out on Tom Seaver in the future I'm satisfied with this one. T

Title: Good, not great, and with awful mistakes
Date: Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on December 23, 2020
Review: April 2021 EDIT-Wow! All the five star reviews sure speak a lot to the mediocrity that society is inured to. Calling this a five star book is ludicrous. One could make a strained argument for four stars, but five? No chance. Endless errors (see below)-some really embarrassing-no index, etc. Read it for a decent, quick bio of Seaver with some outstanding elements (the interviews mostly which shed great detail on many events and people) but overall this is a thin product. It's not close to a five star work.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a lifetime Mets fan who grew up with Seaver (too young for 1969; 1973 was my formative year) he remains a top sports idol of mine. He WAS the franchise when I was a little kid. This bio is good, but far from great; it has the feel of a sportswriter putting something together quickly, in time for the holidays, from a great collection of interviews. It's interesting, relatively brief and a fast read, it can be informative and entertaining (the interviews are great; Seaver, his wife, daughters, lifelong friends, teammates from various eras, and a bunch of Hall of Famers), and it does give a lot of insight into Seaver the person as well as the player, but this is not the serious bio a figure of Seaver's stature deserves. Perhaps an unfair comparison, as Muhammad Ali was one of the world's most famous athletes, but Jonathan Eig's recent Ali bio is a classic example of a serious, incredibly researched bio of a transcendent sports figure. This is a quickly assembled and somewhat thin one; the lack of an index is perhaps the best sign of the lack of seriousness given this project.

The real problem is the awful editing; the author seems a little out of touch in his praise of editing in the acknowledgments. Some of it is cringe-worthy and embarrassing. It ranges from describing four runs scoring, then saying the Mets had a 3-run lead. Seaver pitched a 2-1 four-hit shutout (shutouts mean you gave up no runs). Any sports editor editing something from this era should know it is Denny McLain, and not McLane. Any sports editor at all should know that Chicago's legendary stadium is Soldier Field and not Soldier's Field. Frank Cashen was hired a Mets GM in 1980, and a couple of pages later we are told 1983 was his third year as GM. Trivial maybe, but all this makes one distrust the veracity of pretty much all cited facts not in quotes.

Well, actually, even some IN quotes. Reggie Jackson once said something that has become a famous baseball quote, that blind people came to the park to listen to Seaver pitch, as he threw so hard. Madden has Reggie saying they came to "watch" him pitch. Embarrassingly sloppy. The last one I will cite is really just plain ridiculous, and anyone who knows baseball knows how silly it is--Madden claims that Donn Clendenon, after being acquired by the Mets, drove in the go-ahead or winning run in each of his first 16 games. This is not just unlikely, it's impossibly ridiculous.

It's odd that Simon and Schuster could not do better than this with one of New York's greatest sports figures who was not just one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history, but had a long, varied, vibrant post-playing career as well. I get that 2020 has been a challenge for everyone, but Tom Seaver deserved better than this. My guess is that this level of mediocrity would have him pretty angry.

Again, a good, quick read with some great interview snippets, and a thoughtful look at the decline of Seaver's health, but more of a long article than a serious biography. A figure like Seaver deserves better than this level of writing, fact-checking, and editing. Here's hoping a much more serious author takes on Seaver's complex life and does it the justice it deserves.

Title: The best biography we are likely to have on Tom Seaver but not the definitive one he deserved
Date: Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on November 27, 2020
Review: Tom Seaver is one of the most underrated sports figures and personalities of all time. Bill Madden delivers a solid, if unspectacular work that captures some of the essentials of the man but not quite the essence. Its a vast improvement on past attempts - most notably the agenda driven hagiography of Steven Travers, which was a disservice to Seaver's legacy and complicated nature. This book is reconstruction of an aborted documentary that languished due to Seaver's declining health. Accordingly, many of the quotes are from 2016 or 2017, which was around the time efforts were being put into the documentary. What's really missing from this work is extensive research on contemporaneous reporting of Seaver's life and events. There is too much recall far after the events. There is also not enough assessments from the journeyman players. Many of the interviews seem to be conducted at the Hall of Fame Weekends. The book is historically accurate and balanced but too much at the surface. It was also rushed and provided no Index and a skimpy Bibliography. Unfortunately, too much time passed to give a great biography. This will have to do. I would also recommend that people seek out Marty Nobile's piece on Seaver that he wrote on Murray Chass' website in 2017, just before his passing.
