Title: Rigorously Scriptural and Liberating Examination of the Role of Women in Churcht

Review: This is an amazing book, as in life changing. Specifically written for those in the churches of Christ, it is engaging and personal and at the same time rigorously scriptural. Mr. Hicks is both gentle and urgent with his call to examine more closely the role of women in the assembly. Whether you are a woman like me who has wondered whether I was "born broken" because I never felt right in the "gentle and quiet" role, or you are trying to understand that trouble making sister who wants things shaken up from what you feel is the correct scriptural interpretation of two passages of scripture, this book can help. I would go so far as to say it is a must read for every member of the churches of Christ. If nothing else, the book emphasizes the importance of helping women recognize and use their spiritual gifts in some way for the benefit of the whole body, no matter what that gift is. If it's a gift that's only exercised by men in your congregation, you had better find a way even if it means inventing a way, or else the church will continue to lose its young women.

Title: A Genuine Perspective

Review: John Mark Hicks courageously explains his life-long wrestling with the complex subject of "Women Serving God." Using his hermeneutical lens of Jesus, the Christ and King of kings as he illumed in his first volume, "Searching for the Pattern," John Mark takes us through his multiple conversions of Kingdom vision. The gospels are about how God became king on earth as in heaven through Jesus Christ. Jesus demonstrates what life looks like when heaven and earth come together. John Mark takes the reader on a transformational journey of seeing how Paul cannot contradict Jesus' treatment of women throughout the gospels and His ministry. Moreover, the Kingdom of God is still defeating the powers, principalities, death, and tarnishment of the image of God based equally in both male and female image-bearers through the Church's evidencing of new creation. John Mark rightfully concludes that to silence women in the microcosm of heaven on earth, Church assemblies, is damaging to the public witness of the Church, and equivocal to silencing women for eternity in the new creation.

Review: John Mark Hicks has taken his theological biblical hermeneutic and applied it to women's participation in the church. His fair and humble treatment of 1 Timothy 2:8-15 is vitally important reading. He contextualizes the passage in terms of the culture of the times and its setting in Paul's letter. One may not agree with his conclusions but any conscientious Bible student must dialog with them.

Review: Dr. Hicks offers a gracious, honest, and thorough look at the topic of women serving and leading in the church. His reverence for the Lord and respect for the authority of Scripture is evident. While I may not agree with all of his points, I found this book incredibly helpful in unpacking the various arguments around the subject of women in ministry. I highly recommend this book.

Review: I appreciate the way the author acknowledges and honestly addresses his transitions through the years along the spectrum of views and approaches to this topic. The heart behind the words rings true and I find it engaging to listen to humble voices like this one.

As a fellow believer with a similar background, I understand the various positions and why God-fearing brothers and sisters land at different places on this.

This is an important and overdue work and resource. Someone needed to lay it out like this. Well done.

Review: This book is well written and John Mark Hicks is a good man. But the presentation is biased when presenting itself as objective. As one who is familiar with the background arguments, the egalitarian bias is clear in the references and technical arguments. We did an in-depth review of the book in various article at Renew.org.
