Review: I happened on this book quite by chance. I was on a North Atlantic cruise when a lady in a chair next to me heard me hoping out loud that I could find a copy of Nancy Brown’s The Real Valkyrie. Recently published, it is new scholarship on women warriors among the Vikings, and we had been having regular lectures about the Vikings on this trip. She said the book was in the ship’s library but when she went to look for it, it was in fact Secrets of the Sprakkar. Just dipping into it for a few pages I was hooked. I spent the last week of the cruise deep in this book, but then I had to look for my own copy.
I liked it enough to purchase it rather than borrow it from a library. It is written by Eliza Reid, the founder of The Iceland Writers’ Retreat and The Iceland Readers’ Retreat (held simultaneously). She also happens to be the “First Lady” (for lack of a better title) of Iceland, married to the President of Iceland.
The Sprakkar are extraordinary women in Iceland, past and present. She uses the term to profile women who have significantly moved Iceland toward the policies of equality and community support that exist there, though still emerging. Reid talks with these extraordinary women over coffee, over lunch, at events, even in the freezing cold waters of the North Atlantic (you’ll have to read it to find out who the Jellyfish are.)
In various chapters, Reid discusses topics such as women in business, women in governance, women entrepreneurs and women influencers. She talks about how childcare has freed parents, whether married or single, with a full year of leave after birth. She talks about how women have come to be elected in Iceland. Iceland produced the first freely elected female head of state a number of years ago. She talks about the immigrant experience for foreign-born women in Iceland. And many, many other topics, including media, education and sports.
I can’t recommend this book highly enough. I think it needs to be read by many people in my own country to help us try to more like Iceland in our policies, laws, and programs.

Reid paints on a wide canvas--politicians, farmers, student leaders, artists--and how they contend with issues of sexuality, equality, home life, child care and much more. An absorbing and fascinating book!

Review: The author, Eliza Reid, the First Lady of Iceland, is an incredible writer. This nonfiction account of strong women in Iceland and the country's strong support to achieve gender equity is so compelling that it is hard to put down. Her style drew me in to the point that I would love to meet her. Even if you have never been to Iceland (a Bucket List must do), you will appreciate the wonderful culture as Eliza Reid describes it.
