Review: White history is basically one of a privileged few exploiting the disenfranchised in order to control resources to feed the capitalist wealth-distilling machine. That theme was thoughtfully addressed in The Nutmeg’s Curse: Parables for a Planet in Crisis, by Amish Ghosh (2021).

The book focuses on the events on a tiny island that, unluckily for the inhabitants, was one of the sole producers of nutmeg — a spice that caused the world to go a little nuts in the 1600s. The Dutch East India Company wanted to corner the market and unleashed a wave of genocidal greed on the locals.

The author uses these events to explore larger themes of colonialism, Native American genocide, slavery, racism — all feeding into the slowly (and not so slowly) unfolding climate crisis of today. It’s a logical — even necessary — extension of the history of empire building.

“…capitalism was never endogenous to the West: Europe’s colonial conquests and the mass enslavement of Amerindians and Africans were essential to its formation. Nor was it based mainly on free labor—not even in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when many of the raw materials required by Western factories were produced by non-White workers under conditions of coercion, if not outright slavery.”

We have this ideal of hardy American settlers taming the continent with hard work and ingenuity, when in fact it was slave labor and native genocide — from disease, violence, poverty and environmental collapse of traditional resources — that built up the empire. Built all empires. And it’s the history of broken treaties that sustained the empire, at least in America.

“In the final analysis, it was the military and geopolitical dominance of the Western empires that made it possible for small minorities to exercise power over vast multitudes of people: over their bodies, their labor, their beliefs, and (not least) their environments.”

And those small minorities still hold the levers of power today.

A talented writer, the author sounds the alarm on climate change (an alarm too easily ignored by too many for too long) and muses on a different relationship we should aspire to in respect to the land, and each other. One that re-values life and happiness rather than resources and wealth. It’s a compelling and hopeful take, but, reading these three books in sequence, it’s hard not to think the engines of greed, now firmly entwined with white nationalist myths of what it means to be an American, will continue rolling over those who try to slow their feeding frenzy.

At least until there’s nothing left for any of us.

Review: Amitav has done a good job. Banda Island and Nutmeg will never be known till I read it. He covered the climate problems very well. He forgot to mention in India Earth is called "Dharti Mata" mother earth so does NZ Maori worship land. But he forgot to mention the impact of the Population" explosion on the universe. Can't believe my eyes when I see places I grew up in and revisit after a gap of 40 years. It is all crowded where we had Jungle and wild animals walking like dogs. No one has been mentioning this problem.

Review: I would recommend that people read this book and ponder it. But be prepared to read a book that feels much like the very well read but also lengthy and full of shifts conversation with a very provocative and thoughtful colleague. One who reads diversely and widely, who has traveled far and wide, who has had many insights but may also have at times read some slightly questionable sources. But mostly one who is a skilled story teller and does get back around to points they were making, but it may take a few hours or a few 100 pages before they finally circle back.

It reminds me, perhaps not surpassingly of the best conversations I had with friends at the University of Chicago - long conversations that might touch on a multitude of disciplines and books and sources and which all participating in the discourse were treating seriously and were more often than not all familiar with even some of the most obscure of sources. And if not familiar, were taking notes to look up books and articles and films etc.

So four stars because while thought provoking and important some of the diversions didn’t work as well as others for me - and there were a few that were a bit head scratching (an off handed and not mentioned again claim of aliens but that’s not the only one).

So a book to read and engage with - just don’t expect it to be straightforward history it’s something else. Not fiction, not precisely just a personal memoir, but also very much an artifact of this very specific moment in time. As the pandemic continues to rage onward I suspect this book will also increasingly be hard to separate from the precise moment in time when it was written and published - in the midst of this pandemic.

Review: A very dense, immersive, and relevant book. Ghosh describes thru the arc of history from the micro (experience of Dutch colonists on the Bantu Islands in Indonesia) to the macro (climate change) about the mechanistic view of exploiting the earth’s resources.

The history from a settler colonial perspective: in the Americas, paralleled with the colonization of the Bantu Islands. Native lands and people, nutmeg - all for the colonists to take control over, and subjugate the local population.

What really rises as an important concept is place as an agent of change. Place matters. People who understand a place matter. His call to reclaim these voices of place, landscape, and try to overcome the forces that are destroying the planet. A little glimmer of hope.

Review: This was one of my required texts for class this semester. While it’s not exactly something I would reread, if you want to learn about the climate crisis but scientific articles confuse you and the news heightens your sense of impending doom, this might be the book for you. Ghosh speaks to the anthropological and historical background of earth’s environmental crisis through narrative, linking historical events to the modern day. And his ultimate proposal for repairing the damage might not be as radical as you think.
