Students will be confused when the authors speak of "simple" bacteria and "complex" mammals (Figure 1-1). My students are taught that 'if it's living, it's complex' (e.g. 'Bacterial osmoregulation' by Wood. Ann. Rev of Microbiology v 65).
I did a study of mutations in this text and came up with no 'beneficial mutations' (oxymoron?). None (although I may have missed them). They will also be confused when they read in bold type on p. 243 that 'mobile DNA elements have significantly influenced evolution' Really? The authors go on to describe 'mutant alleles associated with several human genetic diseases'! Ensuing paragraphs are rife with, "may have" "could lead" "most likely" "Some evidence suggests" "exon shuffling, may have"
Making a case for upward onward evolution via mutations is like trying to balance the budget by raising taxes.
If you get this text be ready to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Review: We had never rented textbooks online, so we were a little hesitant to do so. To our surprise, it was so easy! We had plenty of time to return the book with free postage. Review: I personally got burned because I am a doctor and work day to day in my office does not actually use the book a lot. Consult it possibly more for personal enjoyment than to resolve doubts. But that will take a course of, say, six months specifically about molecular biology think this is a great book.

Title: What a conundrum

Review: The book arrived as expected in excellent condition. Now the hard part is loving the class and learning the material. I give Amazon five stars for the much better price then what my book store offered. Highly recommend for any other students who must take Cell class and use this book.
