Title: Bits and pieces of a life

Review: This is a quick and easy, but puzzling read. A more accurate title might have been "Bits and pieces of a life". It was largely about Cummings' life as it related to the women in it, with very little about his wider orbit of friends. This was brought home when Cheever wrote about the funeral of a dear friend of Cummings that left him distraught, but in checking back on the name, he had only appeared early in the book in a long list of people Cummings hung out with in Greenwich Village. Judging from this book, Cummings was a self-centered artist who did not mature or mellow as he aged, but I had to wonder if I was reading the book Cheever thought she was writing, because she clearly thought highly of him as a person and a poet. For example, Cheever only glancingly acknowledges that his pride in his hardscrabble artist's life seems rather less impressive given that he often turned to his mother for cash when he was hard up. I'm not sorry I read it, but I'm certain there is a better Cummings biography out there.

Title: A great read about a complicated man & the events that shaped his poetry!

Review: I recently read the biography of Edna St Vincent Millay, also from Amazon, titled Savage Beauty. If you are interested in poetry, understanding the individual is essential & that read was a home run. I’ve since purchased Edna’s collected lyrics & sonnets. Following suit, I came across this title, E.E Cummings, “A Life” this past April at City Lights Bookstore in North Beach, SF. I decided to purchase the book on Amazon, and like Savage Beauty, it was a great read, offering tremendous insights into the mind of this great modernist poet, an introduction to his extensive body of work, as well as a thorough diagnosis of his poetic form, the liberties he took with grammar & the employment of concrete images & sounds which E.E. Cummings used to great effect. If you like the work of Ezra Pound, the founder of the literary movement, Imagism, you’ll love E.E. Cummings. Cummings also wrote plays & two autobiographical accounts of his exploits in Europe, including his time in France during WWI in which he was incarcerated, The Enormous Room & his trip to Russia, where his exposure to Bolshevism changed his political leanings in contrast to many of his left-leaning colleagues.....

Review: I've been a fan of ee.cummings since I was a senior in high school. He wasn't on our curriculum but I discovered him nevertheless. I knew almost nothing about him all those years until now. This "life" is told by Susan Cheever who knew him when she was young. His weaknesses and his playful nature and depressions offer insight into the whys of his poetry. Cummings lived a comfortable life in Massachusetts living with his parents well into his college years. Cummings only moved out when he ceased being the "good boy" to the rebellious adult. The disappointments in his life, however did not crush his playful nature. Much more is told in this Life that reveals the man who created such lines as " ( exists no miracle

to feel)

Title: his poems are noy easy to understand

Review: EE Cummings, a brillant and gifted poet and artist. A son of a Harvard professor who rejected the comforts of an upper middle class family to live a near poverty and bohemian life in Grenich Village with frequent periods in Paris. However, Cummings remained financially dependent on financial support from his mother throughout his life. He also was a man who struggled to maintain romantic relationships while blessed with the ability to attract female interest. This book details both his professional and personal lives and makes for a fascinating read. The book contains ample selections of his poems, Note, his poems are noy easy to understand.

Title: Some biographies are ponderous...not this one

Review: More like 4 1/2 stars. This biography begins with a recap of Cummings' first "nonlecture" at Harvard and proceeds to give us a tidy, but thorough, look at a complex, brilliant man. Through her father, the novelist John Cheever, the author had the opportunity to meet Cummings and the positive impact was significant. Still, she's able to objectively and concisely (less than 200 pages) evaluate the life and work of the man. It is the immediacy of Cummings' relationships (parents, wives, child, friends and critics) that formed him and Cheever concentrates on that; so many biographies tend to fill space with expansive and irrelevant expositions on a family backround that veers from the subject at hand.

Review: Can't say much more than the headline. Cummings by Cheever (even if he was her father's friend and she was just a child at the time) delivered quickly, well packaged and in perfect condition. Enjoy.

Title: Shallow. Pedestrian.

Review: This is a shallow account of a life (and talent) much deeper than the biographer's crudely Freudian approach (Cummings' towering, hectoring father) could possibly fathom.
Its pedestrian style does not elevate its content either.
The hype and attention it has received baffle me.

Title: Fast Read Introduction to E. E. Cummings

Review: Quick moving biography of E. E. Cummings, clearly greatly admired by the writer. Not nearly as detailed as the biogrphies of Cummings by Robert Kennedy and Christopher Sawyer-Laucanno, particularly in regard to discussions of poetic techniques, yet providing faithful overviews of what made Cummings an appealing poet. A good, faster-read introduction to E. E. Cummings.
