Title: Definitely Battle Born

Review: I just finished 96 Miles! It was so good. Harrowing, engaging, thoughtful, dangerous and empowering! As a fellow Nevadan, I looove the Battle Born theme. These kids were seriously hard core through some difficult circumstances.
John is a kid who doesn’t always make good choices, but his whole goal is to get his brother to safety during a dangerous time. I like how Esplin doesn’t reveal the reason behind Stew’s frustrating behavior until almost the end. Then it all falls together to make sense. His mood swings and depression come so clear.
The setting and situation really resonate with this crazy time we’re in. I definitely want to be like the Lockwoods!
Each of the other characters were great as well, even that Presley dude who ended up being deeper than I imagined.
Such an amazing story that kept me invested and interested the whole way through. Great job!

Review: This is by far one of the best books out there for tweens/teens reading or read aloud.
There is such limited current day "great" reading for this age group but this was one of those books that are a keeper and will hold a special place on the bookshelf.
We had just gotten this book and my 19-yr old voracious reader son who can't stand the dribble that's out there for his age group, got hold of it before anyone else. He devoured it in 1 day! He couldn't put it down. When finished, he exclaimed, "Now, that was a GREAT book!" My 15-yr old son hogged it next. He wouldn't let it down for a second. After finished, he echoed the same praise. He said he loved it. Now my 17-yr old son has drifted off to storyland. He is halfway through at this point. I'm impatiently waiting my turn.
Thank you, thank you J.L. Esplin for this splendid, quirky, thought-provoking read. Keep writing!

Title: My Kids Relate

Review: My fourteen-year-old daughter and I read 96 miles and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. This middle grade book is nicely paced throughout. It would make a great read-aloud with humor, suspense, and surprise for kids to enjoy (I plan on reading it to my own elementary aged kiddos).

I love how Esplin kept me guessing and slipped in an unsuspecting twist that changed the way I viewed the characters and plot. Also, we are Nevada born and raised and Esplin did a fabulous job hitting the ‘state pride spot’ for us.

Home means Nevada!

**SPOILER ALERT**

Don’t read on if you don’t want it spoiled for you. Spoilers below. I’m including this to help those who might have disbelief in Esplin’s portrayal of one of her characters.

My daughter and I both could relate to the main character and his brother because my daughter is a type 1 diabetic. After she read the surprising twist, she came to me saying, “Mom, I know how he feels.” That reaction alone was so worth the read!

As far as diabetic symptoms that one of her characters suffers from, every child and person can and may experience their symptoms differently but in a general sense Esplin is accurate in her portrayal. Hence, my daughter’s reaction written above.

Title: Been there, done that

Review: This book was scary because I can imagine the scenario. We, too, live in Idaho, my son lives in Las Vegas, and we have driven route 318 many times. I even stopped at the post office in Lund one time to mail a pair of sunglasses back to my son when I discovered that he left them in my car. This book is a good reminder of the importance of being prepared, which is why I wanted to read it. This past year we have all experienced what it is like to run out of things and not be able to get more. Use that as a wake up call to prepare while you can.

Review: What a great book. JL Esplin is a very talented new author.

96 Miles is thoroughly entertaining, suspenseful, funny and thought provoking. This is a wonderful book for reading together as a family. I believe young readers will have questions to ask their parents as they put themselves in the shoes of the main characters. Preparedness, survival, patience, and brotherly love are the main themes of this well developed story. It will leave you in suspense until the end when you discover the reason for the determination and sacrifice of one brother for another. It is deeply touching and leaves one wondering, “How far would I go for someone I loved?” 96 miles?

Review: I had my students read this book for our “book club” and my children listened to the audio book through Audible. It was such a great book. All of my students enjoyed reading it and my own kids loved it. Even as an adult, I really enjoyed the book. I found it to be entertaining and suspenseful. Of all of the books I have read to students this year, this has been the one that as a group they reported to enjoy most. The reader of the audio version was fantastic also. I highly recommend for your middle school kids.
