Review: I first read this book in high school (totally not appropriate for teens fyi). Retrospectively, I remembered it being such a great book. After reading it again some 10-15 years after the fact, I found it to be incredibly redundant and obnoxious. I'm not a fan of the ghetto-fab writing style. Just because you're a black writer, that doesn't mean it's not okay to write eloquently. Most importantly... there's so much that just doesn't make any sense. SPOILER: For example, Zoe becoming a successful entrepreneur. She's not a photographer. She isn't a good businesswoman at all. Not that the novel takes much time to explain this in the first place, but it undermines itself by implying that she is despite the "professional" interactions in the book actually being very unprofessional and unrealistic. If you've taken even a single course in psychology, you'll find any scene involving counseling or Zoe getting to the bottom of her addiction to be incredibly laughable, impractical and entirely chimerical. It's also just not very well-written at all as far as grammar. What the author does well, however, is tell a story. The characters develop. You care about them. You want to keep reading. This book never had a chance at winning a prestigious literary award, but it's a fun read. Good for passing a weekend with if you're in the mood for soap-opery drama. I put it in the same category as something like... Flowers In The Attic (except those books are actually a tad better). Trash. But the good type of trash. ????โ€โ™€๏ธ

Review: Wow, where do I start? This book was way more than I thought it would be.Zoe and James have been childhood sweethearts, now they are married with children. Zoe has always felt different, always need more. She has the perfect life, the most loving and caring husband, onto of that sexy. But there is something missing. He's not giving Zoe what she needs in the bedroom. Needing that itch scrathedm Zoe will venture into a world she would have never thought she would enter. Cheating on her husband... But not with one, or even two, but three people. They each give her something she is needing. Finally going for help, she spills her all to her therapist. But want once was fun, is now tearing her apart. Zoe is a sex addict, but why? How did this all come about? When everything starts crumbling around her and her secrets arent secrets no more, can James and Zoe keep their marriage going. Can James finally give his wife what she is seeking in their bedroom. This is the first book I've read by an Afracian-America author. As well as a book that all the main characters are the same race. This book was pronominal. It keeps you engaged, keeps you turing the page. And finally saying "I didn't see that coming." An absolutely amazing read.

Review: O M G โ€ฆso I initially heard about Addicted from a fellow blogger but I didnโ€™t know too much about it and really didnโ€™t give it much thought. And then I happened to stumble upon the trailer for the movie (releasing on October 10th ) and I was sold! My interest was immediately piqued and I was determined to read the book before seeing the movie. What I loved most about this book is the way itโ€™s written. I greatly appreciate โ€œreal talkโ€, meaning characters who talk like your average person, slang and all. It makes them easier to relate to and the story just flows better because itโ€™s almost like youโ€™re talking to or listening to a friend. Thatโ€™s one of the reasons I was able to finish it in a day, well that and because I literally couldnโ€™t put it down. While I typically donโ€™t go for books that involve cheating or love triangles I couldnโ€™t resist this one. We always hear about male characters or even male celebs in real life being sex addicts, but we never really hear the story from a female addictโ€™s perspective. Some people might say, โ€œI donโ€™t care what she has to say about it, cheating is cheatingโ€, but itโ€™s really not, at least not in this situation. Zane does an amazing job of portraying Zoe and Jasonโ€™s relationship from the moment they first met until their current predicament. She basically lays out the foundation showing their ups and downs and mixed emotions, so we know without a shadow of a doubt that Zoe is in fact madly in love with her husband. Sheโ€™s just sick and needs help.I canโ€™t help but place some of the blame on Jason. Zoe reaches out to him every chance she gets, trying to initiate both sex and conversation, and he turns her down every single time. On the rare occasions they actually do have sex itโ€™s bland and boring and Zoe is always left unsatisfied. Itโ€™s not that she doesnโ€™t desire her husband or that she finds him unattractive. Itโ€™s the complete opposite, she comments on his good looks and amazing personality all the time. The problem is that heโ€™s just not worried about her needs and wants, only his own, and thatโ€™s not enough for her. Coupled with the addiction, it just leads to numerous bad decisions on Zoeโ€™s part. The amount of drama, romance, suspense and over all craziness packed into this novel was insane, in a good way. I was literally on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book, hence the reason I finished it in a day. All of the plot twists really did catch me by surprise, especially the ending. Zane does an amazing job of weaving an intricately detailed story of lies and deception and spinning it into an absolutely gripping unputdownable (totally making that a word) novel. My coworkers and I did a group reading of this book, even though we all finished at different times, and we all agreed that it was sexy, shocking and seriously intense. And weโ€™ll all be seeing the movie together :)As much as I loved this book I do have a couple of issues. My main issue being a little something I like to call inappropriate use of exclamation points. In my opinion exclamation points are used to express excitement or anger and should always be used in the proper context. That wasnโ€™t the case here; exclamation points were used at the most awkward times when neither of the aforementioned emotions was present. Now this might not bother you in the slightest but for me it interfered with my reading because in my mind Iโ€™m picturing the characters responding a certain way and the exclamation points just donโ€™t coincide with whatโ€™s being said or the tone of the scene. My other issue is that certain plot points seemed unbelievable. To give an example I have to include a SPOILER so consider this your warning. When Zoe is in the hospital from her accident she awakes to her husband and her therapist in the room. The therapist then proceeds to tell Zoe how she already informed Jason of EVERYTHING that had happened with Zoe and her affairs. Umm, Iโ€™m sorry but is a doctor supposed to do that?? What about the whole doctor-patient confidentiality thing?? I mean I felt like Zoeโ€™s therapist was way underqualified to help her anyway and shouldโ€™ve referred her to another doctor who specialized in Zoeโ€™s type of addiction but thatโ€™s another issue entirely. Maybe she was supposed to be like that, who knows. This was my first experience reading a book by Zane but definitely not my last. I canโ€™t wait to see what else she has to offer. Oh and if you couldnโ€™t tell I DEFINITELY recommend this one ;)
