Title: A lot of heartfelt Short Stories

Review: I don't know if this was intended as short stories. It starts out as individual chapters describing the life of each one who travels on the lilac minibus from Dublin to their hometown on the weekends and back. It has authenticity, and some stories break your heart. There does seem to be a bent on the selfishness and insensitivity of some people, and a lot of female victims.

At one point I kept thinking, "Change, change. Think of someone besides yourself for a change". There are one or two souls who are good through and through, but they seem to be carrying the burden of others.

A plot was missing here, but the descriptions were interesting enough.

Review: The Lilac Bus, in this edition, is really a novel by that name and also an added set of four distinct, independent short stories.

The novel The Lilac Bus is complex and simple at the same time, full of ordinary life expressed in an extraordinarily gifted and natural way. Each chapter of the novel is the story of one of the weekly passengers in the Lilac Bus of the title, who happen to travel together to and from their hometown in-between their workweeks in Dublin. They are more acquaintances than close friends now that they work in a major city, people who each work in different fields and come from different types of financial and family backgrounds. But as a group their stories paint a masterful portrait of the complex years between leaving school and finishing with the world of paid work.

The four stories printed after the Lilac Bus are entirely independent of it and each other, each one a satisfying and unique read! Fortunately, the style of the novel and the independence of each short story means the reader does can spread the banquet out, and take time to relish their pleasures!

A wiser reader than I am, would take a good break after the novel, which is presented as eight chapters about eight fascinating people from one small Irish town.

I had less restraint, I'm afraid! In spite of that, I enjoyed the short stories greatly. The last story was a masterpiece, and its placement at the end of the volume was perfect, because the reader is left totally immersed in the strong character and dramatic moment with which it ends. Even knowing that life is never as certain as we feel it is to turn out the way things look, we have also all felt at times we knew it all, and only we could find a way forward, in spite of everything!

20 years after the stories first appeared, I wish we could ask Maeve Binchy to write us an update on her wonderful characters' lives from 20 to 30 years later, and get to spend some time with them again. Unfortunately, we can't.

She is greatly missed.

Review: What the heck?? That is the question I am left with after reading this book. This book is a collection of short stories, mostly about a group of people who commute home on a Lilac-colored Bus (hence the title) every weekend from Dublin to a small town in Western Ireland. The group is the usual assortment of Binchy characters, set in the 1980's Ireland, and I was drawn in to their lives and interested in seeing how everything would tie up together and then, BAM - the lilac bus and its riders disappear from any mention in the book, and we get a few unrelated short stories and then the book ends. It didn't make for a very smooth reading experience. I am a Binchy fan and would classify her novels as "comfort reading." Her writing style is cozy and charming, and I love the Irish settings and her writing style. Not the deepest or most difficult reading material, but engaging and well-written. Her books, from oldest to newest, kind of capture the huge social changes in Irelend from the 50's to modern times. I have read many of her works multiple times, but there are a few titles I have been reluctant to try based on the reviews. This was one of them, and I can see why the reviews were kind of meh. The stories are alright on their own, but seem a bit rushed and lack the usual polish. Endings are not Binchy's strength, and in this book there really is no ending, just a bunch of incomplete vignettes. Oh well, It was ok but I would not recommend this book for someone just getting into Maeve Binchy.

Title: I hate this book!

Review: Well, not really. My copy also has Dublin 4 in it which I've only read a little of but I find it aggravating because the stories don't end they just stop. Maeve is a wonderful writer & you really care about the characters but it drives me crazy when you are left hanging. I wish I had read the reviews before I bought this & I would have passed it by. I've read about 10 of her books & am totally addicted so it didn't occur to me that I wouldn't like this. I loved Light A Penny Candle but I wish it had continued on just a couple more months & that it had come to more of a conclusion. I felt like it was cut just a little too short but these are stopped way ahead of that point! At least in that you had some idea & could make up the rest to suit you but these are a different story. Just as they get to the good part they're over. I find it really annoying & frustrating but they leave you wanting more, that's for sure! The Glass Lake & Whitethorn Woods are my favorites followed by Tara Road, Circle of Friends, Light A Penny Candle, Nights of Stars & Rain (or something like that) & Echoes, which is similar to Circle of Friends in that it's about college kids but different people, relationships, & problems. I don't like to be frustrated when I read & I like things to come to some kind of conclusion not an abrupt end up in the air.

Title: Different , strong characters

Review: This book was a little different. I am a fan of Maeve Binchy but not so much of this book. It starts out telling the story of the people that ride the Lilac Bus. They are very interesting characters but then it kinda goes astray and tells the stories of what seem to be random people. Each in itself is good but together, with no end for any segment, a little strange. But I'm a fan of Maeve Binchy.
