Review: I read the last 200 pages of this book on the day my state got really serious about the coronavirus. It took me out of my constricted world and deep into the Deacon’s incredibly rich world. If I could trust my aging memory better, I would say that this is the best book I have ever read.

Review: I will not recount the plot of this book because most reviews have already done so. This book is a bittersweet elegy celebrating a New York and time that no longer exists. It is filled with humor, sadness and social commentary.The story finds its footing early and moves along well, becoming increasingly engrossing as it progressed. A man has just walked on the moon, Woodstock has rewritten music history, and the New York Mets are about to win the World Series. But for the residents of Cause Houses, a housing project near the abandoned docks of Brooklyn, the changes are of a much more threatening nature. The amount of drugs in their midst, with the attendant participation of organized crime, has recently exploded, replacing the more petty forms of graft and corruption the neighborhood has tolerated for decades. So, when an elderly drunk known to all as Sportcoat shoots a young drug dealer who he used to coach in baseball and teach in Sunday School, it sets in motion a dizzying array of actions and events, the repercussions of which permanently transform the lives of those living around Cause and the Five Ends Baptist church.In Deacon King Kong, James McBride weaves this amazing story with all the humor, wisdom, and panache that anyone who has read his equally engaging The Good Lord Bird would expect. Taking off from Sportcoat’s singular act of defiance—which he was too drunk on King Kong, his homebrewed libation of choice, to even remember—the author expands rapidly to describe the many likely and unlikely ties that bind together the people belonging to this multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-religion, and multi-generational community. And, to be sure, this tale is nothing if not a celebration of community, taking both the blessings and the warts in the balance. The people of Cause Houses cannot survive without each other—although they certainly would like to try from time to time—and McBride brings out the essential humanity of the collective lives they lead and the secrets they keep for one another.I really liked this book, which was a moving and satisfying reading experience from beginning to end. With Sportcoat (aka Deacon King Kong, for his two most prominent passions), the author has created an unforgettable protagonist for the ages. In fact, McBride does a wonderful job fleshing out all of the many, many characters—Hot Sausage, Sister Gee, The Elephant, Deems, Hettie, and Officer Potts, to name but a very few—that populate this sprawling patchwork of a story. This is a novel that is frequently funny, sometimes grim, occasionally thoughtful and philosophical, but never dull. Above all else, it is a deeply compassionate look at a group of people who never lose faith in themselves or each other, despite facing some very long odds. I can recommend this book without the slightest hesitation.

Review: I actually quit reading this book after about 30% as I was just so bored with it. Even though it had given me a few laughs, it just wasn’t going anywhere. I even wrote a review in this space expressing my disappointment.A couple of readers reacting to my review strongly encouraged me to keep going, as they thought the same thing too early on, but finally found it great after reading the whole thing. So I gave it a few weeks (and read a few more books) and decided to give it another try.And I am glad I did! Very clever plot lines and interesting characters. Very funny in parts, also quite poignant in parts.So I recommend you try it, and keep going if you think it’s not going anywhere for a while!

Review: I was excited to read a book by such an accomplished award winning writer. I was disappointed in the disjointed, fragmented and tangential organization of the novel. Each chapter does not feed itself to the next, its as if they stand alone as short stories forced to be in the same book because the characters are related. Very taxing and tedious to read and make some sense of what is happening on the page. There are many moments where the author rambles on and on, with a series of over 15 commas in a single sentence you feel will never end.He also does a major disservice to minority groups by presenting them with highly stereotypical language and features (for example African American neighborhood gossip girl named "BumBum") and a man nicknamed "Hatian sensation" with his voodoo dolls.He also creates a world where all women are victims of circumstance and born to experience pain and displeasure with life (just by virtue of their sex). Its difficult to pretend that all women are miserable and men are here to save them.The patterns of misogyny and inflated racial tension are indebted in the book. We are supposed to forgive the author because he himself is biracial, but appears solely "Black" and grew up in the projects . The racial stereotypes serve to give the audience cheap laughs, yet the question is who is he writing for? Instead these stereotypes produce anger for readers of these races as they are exaggerations and arbitrary at best.You imagine there will be an enlightening ending worthy of your time and effort navigating through torturous prose, but are left destroyed on your couch reaching for whiskey. It is not a moment of defeat yet of victory for you never have to read from this book again!

Review: I loved this book. The settings and characters in the book are people I'll never meet and places I'll never go, but James McBride made them real for me. I learned a lot, and I was entertained. What else can you ask for?
