It all starts to go wrong at the shooting gallery. Emery Hazard and his boyfriend, John-Henry Somerset, just want to enjoy the day at the Dore County Independence Fair. At the shooting gallery, though, Hazard comes face to face with one of his old bullies: Mikey Grames. Even as a drugged-out wreck, Mikey is a reminder of all the ugliness in Hazardโ€™s past. Worse, Mikey seems to know something Hazard doesnโ€™tโ€”something about the fresh tension brewing in town.

When the Chief of Police interrupts Hazardโ€™s day at the fair, she has a strange request. She doesnโ€™t want Hazard and Somers to solve a murder. She wants them to

Criminal Past (Hazard and Somerset Book 6) by Gregory Ashe Book Review

Title: When bad things happen to queer people: story focusses too much on sadistic torture.
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2018
Review: Gregory Ashe is very successful at making me like, care deeply about and even love Emery and Somers. That is an accomplishment. I've read the previous 5 in this series and retain all the backstory which was revealed so far. I looked forward to the new installment BUT I strongly disliked and speed-skimmed to avoid large swathes of the narrative due to the overdose of sadistic torture, violence, bullying and intense physical suffering. EG the bully entering his injured quarry's hospital room. The victim has a serious road-burn facial injuries plus severe concussion. Bully locks them inside and then violently punches him about the head and face over and over. Each blow causing massive pain, and bleeding of the face, including puncturing the cheek.

That same night he captures the injured man, ties him to a chair and beats him, then knifes and razors his skin, forces him to drink urine, to eat yellow phlegm the bully's coughed up, cut him with a drill. Chapter 36 begins: The tip of the pliers slipped deeper under (victim's) fingernail. Then with a twist the nail popped free. (this happens to all the fingernails) In order to get finish the book, I had to simply skip chapters of unending torture. And this didn't just apply to the man above. Flashbacks of a victim, and bragging by different bullies describe beatings, knife cuttings, gang rapes, sexual trafficking, betrayals of the weak when they are in need, etc.

Too much of the story was physically impossible. EG, the captive mentioned above is suddenly free after extensive torture, beating, being shot, all this 1 day after serious concussion...nevertheless he can climb a ladder, then climb from a 2nd floor window to look for something on the house's roof. Healthy people are not normally that strong and agile, but for someone who's been tortured and beaten to this level, it is impossible-- unless he's Superman.

Police and city governmental corruption is so extensive as to also be unbelievable. Can 1/4 of the cops in town really be murderous, on the take and involved in crime themselves? Would good cops in charge of the station really sit back and let this happen, when they know very well what is going on?

My request of the author for his next novel in the series is to avoid gruesome violence, avoid repeated flashback description of how the protagonist was severely tortured by classmates, make your world more believable and less disgusting to read. These 2 protagonists are beautiful people whose love and lives are worth showing to the world. Please don't fill the story with ugly and to my mind unnecessary horror.

Title: engaging, gruesome, not his best

Review: I have enjoyed the books in this series. I like Hazard and Somerset as characters. All characters in this series are interesting, the author knows how to develop characters while also keeping the action going. I didn't like this book as much as the previous books. First, Mikey Grames was in my mind being portrayed as a broken down crackhead in previous books. So how did he suddenly become so lethal in this book? He repeatedly owned two macho super cops who made boneheaded, emotional decisions, and were both outsmarted and overpowered by Grames. At every turn. Even the resolution with Mikey seemed more luck than skill. Disappointing. The extensive kidnapping torture scenes were over the top. If I wasn't a fan of this series, I would have stopped reading. Just way too much. The end was also disappointing. Assuming there is another book in the series, I hope the author does not rhapsodize about how good Hazard looks in an apron. Also, a small issue. But the author has this habit of writing back and forth conversations that go on for pages, with no breaks for "Hazard said..." or a reflection on how one of the characters is reacting to something that was said. As a result, there were times when I had to page back to try and figure out who started the conversation, so I could keep on track with which character was speaking. Come on, this is writing 101.

Title: Dark, intense and at times frustrating addition to a dark, intense and at times frustrating series.

Review: Wow, Criminal Past was...intense.

The 6th book in the Hazard and Somerset series is absolutely not the one to start with. The author has said this is the end of the first โ€œarcโ€ for these two characters (although not the end of the series) and it reads like it - bringing back old characters and wrapping up old mysteries (including at least one we already thought was resolved.) Expect resolution to several dangling threads from the series and a lot more pain (physical and mental) for our MCs, Emery and John-Henry.

The plot in this entry was high octane, full pedal-to-the-metal, and deeply disturbing - like most of the books in the series. An encounter with old antagonist Mikey Grames during a family outing to the county fair and an unwelcome case involving the townโ€™s shadowy power-player mayor, Sherman Newton, kick things off, and saying too much more would ruin the various plot twists - which are numerous and labyrinthine, as always. Criminal Past is significantly longer than the last few books in the series and Iโ€™m not sure it really makes good use of the extra page count. Our MCs are apart for a big chunk of the last part of the book as tensions ratchet higher and higher and higher and higher, but thereโ€™s only so long you can sustain that before it starts to feel exhausting rather than exciting as a reader. Also, serious content warnings for graphic descriptions of on-page torture and sexual abuse of minors, as well as graphic descriptions of injuries and lots of f-slurs (not a surprise if youโ€™ve read the other books, but worth mentioning nonetheless).

I struggle a lot with how I feel about this series. I like the mysteries and some aspects of the characters, but I am primarily a relationship reader, and Hazard and Somers can just be so mean to each other sometimes - like really destructive - itโ€™s hard to get past at times. The first book was a gripping angst fest that hooked me, the next few felt like the two MCs were emotionally treading water, or running over and over the same ground in torturous and frustrating ways. Things clicked back into place once the will-they-wonโ€™t-they finally resolved in book 4. I was glad to find the Hazard and Somerset relationship advancing in the last book and this one continued that pattern, overall, but also took some large steps back. A lot of this book revolves around how to get past โ€œthe pastโ€ and I want to believe these two can do that now.

It might sound like I disliked this book, but I didnโ€™t really; it was a riveting read for the most part - I downed it all in one night. If youโ€™ve been reading the series you absolutely wonโ€™t want to miss this installment, which kicks every plot and relationship aspect of the previous books up to about a 15 out of 10. The ending was satisfying and felt like a good place to leave the characters. Iโ€™m glad to hear thereโ€™s more coming for Hazard and Somerset next year, but I sincerely hope the two can get some sleep and some medical aid in the meantime. Theyโ€™ve been through a hell of a wringer!

4.5 stars as part of the series; 3.5 stars on its own merits - 4 star rating overall, for me.
