Title: Cathartic read!

Review: I was pleasantly surprised at how much this book spoke to me on several levels: where I've been personally, and where I am and continue to go professionally.
I know the author--well, "know" is a strong word. I was acquainted with her decades ago. The author's high school boyfriend was my high school best friend's identical twin. My best friend died shortly after high school. I remember the author as a comforting presence to my best friend's family during what remains to this day the worst ten day period of my life (I was in no space to be a comfort to anyone). I was always grateful to her for that, and that formed the entire basis of my memory of her. I had heard the author wrote a book. I owed the author a karmic debt. I had $20 to spend, and some time to devote to reading.
I am both a person with a substance abuse history who has been clean for over 30 years, and a divorce lawyer. The stuff about Josh's detox brought back some extremely unpleasant memories of events I hope to never again experience. That said, the primary draw is that this book is more or less the book I have been looking for professionally!
I always tell clients in the early stages of the divorce experience that they urgently need something in their life at that moment that is meaningful and fulfilling, and that the divorce litigation is most assuredly NOT THAT THING!! Often times, that "thing" is the kids (to the extent that the kids do not become an extension of the fight between the dissolving couple). I think our author did a fabulous job in getting the point across that survival and sanity depend on not drowning in the toxic stew of the war.
Another thing this helped drive home (and the least favorite part of my job) is the confirmation of my observation that once the domestic violence line has been crossed, the behavior becomes something of an option for the perpetrator. I've not really seen it get better, but I have seen it get worse. I'm not saying that good outcomes aren't possible, as I obviously get them at the end of the line, but I've not seen them. That said, the impulse to believe that this behavior is an aberration on the part of the person you loved is quite common. This book does a great job of illustrating that thought process at work.
Several times I had the urge to yell at the pages ("don't walk away from 15 years of your life for pennies on the dollar"; child support keeps accruing, with interest, and is not dischargeable in bankruptcy--Josh can run, but don't let him hide!!!"; "he should have thought about being a father during the marriage"). I often see these things as boiled down to a set of facts which will form the basis of my request for a Judge to make an order. I greatly appreciate the look at the humanity behind the facts on the paper, and the emotional toll on everybody involved.
I already recommended this book to a couple of fellow practitioners when I was half way through. There is a family therapist I run into in my practice that I can't wait to tell about this book. A great read for anyone who wants to better understand how I remain employed.

Title: A Unique Voice

Review: I really enjoyed this book. Rochelle has a unique voice and perspective. She takes you on her journey. Imagine your best friend is a cute, 40-year-old, Jesus-and-Buddha loving, quirky occupational therapist wife and mother married to Mr. Perfect (a young Robert Redford, doctor, making pasta and homemade bread, playing guitar, working on cars, riding his motorcycle) living in a beautiful old house in small-town suburbia. But Mr. Perfect is not so perfect. He is an alcoholic. Rochelle tells you her story like you were at her kitchen table, making choices about what's right for her and her family, always coming from a place of love, healing, compassion, and strength of character. This book really made me think. What's the right thing to do? How do you deal with an alcoholic husband who is the father to your children? When and how do you use the legal system when those choices can affect the ability of your spouse to support the family financially? When do you let go? I might not always have made the same choices as Rochelle ("Jessica" in the book), but I wonder, were her choices BETTER than the ones I would make? She largely avoids vengeance and retribution. She keeps Mr. Perfect in her life, and home, longer than I think I would. But not out of weakness. Out of love. Is it a happy ending? I think so.

Title: Engaging, Captivating and Raw

Review: Engaging, captivating and raw are only a few of the words that describe this powerful read which is also heartbreaking at times but with touches of humor and wit woven throughout.
Rochelle is able to paint such a picture that puts you right there, grabbing your attention from the very beginning.
You can’t help but root for Jessica as she makes some tough, sometimes surprising, decisions and manages to take you on a journey to get a glimpse of the thought process behind protecting her family and her sanity.
This book has also made me think about my situation. Is it time to begin asking some difficult questions and wondering if I’m ready for the answers.
This book is truly a must read!

Title: A great story on a bad subject

The sharing of this detailed account shines a light on her spouse’s addiction and personality disorders and how she effectively handled these difficulties. This book is a must read that should give hope and direction to others living through a similar situation.

Title: This is an honest book!

Review: Rochelle writes with a refreshing rawness and doesn't pull any punches about revealing the despair one suffers when struggling with an alcoholic husband while trying to keep three children and herself afloat and stay sane. I could totally visualize her surroundings when she describes living in a small community in a beautiful home surrounded by sycamore trees and a boxwood garden.
