Title: Emotional Journey but I Had a Tough Time with Some of the Events

Review: The Journey is the story about a mid-forties man having a midlife crisis. Raiden leaves his pregnant girlfriend in Canada, thinking the grass may be greener with an ex in California. All he really discovers is the world is not a nice place. He’s taken advantage of, stolen from, and involved in other unfortunate incidents. Every person Raiden encounters is somehow important to the journey of self-discovery.

I’m really torn about this book. I really wanted to like The Journey. I really had a tough time getting past his interactions with Clea, Brianna, Roy, and Araceli. Clea, Brianna, and Araceli seem more like collateral damage in Raiden’s crisis. The pregnant girlfriend, the prostitute, and the online fling get about five seconds of fame and then we hear nothing more about them. As important as Raiden thinks they are, the women are cast aside as Raiden continues his journey from Canada and across the United States.

The pacing is great, and much of the journey kept me engaged. The world building is descriptive and informative. Raiden’s character has a lot of inner turmoil. Many his issues stem from childhood and he’s allowed them to fester into adulthood. This causes him to second guess being a father, leading him along The Journey that forces him to face who he is, where is going, and what he wants.

Content warning: There is a violent sexual assault in this novel. I typically stay away from books that contain this type of content. I know it happens and am not naïve, however, I see enough headlines about this horrific behavior when I watch/read the news. I don’t want it in my pleasure reading material.

Review: 'Impending parenthood' fiction is almost always focused on the mother, who goes through the greatest physical changes. But parenthood is a complete upheaval for the father as well, and that's what this book is focusing on. Raiden is a fantastic character and I really enjoyed watching his slow journey to realising who he really is.

Review: A truly well-written and enjoyable tale. Evocative language and great use of song cues that take the reader into the mind and emotions of an "everyman" that is relatable, even when the protagonist is showing emotional immaturity. At its core, a story of self-discovery, including the key self-discovery that all of us must make, that going someplace new will not solve our problems if we are unhappy or not self-aware, as we carry that with us no matter where we may travel. The journey of self-discovery starts within, but sometimes new environments help us open ourselves up to self-discovery.

Review: The book is interactive in a few ways, one is that I was very reactive towards the main character, constantly checking in with how i felt about him. The second, is the precise and ambient playlist that accompanies the story. And the third is that I am an armchair traveller across the US and while it's not the style I'm accustomed to, I'm learning about other perspectives. This is a cinematic page turner that will keep you thinking for some time.

The Journey is an intriguing debut that will have you engaged from start to finish. In this book we meet an emotionally troubled 40-something guy who is at a major turning point in his life. Rather than face it head on, he embarks on an epic road trip adventure across North America.

Written in the first person, this book takes us into the mind of an ordinary Joe who has hit rock bottom and must make a serious look at himself to move forward and have a better life. The book is well written, and the accompanying play list truly brings this book to life. The writing style is easy to follow and suspenseful. I found myself empathizing at times and wanting to hold the mirror up at other times. The book is an accurate portrayal of work that goes into soul searching and its importance when we find ourselves at a crossroad. This is a brilliant debut and I look forward to reading more from this author!
